DESCRIPTION

Simple SEO is SEO that's consistent and done by everyone. On sites that are managed by multiple people, it can become daunting for one person to go through and optimize each and every post. The goal of this presentation is to demostrate SEO made simple. It is a Do it Yourself SEO guide (DIYSEO) for companies that wish to emphasize a culture of SEO within their ranks.

I Pity da’ Fool Who Don’t do His or

Her Own Keyword Research• Go to http://bit.ly/brh99s

• Type in the subject of your post,

and learn a little bit about how

people search.

• (I like to change “Match Type” to

“Exact”)

• For example, I want to write an

article about eating insects.

• Look at “Global Monthly Search Volume”

• Surprise! People are more inclined to

search “Eating Bugs” than “Eating

Insects”. Though Eating Insects has a

significant amount of search volume.

Discovery

• I like to pick no more than three keywords

to target. For my post on eating insects, I’m

going to pick “Eating Bugs”, “Eat Bugs”

and “People Eating Bugs”

Edit Your Article

• Go through the article you’ve written, and insert the keyword

appropriately into places throughout the article.

For example…

In my original Article, I wrote:

“Eating insects may be considered a strange practice, but it’s

environmentally friendly, sustainable and, you might be

surprised to find, surprisingly delicious.”

After doing Keyword Research, I modified the sentence:

“While the idea of people eating bugs may be considered a

strange practice, to eat bugs is environmentally friendly,

sustainable and, you might be surprised to find, eating bugs

is surprisingly delicious.”

Titles, Descriptions, and other

nonesuch

Titles• On most sites, each article’s title should be between an

<h1>…</h1> tag. If it is between that tag, then, the title of

each post is another extremely important factor for ranking.

Usually, I name this 1) my main targeted keyword or 2) Some

variation that is user friendly.

• On a WordPress site, this title is at the very top of each “Add

New Post” Page.

• Also, make sure that the URL (labeled “Permalink:” is

keyword heavy – separate each word by a dash.)

Meta Titles• Often regarded as one of the most important ranking factors.

This title shows up in the SERPs.

• Generally, I use the words I’m targeting, beginning with the

word with the highest search volume, to the one with the least

search volume. Titles should be less than 72 characters.

o e.g. “Eating Bugs - Eat Bugs - People Eating Bugs” (43

characters).

• If you have WordPress installed, then install the plugin “All in

One SEO Pack” and insert this text into the box labeled “Title”

Descriptions• Descriptions are nominally (if at all) important in rankings. But

it is worth noting that this is the description that shows up in

the SERPs.

• Make it enticing, readable, and include a call to action!

• Insert a meta description of no more than 165 characters.

Make sure to incorporate your keywords.

o e.g. “Eating Bugs is surprisingly delicious. Want to know what it’s

like to eat bugs? Become part of a community of people eating

bugs!” (129 characters).

Keywords• The big 3 claim that they have deprecated

the Keywords meta tag. And while most

testing bares that out, principle number one

is NEVER TRUST the big 3.

• There is enough evidence that (for whatever

reason) meta keywords sometimes have an

effect, that I would still consider it best

practice to include meta keywords. (It’s such

a small amount of work…just do it)

Why Does All This Matter?

Why You NEED to Keep

Your SEO House In

Order• SEO is easy, when done bit by bit. If

you let your site go, and don’t optimize

each and every post, however, fixing it

later will take forever.

• While your in-house (or agency) SEO loves to optimize,

maintaining an internal culture emphasizing the importance

of all things search like SEO, analytics, and user experience

will mean that your SEO team will have more time to focus

on more important things like…LINKBUILDING!!!
