In this digital day and age it’s all about the tag line or the elevator speech - that rapid fire pitch that weighs up a product or service in a few words. If we had to do one for Simply Abu Dhabi, we’d say it’s ‘a global passport to pure luxury dedicated to Abu Dhabi and the UAE on and off line’. That, however, does not give the full picture.

Welcome ladies and gentleman to the royal edition of Simply Abu Dhabi magazine - the first luxury lifestyle magazine dedicated to the fame and fortune of one of the world‘s finest emerging cities, Abu Dhabi. Simply Abu Dhabi magazine is complimented by our online portal SimplyAbuDhabi.com to bring you all that is hot and current from this buzzing Middle Eastern capital. Each issue will bring you bang up to date, so you know where to be seen, what to be investing in and most importantly, who and what everyone is talking about.

Most notably this season, it’s all about the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix which will be headlined by a host of world class artists including Kanye West, Prince and Linkin Park. And for those with more go than Lewis Hamilton himself, the uber stylish Amber Lounge (the after party of choice for the likes of Jenson Button and Michael Johnson) awaits with its golden doors swung open until the early hours of the morning.

In this issue, we’ll also be bringing you an exclusive interview with Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott, an in-depth look into why every high-flying European business should be looking to hold its next event in Abu Dhabi and a review on the city’s finest bars and restaurants.

Still wondering what’s the big deal with Abu Dhabi and why not, Paris, New York or even London? Well, I challenge you friends to absorb yourself in the magic that awaits you in the following pages and then see whether that question still needs answering…

Abu Dhabi’s an ‘ice’ place to be: Ok, so at first glance A&J admittedly had reservations about how the launch of a new ice skating theatre production could hold itself as a headline event for a couple who usually spend their evenings casually swishing their way between the ultra chic Yacht Club and the Y Bar. However, with mystifying illusions and unique ice skating artistry to make even A&J put down their mocktails and get tweeting - ‘Fantasy On Ice’ sure earned its weight in gold stars.

The world premiere, which featured as part of The Summer In Abu Dhabi Festival, kicked off on 4 July at the Abu Dhabi Hall and tut tut you if you didn’t grab a ticket! With ice skaters from across the globe performing routines and moves A&J didn’t think possible - the performance was a total show-stopper!

And yes, to some degree this did require A&J to leave our ‘thespian heads’ at the door but we secretly relished the excuse to sit back and enjoy the performance like awe struck children.

A&J catch up with old pal Marc:Whilst enjoying our freshly prepared Sashimi in the warm and cosy yet ultra contemporary Sho Cho - one of Abu Dhabi’s finest Japanese lounge restaurants - we spotted our old pal Marc Jacobs. Our guess is that he’d booked himself in for Emirates Palace’s lavish one million dollar vacation package. Of course, for this great designer, only pure opulence will do.

Going Gaga for Garmoosha!:A&J got themselves down to the launch of Garmoosha - the must-have new fashion label from sparky duo, Mariam Al Mazroui and Alia Bin Drai. With splashes of vibrant, clashing colours mixed with daring tribal prints - the genius pair’s creations will be adorning the bodies of every Emiraty fashionista this autumn/winter.

Fantasy on ice Courtesy of Garmoosha Michelin Star Cantonese at Emirate’s Palace

It’s a smash hit:When an invite to the launch of Hakkasn, Emirates Palace’s new Michelin-starred Cantonese sensation, landed in our inbox , A&J knew we were on to something good. And boy, did the restaurant-come-nightclub serve up the goods!

Joined by 250 of the UAE’s social elite, the atmosphere and champagne bubbled away blissfully as guests were treated to an array of speciality dishes, including Peking duck with Royal Beluga caviar, steamed dim sum platters and grilled Wagyu beef with king soya sauce. With a hand-crafted pond complete with stepping stones and soothing incense filling the air, A&J soaked up the invigorating atmosphere as we were transported into oriental paradise.

Abu Dhabi’s most distinguished party people are at it again. A&J spill all on the city’s hot-to-trot social spots.

Sometimes we really don’t know where to be. There have been more events launching in and around Abu Dhabi over the last few months than the LA hills could handle. Although, when it came to sifting through the invites, it didn’t take much to persuade the duo to ditch Abu Dhabi’s annual Chess Festival in favour of letting loose in Emirate Palace‘s swanky new oriental hide out.

Working in partnership with an extensive network of luxury suppliers, Quintessentially Abu Dhabi will give you the virtual keys to any city, with an irresistible package of offers, benefits and privileges that will save you both time and money.

So, ‘what does Quintessentially really provide me with?’ you ask. Well, pretty much everything is the short answer. Need a local restaurant recommendation or last minute VIP tickets to the best events in the world? A to Z bespoke travel arrangements or that limited edition item that you’ve been longing after for ages? Just name it and we’ll sort it.

As vibrant as the city of Abu Dhabi is, it seems that Quintessentially’s members are looking for that special something to make time spent more exclusive, more unique, more memorable. From my many requests with Quintessentially over the years, here are my favorite examples of some requests fulfilled by Quintessentially’s Office in Abu Dhabi:

• Very last minute provisions and concierge services (including meeting, chaperoning and car pick-up) for high-profile celebrities who performed during the 2010 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

• Same day request for the following three presents to be found abroad; a love bracelet from Cartier, a white cymbidium flower bouquet and a birthday cake. All three items were quickly secured and delivered at midnight as per requirements.

• My favorite request: A friend of mine who happens to be an Elite member at Quintessentially Abu Dhabi, requested luxurious travel arrangements to be organised for nine of us, at his costs thankfully. Spanning thirteen destinations across Europe, the team set about sorting those private jet bookings, extravagant car rentals, logistic coordination, luggage handling and delivery and - best of all - creation of a customised Arabic/English city guide, with all the insider info necessary to escort him to the crème de la crème of the best this world has to offer.

• Just after the iPhone 4 was launched in Europe, Quintessentially was able to secure two of them within 48 hours for one deliriously happy member and no they were not then resold for a substantial profit on Ebay .

I asked Quintessntially to arrange a whole day for me and one of Simply Abu Dhabi’s most prestigious advertisers and this is what they come up with:

07:00: Started our day early with a walk along the corniche side heading towards the Emirates Palace for an unforgettable breakfast served on a silver tray. Fantastic tour in the palace where you can see the 60 metre high central atrium and the 1002 Swarovski Crystal chandeliers. Then dropped by the permanent display of visionary plans for Abu Dhabi cultural centre.

10:00: Booked us in for a guided tour around the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque - the third biggest mosque in the world - where you can see the world’s largest carpet, the world’s largest light fitting and a massive 24 carat gold-plated chandelier.

12:30: Time for lunch... Just choose the type of cuisine you like and enjoy a gastronomical experience in any of the top dining restaurants in the city. We were booked in Hakkasan.

14:00: Dropped by the Cultural Foundation. A permanent photography exhibition reveals the metamorphosis of Abu Dhabi from fishers’ and pearlers’ village into a mini-metropolis.Don’t forget to savour the cardamom & saffron Arabic coffee served in the coffee shop.

16:00: Went for a desert Safari… One of the best must-do experiences in Abu Dhabi: Dune drive, camel trekking, sunset barbecue before relaxing beneath the stars in a charming rustic Bedouin camp.

23:00: Relished the purely refined atmosphere of the outdoor Cedar Lounge in Fairmont Bab AL Bahr. Relaxed and enjoyed my shisha as the DJ spuns some truly uplifting tracks.

01:30: Our after party? Allure in Cipriani Yas Yacht Club was the perfect place to be. In this stunning Penthouse night club you will be offered an ultimate entertainment experience till the early morn.

Amazing day, and we got the result we wanted so thank you Quintessentially from all of us at Simply Abu Dhabi.

Page 13: Simply Abu Dhabi The First Edition

This marks an astonishing development from just a few years ago when Dubai stood as the only serious contender in bringing large scale organisations over to the Middle East. But now, thanks to the investment of a few billion dirham, Abu Dhabi is a major player in a global industry worth £34 billion a year.

Amongst those corporate venues taking Abu Dhabi into the business headlines, is the recently launched Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) and its first-rate meeting and conference facilities recently scooped two world class awards. The ADNEC is a beacon for the Middle East in providing world class conference facilities and last year the venue hosted 119 events. It’s IDEX show is one of the world’s largest defence exhibitions and more than 900 exhibitors from across the world have signed up to participate in the tenth anniversary show to be held in February next year.

Simon Horgan, ADNEC Group CEO, commented: “Abu Dhabi has emerged as a major global destination for live events. In 2005, 14 exhibitions were held at the old exhibition facilities in the UAE capital but in the last five years, we’ve seen an astonishing near nine-fold rise. The Abu Dhabi government has played a vital role in nurturing the emirate’s potential for events, following a multi-pronged development approach that encompasses sectors such as tourism, hotels, transport and communications.”

The city is also celebrating the launch of Ferrari World, which after opening in October this year, is the latest addition to Abu Dhabi’s impressive portfolio of highly sophisticated MICE venues.

Billed as the world’s biggest theme park, Ferrari World fulfils the need for a quirky and entertaining MICE venue in the UAE. In addition to its eight function rooms, individual attractions can be booked for corporate events or large parties of 50 and 1,500 guests. The outdoor venue is also available for large scale performance-based events and has already pulled in a multitude of famous faces including, Beyoncé, Jamiroquai, Linkin Park, Prince and Kanye West.

Troy Lindquist, director of sales and marketing at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, commented:

“As Abu Dhabi’s population grows to three million, the Abu Dhabi government is embarking on an ambitious plan to turn the emirate in to a thriving place to live, work and visit. As part of this plan, we’re seeing the development of a lot of fantastic infrastructure facilities which cater to the needs of the local and international business community.”

But more long-standing developments, such as Emirates Palace, are also continuing to invest in the development of their conference facilities and the luxury hotel boasts 40 meeting rooms, an auditorium with a 1,000 person capacity and a sumptuous ballroom able to hold 2,400 guests.

With Abu Dhabi’s economy booming, the emirate is on a steadfast mission of industrial diversification. The capital is brimming with prospect and opportunity and most significantly, wealth, forcing the corporate world to sit up and take note.

As a part of this expansion strategy, the city has firmly established itself as an emerging meeting, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) hub and is fast becoming one of the most attractive places in the Middle East to do business.

The significant investment being poured into Abu Dhabi’s conference and events facilities is attracting international organisations to the emerging city to host a myriad of events. Thousands of delegates representing industries from fashion to high finance flock to the city each year, with business visitors now accounting for 80 per cent of Abu Dhabi’s tourism market. Rupert Murdoch, the media tycoon, Tony Blair and numerous top-tier global media players are amongst those who are part of the conference and exhibition scene in the UAE capital.

Page 14: Simply Abu Dhabi The First Edition

The newly-opened futuristic Yas Hotel, which overlooks the Yas Marina Circuit - the scene of last year’s inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - is also attracting the attention of conference organisers.

The luxury hotel offers 1,700 square metres of conference and events space, including an impressive 500 square metre ballroom and spectacular rooftop pool deck. And with VIP services available such as ‘Car Spa’ detailing service and valet, limousine rental, personal concierge and a dedicated floral designer - the Yas Hotel allows organisations to really put on a show-stopping event.

As well as investing heavily in venue development, Abu Dhabi’s expanding airline network is opening up huge opportunity. Abu Dhabi International Airport is now directly linked with 69 destinations, served by 32 airlines, with Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, consistently expanding capacity. Passenger traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport has grown significantly over the past five years and the airport now handles over nine million passengers a year.

“Over the past five years we have ridden a wave of economic prosperity complemented by sound strategy which has substantially raised our international profile,” said Lawrence Franklin, the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority’s strategy & policy director.

There is no question that Abu Dhabi has firmly placed itself as a landmark on the corporate world map. It’s all eyes on the middle eastern capital as a seemingly endless amount of money is pumped back into its economy at a time when the majority of the world is going through a very deep slump.

However, Abu Dhabi is not the only destination to be fighting strong. Other emerging destinations are also pouring money into the sector in direct competition with Abu Dhabi for a share of the convention market.

“There is strong growth in the hosting of major global conventions in destinations such as Cape Town, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei and Seoul,” Mr. Talwar said.

With only 80 made to celebrate Pininfarina’s 80th anniversary, the Ferrari SA APERTA is a very rare creature gracing the world’s roads. Recently launched at the Paris Motor Show 2010, the 599-based roadster features the V12 from the GTO and a ‘light soft-top’. Thanks to the 670 CV engine beneath its bonnet, the SA APERTA hits 62mph in a scarcely believable 3.35 seconds! And when it comes to looks - the SA APERTA has Cindy Crawford’s beauty in it’s DNA.

The California is one of Ferrari’s most popular models and it’s not hard to see why. The hard top convertible boasts a V8 engine; 7-speed gearbox with steering wheel-mounted F1-style paddles; a new dual clutch; a new suspension system (double wishbones at the front and multilink at the rear); F1-Trac traction control system; and Brembo brakes with CCM (carbon ceramic material) discs. Plus, the Carrozzeria Scaglietti Programme allows all Ferrari clients to personalise their car to suit their own tastes and requirements. It may be a couple of years’ old but The California really is everything you could possibly want from a roadster (perhaps, minus an in-car personal back masseur) and has sure earnt its right to carry the Ferrari badge with pride.

Sincere, softly-spoken and grounded are perhaps not three terms most people would use to describe a Premiership footballer. But Joleon Lescott certainly breaks the mould. Wherever your football loyalties lie, it is hard not to be drawn by Joleon‘s warmth; the golden-footed star simply oozes likeability.

Who/what first got you hooked on football? My older brother Aaron was my inspiration for getting into football. You always look up to your older brother and going to watch him play football as a child triggered my passion for the game from a very young age. He knows I look up to him - I’m very proud of what he’s achieved.

What would you say are the pros and cons of a career as a professional footballer?I count myself very lucky to be doing something I love for a job. The opportunity to get to play every week in front of thousands of people is the ultimate experience for me. I would honestly play for nothing. No professional sports players I know have got into football because they want to drive fast cars; it’s because they just love to play the game.

It does have its downsides though as you do have to be very committed and miss out on family occasions. I try and make up for this in other ways by creating opportunities for my friends and family.

How do you mentally prepare yourself before a game?I used to be really superstitious before I went on to the pitch as I had a lot of tense energy when I was younger. I used to put my socks on a certain way, tie my boots a particular way and always eat the same thing the day before a game. I’ve dropped these habits now as I’m more relaxed and confident in my ability.

If you hadn’t gone into professional football, where do you think you’d be now for a career? If I hadn’t gone into football I’d have probably followed my dad and gone into DJ-ing. Music is one of my other biggest passions outside of football and I really idolise the producer Ryan Leslie.

Can you remember the moment you first found out that City was being taken on by Sheikh Mansour? I remember thinking ‘wow’ when I heard that Sheikh Mansour was taking over City. I knew that his wealth would mean he’d be bringing the best players from around the world into the Premiership and that we’d get a chance to play against the best in the game. People may be surprised to hear that I was excited about the news, when I was playing for a competitor team at the time, but the thought of having world class players in our league was incredibly exciting.

Do you think Sheikh Mansour’s takeover will mark the start of City’s rise to replace Chelsea and Manchester United at the top of the Premiership? People are now taking us seriously. I really believe that we can go on and achieve some great things and we certainly have the potential to win the league this year. We want to do it for the fans. They’ve been with us through the hard times and now it’s time to really bring up the goods.

What makes you happy? My family and friends. I’m very content with my life at the minute. Life is easy when you have a good network of friends and a supportive family. I’m very lucky in that way.

What sort of husband are you? One word: messy! I’m not much of a romantic but I’m starting to learn that side of a relationship. The stability I have in my life is very much down to Debbie.

What are your ambitions for the future (both your football career and personal life)? To achieve with City and England. Even if we do win the league this year, we’d be just as keen to push on and improve even more the year after.

In terms of my family life, there may be more kids for us in the future but at the moment we’re very happy the four of us. My oldest loves to get out in the garden and play football with me. Everyday it’s not raining we have to go out and play - in fact, I’m quite glad it’s raining today! I also love watching cartoons with Donovan and Clayton - I’m such a big kid with them!

On Abu Dhabi…I’ve never had the chance yet to go to Abu Dhabi as I’ve always been playing or training for England when the boys have gone over but I’ve heard it’s an amazing place. I think we’re going to go on a family holiday there next year. It’s less touristy than Dubai and it’s the perfect destination for downtime.

Abu Dhabi has an amazing portfolio of hotels but we’re quite easily pleased as a family. As long as there’s plenty for the kids to do and an English TV channel they can watch then we’re happy!

Despite being one of Eastlands’ highest value transfers of recent years, the father of two is refreshingly down to earth, a genuine family man and is incredibly passionate about his craft - claiming he would “honestly play for nothing”.

“I’m so passionate about football and the Premier League - I’m not just a football player, I still feel like I’m a fan.”

Perhaps this surprisingly grounded mindset is due in part to Joleon’s upbringing and some humbling life experiences. He recalls the severe car accident which nearly took his life aged five and bares a permanent reminder on his forehead today: “I count myself very lucky as it was a very serious accident.”

“I was judged and teased at school because of the scars from the accident but it taught me to not to be in that bracket where people judge each other based on their faults. As much as it hurt at the time, I learned to focus on the ways in which I am blessed.”

And the self-acclaimed “mummy’s boy” certainly did just that. After writing a letter to Derby County when he was 15, Joleon was snapped up by the team fresh out of secondary school. “There was no real question of going to do a ‘9 to 5’ - it just wasn’t for me. As far as I was concerned, football was the only option.”

Unlike most transfers, which are usually a decision kept under tight wraps by the suited and booted, it was Joleon’s mum who oversaw the first transfer agreement of his glistening football career and the passionate youngster soon moved to his home team Wolverhampton Wanderers FC so that he could be closer to his family.

After several seasons playing for Everton, the defender had really made a name for himself and following a phenomenal injection of money into Manchester City by Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour, the rising Blues signed him up for £22 million. “I count myself so lucky for being one of Manchester City’s ‘chosen ones’.”

But despite his successes, Joleon is certainly no Premiership playboy. His fiancé Debbie has remained his front-line support from the very start - well before the former Wolves player had experienced even a whiff of the shimmering life of a professional footballer.

The couple plan to marry next June and Debbie is revelling in the opportunity to create the big OK! magazine wedding.

“There will be a few of the Everton and Wolves lot there as well as current team mates. Although I don’t think we’ll be inviting Mancini as having him there watching us get drunk wouldn’t be fair on the boys!”

Joleon may do very well at putting himself across as an ‘every day lad’ but he certainly doesn’t look like your average 30-something Brummie. The towering sportsman is effortlessly stylish and you only need catch a glimmer of his uber chic Audemars Piguetwatch to appreciate that Joleon has got fashion nous. And with a knock out fiancé, two indisputably gorgeous children, a stunning family home and as a first team player of arguably the fastest growing club in the Premiership; Joleon Lescott certainly has it all.

The golden perfume shopping rule: There’s a certain checklist of purchases that every serious shopper must tick before leaving the city: a timeless watch, designer handbag, statement diamond or gold piece of bling and, of course, a few bottles of authentic Arabic perfume. The delicate golden handcrafted fragrance bottles are simply irresistible and will hold pride of place on your dressing room table. Plus, a pretty little bottle of perfume makes an impressive gift to take home for friends and family, so they too can sample an ‘essence’ of the sand lands.

But before you get too carried away stocking up on your scents, there is one very important rule to remember when it comes to buying perfume in Abu Dhabi. Don’t be tricked into thinking that the souks (markets) always stock the most authentic perfumes. People commonly make the assumption that the market holders’ scented bottles are freshly handmade in a local’s front room but, unfortunately, you don’t always know what you’re buying or where it has come from. To be on the safe side, stick to the proper perfumery stores and malls. Otherwise you could quite easily be walking away with a concoction that isn’t too far away from sink water! Failing all else, just follow your nose.

How it’s made:The original Arabian scent came from burning Oudh, a woody substance extracted from Auilaria and Gyrinops trees in the jungles of south-east Asia. Oudh is created when a fungal parasite infects the tree to produce an oily resin, which is then collected. Pure Oudh is much better than the distilled, less concentrated form, Dehn Oudh, and is definitely worth the higher price tag.

Making ‘sense’ out of choosing the right ‘scent’:Unlike the floral French perfumes we’re used to, Arabic scents tend to all have a wood or musk undertone. But you’re certainly not limited on choice as there are hundreds of different variations with their own distinctive fragrances. Plus, many shops also allow you to mix up your own scent to compliment your individual taste. Personalised perfumes? Now we’re talking!

There are essentially two types of perfume, Oudh and Bukhoor. Oudh has an earthy, woody tone and can be used by both men and women. Pure Oudh is burned so that its scent emanates into the air and penetrates your clothes.

Bukhoor is a mixture of various different scents and usually looks like round pieces of coal about the size of your thumb. This sort of scent is used to burn in living spaces and is a must-have memento for bringing a bit of Middle Eastern luxury back to your home.

Look out for Dehen Oud’s limited edition, Dehen Aload, which is one of the most distinguished fragrances currently on the market and is priced around £400.

For service and quality you can trust, head to the Middle East’s premier fragrance house, Ajmal Perfumes, which has a boutique in the Baniyas district of Abu Dhabi. As a guideline, any bottles priced anything upwards of AED 600 (around £100) tend to provide a good, full-on, rich fragrance.

Harry Winston Opus X An abstract expression of timeIn the collaborative tradition of Opus, Harry Winston and genius watch engineer Jean-François Mojon bring you the impeccably chic Harry Winston Opus X.

The Opus X captures the shape and dimensionality of time through a synchronised rotation of circular motions which mimics the orbit of the solar system. Replacing a traditional fixed dial and watch hands, time is displayed as a system of rotating indicators mounted on a revolving frame. The timepiece presents a new technical innovation; as the frame completes a full rotation, the dials of each indicator turn in the opposite direction, ensuring orientation remains constant in any position. The ultra modern 46mm white gold case is designed without a bezel, providing added light and transparency. A ground-breaking piece that defines the very essence of the Opus series.

It’s well known that one of the first things a woman judges a man on is his shoes and choice in jewellery. And it’s only a ‘matter of time’ before she loses interest if either of these things are not up to scratch. A fancy piece of wrist bling never goes unnoticed in the business world either. It’s this kind of attention to detail that demands a businessman be taken seriously; it says I’m successful, slick and unwaveringly efficient. As businesses across the globe look to get back onto their feet and reclaim their slice of success, ensuring that brand representatives give off the right impression is a must.

But how to know you’re making the right investment to fit you and your lifestyle? Simply Abu Dhabi‘s lifestyle editor, Jordana, picks out this season’s finest men’s designer watches. It’s time to make a statement!

The Handset

Looks like every 21st century city slicker in the UAE and UK together with all gadget and gizmo lovers have been waiting eagerly for this bright little spark from Blackberry – Research In Motion has catapulted itself forward in the war of touch screen technology with the launch of its latest smart phone, the new Blackberry Torch.

The BlackBerry Torch is a solid, weighty and promisingly robust device with a beautifully designed 3.2-inch touch screen dominating the front fascia – underneath this is the all so recognisable optical track pad accompanied by four horizontally placed touch buttons. The side panels consist of three embedded shortcut buttons on the right, a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top right and a micro USB port on the left. There aren’t any multimedia keys on top of the device, but a thin subtly placed metal strip does include controls to enable silent mode and to lock the screen from accidental calls or messages.

Aesthetically the device’s casing is completed by a shiny metallic composite, almost Darth Vader like, as previously seen on the BlackBerry Curve 3G, and to seal the product, there is rubberised back battery casing. It’s probably worth mentioning that the SD memory card slot resides underneath this back cover, therefore no requirement to remove the battery to change cards.

The slide mechanism opens and closes via an up and down motion with an almost satisfyingly smooth and naturally flowing motion to showcase the elegant QWERTY keypad beneath, consisting of a full set of easy to use and recognisable buttons. The keys are lightly raised inwards to assist usability making it comfortable to type out those ever so important messages to your friends and family. Like it’s nemesis there is an an onscreen virtual keyboard and dialler.

Operating System

The real X-Factor about the Storm, is that it gives Blackberry the opportunity to show off their latest operating system aka Blackberry 6, presenting the ever so demanding consumer with a genius touch screen interface.

The technological evolutionary process has definitely kicked in and you can instantly see the transformation from boy to man, as the home screen boasts five different menus, all accessible and scrollable by finger tip motion movement from left to right. Hmmm, similar to their iPhone world dominating nemesis? Who cares it works and works with style!!!! Chose from Favourites, Downloads, Media, Frequent or simply All. You can even customize the visual display of each menu to your liking.

Each individual menu houses a number of sub categories that can be moved around and tailored according to your choice – tap and hold an icon to launch a mini-menu giving the option to mark as favourite; move; move to folder; hide; launch; delete; help or switch app. It’s a fully detailed system that’s user friendly, well-delivered and permits a great level of personalisation.

The top menu bars are equally interactive. You can press anywhere along the top row (battery level; time; signal bar) to open a key settings menu, providing the opportunity to change wifi, blue tooth and internet connections and set alarms. The bar immediately beneath it illustrates the current profile in addition to any call, text or email notifications, if you press on the alerts a drop-down menu appears permitting you to view missed calls and messages in depth.I’d like to think of the next feature as the Torch’s very own little internal search engine.

The bar also has a universal search feature displayed in avatar of a magnifying glass. A tap of this little icon prompts search field enabling you to look through the entire contents of this very smart phone! The results of a search appear in a box below the search field and if you are using the keypad the search is automatically activated when you commence typing. There are also options to search YouTube, Google and Blackberry App World.

My personal verdict is if you want a smart phone, then it has to be Blackberry Torch, well that is until they bring

out their next supermodel.

BlackBerry OS 6: Key Features

Internet & MediaThe Internet browser has definitely gone under the knife and experienced a complete facelift from its Blackberry predecessors, allowing for a superior quality of user experience for surfing the internet waves. Internet sites and web pages seem to respond very quickly and load without causing frustration. There’s also another very familiar element, the pinch to zoom feature that concentrates in on a designated area of the web page or image at hand. You can also swipe the screen to drag pages around and a double tap to enable instant zoom. It’s my favourite addition and improvement to Blackberry so far.

It’s quite easy to change pages using different windows as the browser now supports multiple tabs. Rotating the handset accordingly will also allow you to view in both landscape and portrait modes. Tucked away in the media tab there is an array of delightful entertainment applications which include a video player, a mp3 player, and a voice recorder which is brilliant for sending messages via BBM. One of the most satisfying new features is the ability to search music by scrolling through album art.

You can also connect to you personal portfolio of music over Wi-Fi Blackberry Media Sync. The video player plays in landscape only, however plays back movies in widescreen with buttons at the foot of the screen

The Torch ticks all the right boxes in terms of connectivity, starting with 2G and 3G quad-band support. There is both HSPA for high-speed downloads and uploads, with class 10 EDGE and GPRS as back-ups. You can connect to a local Wi-Fi network or hook up with another Bluetooth device, or listen wirelessly in stereo thanks to A2DP. If all else fails a micro USB port allows users to connect to a PC the old-fashioned way via cable.

CameraThe device includes a really nice five-megapixel camera, featuring continuous autofocus, image stabilisation and LED flash, with a control system that makes good use of the touch screen interface. Operating in landscape mode, a row of touch icons appears beneath the onscreen viewfinder, with a central blue button behaving as the shutter – you can tap this to take a photo or press a physical button on the top of the device if you prefer. On either side of the shutter button are controls to instantly turn the flash on or off, activate GPS for geo-tagging, choose a scene mode or access the picture gallery. There are more advanced settings that are available within the menu. For all you budding Speilbergs out there, you can also record widescreen video in VGA format (640×480 pixels).

Social Feeds & AppsTo satisfy the increasing demand for mobile social networking, RIM has attached a new Social Feeds app that is out of this world and so easy to use. This allows all social network junkies to access a virtual one-stop shop, pulling in feeds from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, BlackBerry Messenger and MySpace amongst others. It’s a fantastic solution that can be bespoke to your liking – you can see all the items in a single stream or filter it so they are isolated and grouped in separate lists that can be scrolled from side to side.

As expected from Blackberry, mini versions of business related apps such as Word, Excel and Power point are also included, making life on the go even more convenient.

If I was to compare the Blackberry torch to a car, it would have to be a Rolls Royce Ghost, its everything you want from a product, class, style, sophistication and power. Its responds well and there is a fluidity of genius and professionalism throughout the device. Unlike its competitors it has the ability to sustain modern day technology yet it combines it with a hint of tradition. This shines through with its dual keyboard functionality both touch screen and physical, making it a joy for the user.

During the time I was writing this appraisal for TRON: Legacy, I couldn’t but help recall two specific memories. The original TRON was the first recollection that came to mind, together with Star Wars, which I can proudly say were my first real sci-fi experiences at the big screen.

Sure, the plot wasn’t as wholesome as one would like, there was definitely a big void in character evolution which didn’t really exist back in those days or daze I should say. However, I can hand on my heart say without prejudice, that the original Tron for it’s time, was truly a technological breakthrough in special effects. The world that the cinema audiences saw were delivered in revolutionary presentation; it captivated the attention of millions and you can see why the studios decided to revive the Tron brand.

T RO N : L e g a c ythe re v i e w

The other element that I am reminded of, or perhaps a little sceptical about, is the incredible visual pressure my eyes felt last time I saw a sci-fi movie in 3D, in fact it was this time last year, I felt my eyes had taken two upper cut combos from Mike Tyson, after watching Avatar in 3d. However, I think it’s me being old school and preferring 3d as a luxury rather than a necessity: TRON: Legacy is a movie with stunning, stylish and sophisticated special effects, great action, and a script that could have done with that little bit more.

Sam Flynn (Hedlund), a rebellious 27-year-old, is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father Kevin Flynn (Bridges), a man once known as the world’s leading video-game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal sent from the old Flynn’s Arcade -- a signal that could only come from his father-- he finds himself pulled into a digital world where Kevin has been trapped for 20 years. With the help of the fearless warrior Quorra (Wilde), father and son embark on a life-or-death journey across a cyber universe -- a universe created by Kevin himself that has become far more advanced with vehicles, weapons, landscapes and a ruthless villain who will stop at nothing to prevent their escape.

There is no real point in me waffling on about the effects because they simply are spectacular. Once the 3D effects kick into play, you are absorbed into this weirdly wonderful digital world and believe me, you don’t want to leave. .Daft Punk and Joseph Trapanese’s sound track beautifully compliment these awesome visuals that get your adrenalin overflowing and the blood racing through your veins, the music only reinforces the impact of every scene in this movie.

Jeff Bridges has a magnificent aura about him as both the villain and hero and his computer animated visual is truly remarkable. He exudes a larger than life presence throughout the movie, and he is at times fatherly, menacing, and graceful. The acting overall is not anything to write home about, I don’t believe there will be any Oscars nominations for the acting in this flick. However, the real star of the film is Garrett Hedlund, who does a pretty decent job of carrying the film and being generally astonished, that not only was his father alive but the extraordinary world he always talked about actually existed.

He is a believable movie hero in the stock tradition of 20-somethings who have a chip on their shoulder to only have that chip brushed off by the end. Garrett definitely holds his own against a very charismatic Jeff Bridges.

Olivia Wilde kicks butt and looks gorgeous doing it, in her skin tight cat suit with neon highlights and her asymmetrical wig as the warrior, Quorra. She seems to be having a lot more fun with this role than she does with that of Thirteen on ‘House’. Quorra has a slight naivety about her in regards to some things, and displays a sense of childlike wonder from time to time occasion, especially at the end, which actually gives her some depth. Wilde and Hedlund share some good scenes together, and her character at least gets some development - which is a lot more than I can say for the albino-like “Siren”, Gem (Beau Garrett).

Joseph Kosinski who makes his directorial debut, uses his architectural skill and knowledge to excellent effect in eclipsing the action. He has directed an adventure yarn that is woven with spiritual allegories, allowing one to be entertained, moved, and also stimulated.

It seems like the filmmakers hit a dead end and found themselves check mated prematurely, by trying to make up for problems with the original and at the same time trying to pay respect to it, but the result is a story that could have been so much better than it is. Like everything in life, nothing is perfect and some things far from it. but with Tron, there is still enough in the story to enjoy and the effects make for an entertaining film. If you’re a geek or a fan of the first TRON, you will like this Legacy. If you’re a regular moviegoer or weren’t that keen on the original, you’ll still find something to like in this movie. As a sequel it is above and beyond its predecessor. Enjoy!

A new biopic brings full on action as savvy American assassin Jack — played by George Clooney — is drawn away from a life on the edge, when confronted with romance and gospel. But is it too late for the spoof photographer to get out from this picture of hell?

The American is an exercise in impressive style but falls short in emotional pull. An atmospheric arty-thriller that’s more of an aesthetic experience than an emotional one.

Introducing lead actor George Clooney who plays the role of a top-of-the-line professional assassin named Jack. The American shows an alternative Clooney to that we are used to. He comes across somewhat removed from the screen and presents a much more internal performance than usual as he takes on the character of high-alert hit man Jack.

T H E A M E R I C A NF I L M O F T H E M O N T H

A good deal of the movie, directed by Anton Corbijn from a script by Rowan Joffe, is devoted to the patient examination of Jack at work. He applies his trade with meticulous care; weighing, measuring, disassembling and tweaking his special gun with artisanal devotion. While this exceptionally high level of craft is satisfying, it can involve us for only so long and the plot does lack an ability to be emotionally invigorating. Given these structural drawbacks, Clooney performs fairly well and is convincing as a suave craftsman who dislikes wasting either words or bullets.

As Jack (or Butterfly as he also known because of the tattoo between his shoulder blades) retreats to Italy, two unexpected meetings arise with local priest, Father Benedetto, and prostitute, Clara. And it is at this point that the movie heightens as we witness the killing machine’s heart put to the test.

The cinematography holds this movie together. The creatively alluring screen shots certainly pack a punch and are impeccably composed frame-by-frame for full-on, high wattage action. Eagle-eye views of red-tile roofs; glimpses down narrow stone passageways; raunchy sex scenes; and shots of Clooney in action — The American is visually spectacular.

Release date: 26 November 2010 (UK)UAE release date yet to be announced.

Etoiles - Emirates Palace

This hotel certainly lives up to its name and its many bars and restaurants will transport you and your taste buds around the world as part of a mesmerising culinary journey. Even the most discerning foodies can’t help but be encapsulated by the edible treasures that Emirates Palace holds. Of the Palace’s wonders, our favourite pick is Etoiles and that’s certainly not just because this modern brasserie-come-lounge club was the location for Paris Hilton‘s hit TV show: My New BBF.

Etoiles redefines fine dining with an impressive culinary line up served before a back drop of opulent décor and streams of shimmering chandeliers running the length of the venue. The award-winning restaurant is like a who’s who of Abu Dhabi’s elite and visiting celebrities who are drawn by its menu of fine avant-garde European cuisine. Once your stomachs are pleasantly satisfied, you can kick back with a cocktail and some smooth grooves, whilst taking in the view of the Arabian Sea’s beautiful moonlit waters. Hello paradise.

Sho Cho - Shangri-La Hotel

It’s not this Japanese restaurant’s food that sets it apart but its stunning outdoor decking area dressed with white leather seating that looks out to a setting of yachts bobbing along the horizon of the Gulf ’s waters.

With its trendy furnishings and splashes of neon colour, Sho Cho has a distinctively intergalactic feel that will transport you into a very pleasant mindset for the evening. The bar’s resident DJ plays out a selection of chill-out and 80s tunes, making it the number one choice for those looking for an effortlessly romantic hot spot.

The food however, isn’t quite as impressive. On first looking, Scho Ho’s little bundles of sushi are beautiful works of art but they do slightly lack lustre on taste. To avoid disappointment, we recommend heading to Sho Cho at sunset for an early evening cocktail and to soak up the postcard terrace view.

All food outlets are regularly checked for hygiene by Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority. Non-Muslims can consume pork in certain outlets – any dishes using pork ingredients will be prepared separately from non-pork dishes and clearly marked on the menu.

Many fine dining and high end restaurants may add a service charge (usually around 10%) and a tourism levy of 6% (in hotel restaurants only) to your bill. These charges are often included in the menu prices and the menu will denote when they are. You may choose to reward your waiter directly with a tip – the usual is 10%.
