region’s largest park and has become one of South Dakota's top outdoor recreationdestinations. Reserve modern, semi-modern and equestrian campsites in most state parks and recreation areas. Campsites are reservable fromlate May through Labor Day. Big Sioux, Lewis & Clark, Newton Hills and Palisades also accept autumn reservations through early October. At other times of the year, campsitesare available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can also reserve picnic shelters and camping cabins year round. Reservations can be made up to 90 days in advance.Reservations are accepted as few as two days prior to arrival when using a credit card, or 10 days for other payment methods. Lewis & Clark has designated same-day reserva-tion campsites.

Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve: At Adams Nature Preserve, you can see one of the last free-
flowing segments of the Missouri River. Miles of hiking and bikingtrails crisscross the preserve. Located near Nor th Sioux City.
Site of First Election West of the Mississippi:Following the death of Sgt. Floyd, Captains Meriwether Lewis and
William Clark needed a sergeant to replace him. A vote was heldAugust 22, 1804. Patrick Gass received 19 votes in what is believedto be the first election by U.S. citizens west of the Mississippi. Thiselection was held where the town of Elk Point now stands.
Spirit Mound: Local tribes believed that 18-inch devils, armed with arrows,
inhabited this prairie hill. The story sparked Lewis and Clark’sinterest, and on Aug. 25, 1804, they set off on foot to investigate.The men hiked for 4 hours, but at the top, the infamous devils werenowhere to be found. However, the explorers did see an incrediblesight: a herd of buffalo, nearly 800 of them, grazed in the distance.Spirit Mound Historic Prairie is located 6 miles nor th of Vermillion onHwy. 19. It features a 3/4 mile hiking trail to summit with interpre-tive signage and 300 acres of prairie currently restored to originalgrasses and wildflowers.
Lewis and Clark Visitor Center:On Aug. 30, 1804 the expedition held its first council with the
Yankton Sioux. The explorers presented the Yanktons with gifts oftobacco, flags and medals. The Yanktons prepared a feast. The
Lewis and Clark Visitor Center is a great place to learn more aboutthe expedition, the tribes they encountered and the river itself. Builton a bluff overlooking Lewis and Clark Lake and the Gavins PointDam, the center offers incredible photo oppor tunities. Located onHwy. 52 west of Yankton. To reach the Visitor Center, take the bridgeacross Gavins Point Dam.
Running Water: On Sept. 2, 1806, on their return trip, Lewis and Clark met up
with a group of Yankton Sioux and after realizing they were friends,smoked several pipes and exchanged news. Standing Bear Bridgenow spans the Missouri connecting South Dakota and Nebraska nearthat site. A scenic lookout offers a breathtaking view of the river.

Handicap accessible trails are located at Beaver Creek Nature Area and Big Sioux,Lewis & Clark and Pierson Ranch Recreation Areas. These state parks offer equestrian trails as well as camping facilities designed for horses
and their riders: Lewis & Clark Recreation Area, Newton Hills State Park and Union GroveState Park. Big Sioux Recreation Area and Clay County Park also provides horse trails.South Dakota’s newest state park, Good Ear th State Park at Blood Run, is located just
east of Sioux Falls. This National Historic Landmark is the location of a large NativeAmerican sacred site. It features 2 miles of hiking trails through Bur Oak Forest, native tallgrass prairie and winds along the banks of the Big Sioux River.Newton Hills Woodland Trail, near Canton, is on the National Recreational Trails registry.
Crossing dense forests and open grasslands, it is an exceptional trail for birdwatchers. Anobservation tower provides a bird’s eye view of a wooded valley. To see a century old homestead, visit the Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve near
Nor th Sioux City. You'll find 8 miles of trails along the Missouri River, with wildlife viewingblinds along the trail and an oppor tunity to explore the home, barns, church and schoolhouse. Four trails twist and turn through quar tzite formations along Split Rock Creek atPalisades State Park, near Garretson. Sights along the trail include a historicbridge designated as a National Historic Structure. A challenging climb on toweringSioux quar tzite spires and sheer cliff walls await the more adventurous outdoors-man. Devil’s Gulch also provides scenic trails to Devil’s Falls and Devil’s Stairwayamidst legends of outlaw Jesse James.Union Grove State Park, near Beresford, features a 4 mile multi-use trail and a
large variety of trees which provide fall color and habitat for birds and wildlife. Big Sioux Recreation Area lies on the banks of the Big Sioux River. Five miles of
trails ramble through woodland and prairie. A bicycle trail connects with the nearbytown of Brandon. In winter, snowshoers and snowmobilers can hit the trails andrelax afterwards at the warming house. Nearby Beaver Creek Nature Area is agood place to observe wildlife. An 1870's cabin is the centerpiece for living historyprograms. Big Sioux Recreation Area also features an 1869 homestead cabin.Stand where Lewis and Clark stood 200 years ago. Take the three-quar ter mile
trail to the summit of Spirit Mound, near Vermillion, where over 300 acres of prairiehas been restored. Interpretive signage makes this hike a learning experience.Lewis and Clark Recreation Area, Yankton, has miles of trails including paved lake-
side trails and rugged mountain bike trails. The system of trails also connects tonearby Yankton. The newly opened double decker Meridian Bridge Trail in Yanktonoffers hikers and bikers great views of the Missouri River.Hundred of miles of snowmobile trails connecting Garretson, Dell Rapids,

Big Sioux RiverOriginating in nor theastern South Dakota, the Big Sioux River winds southward to
Sioux Falls, where it forms the boundary between South Dakota and Iowa until it meets the Missouri River. With good water levels in the spring and early summer, it is possible topaddle from US Hwy 14 near Brookings to the river’s confluence with the Missouri River. Paddlers favor the segment from Lien Park in Sioux Falls to Newton Hills State Park.
Points of interest include Big Sioux Recreation Area, Gitchie Manitou Park, the oldKlondike Mills site and Newton Hills State Park. Big Sioux and Newton Hills have canoelaunch sites and camping facilities. Park entrance license is required. Be cer tain tolocate ALL dams before setting out.
James RiverThe James River, a typical prairie stream, has been noted as the longest unnavigable
river in the world. For tunately, this distinction doesn’t apply to paddlers who travel theriver in spring and early summer. There are a number of access points near US and SDHighways.
Split Rock CreekSplit Rock Creek winds a scenic route through nor theastern Minnehaha County before
meeting the Big Sioux River east of Sioux Falls. During high water flow in spring and afterheavy summer rain, it is one of South Dakota’s best streams for white-water paddlers.The stream drops 130 feet in 8 miles between the SD Hwy 11 access west of Garretsonthrough Palisades State Park to the SD Hwy 11 access nor th of Corson. Access can befound at Palisades State Park as well as McHardy Park in Brandon. The sheer walls ofred quar tzite that line por tions of the creek provide a scenic trip for paddlers.
Vermillion RiverGenerally, this scenic river can be paddled from spring to fall from Centerville south to
the Missouri River. Launching access may be found at rights-of-way that cross the river.Late summer and fall canoeing is best from the road crossing east of Wakonda to theMissouri River. Colorful fall foliage is especially showy from Vermillion southward.

The Missouri National Recreational River preserves two stretchesof the Missouri River. Forming much of the border between SouthDakota and Nebraska, it is also par t of the nation’s Wild and ScenicRiver system. Congress added the 59-mile reach between GavinsPoint Dam and Ponca State Park in 1978 and the 39-mile reach,which includes the lower 20 miles of the Niobrara River and thelower eight miles of Verdigre Creek, between Ft. Randall Dam andRunning Water in 1991. In the eastern reach the "Big Muddy" is vast, spectacular and
unique, flowing fast past chalk bluffs, some as high as 100 feet.The river valley is as wide as two miles in some places, a testamentto the twists and turns the river has taken over the last severalthousand years. Islands, bars, and chutes attest to the

Native floodplain forests, tall and mixed grass prairie remnants,
and the rivers and tributaries themselves provide habitat for severalendangered and threatened bird and fish species.
Fishing and HuntingWalleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, and catfish
are popular catches. In season hunters take geese, ducks, quail,turkeys, pheasants, and deer. Licenses required.

state in the fall for their chance at the wily pheasant. Hotels andrestaurants gear up for the season with special menus and friendlypeople to make your stay enjoyable.Hunting is a year-round spor t in southeast South Dakota.
Though pheasant and deer are the most popular, hunters will finda wide variety of abundant game.
PheasantTraditional season: Mid-Oct. to early Jan. Season Opens Oct. 18,
2014. Preserve season, Sept. through March.Range and Habitat: Although pheasants are found statewide, the
main pheasant range encompasses the eastern two-thirds of thestate. Pheasants prefer agricultural fields, wooded draws, treestrips, wetlands and set-aside acres. Most of South Dakota isprivately owned and permission is required to hunt, but public landssuch as Game Production Areas and Walk-In Areas offer choicehabitat for pheasants. Early in the season, pheasants are scatteredin small flocks, but winter’s fury pushes birds into heavy cover andconcentrates them. Tree strips, cattail sloughs and dense weedpatches hold pheasants this time of year. Search for small, out-of-the-way pockets that may have escaped the hunting pressure oflarge groups. Small sloughs, plum thickets or even fence line vege-tation hold pheasants. Prepare for weather. Fall weather conditionsrange from 70 degrees to snow and below-zero wind chills.
East River DeerTraditional Season: Firearm, mid-late Nov. thru early Dec.
Archery, late Sept. thru mid-Jan.Range and Habitat: Crops such as corn, oats, wheat, sunflowers
and soybeans attract the whitetail deer population. Mule deerhunting is limited to counties bordering the Missouri River. Rollingpastures, tree strips, river bottoms and cattail sloughs provideescape cover for the deer.
