1.1 PCU: Basic software Windows NT 4.01.1.1 General

This section describes how to install or update additional software and back updata on PCUs on which the "Basic PCU Software with Windows NT 4.0" is pre-installed."PCU" is the abbreviation for the PC (hardware) on which the HMI (HumanMachine Interface) software (HMI SW 6.0 and later) is installed.

SINUMERIK 840D/810DPCU 50: PENTIUM II 333MHz, with min. 64 MB D-RAM, 24VDC,without system softwarefor Open Architecture (Windows NT 4.0 pre-installed)Order number: 6FC5210-0DF01-0AA0, available from 02.00

NoteInstructions on how to replace the PCU or OP012 or OP015 can be foundin:/BH/ Operator Components Manual.

1.1.2 Basic PCU software

The basic software installed on the PCU at the factory comprises the followingSW components

• MS Windows NT 4.0, English version• Internet Explorer 5.0, English version• MS-DOS, SW 6.21 and later• MPI driver, SW 5 and later• Norton Ghost, SW 6 and later• Norton Ghost Walker, SW 6 and later

Note

A guide to using the basic software can be found in file C:\Siemensd.rtf.

File C:\BaseVers.txt lists the versions of the system components of theService menu (and of Win NT) contained in the basic software.

• The Service menu is implemented in DOS.• The OEM customer starts the installation/updating of software via the

Service menu. The process is completed by Win NT (after a reboot).• Data are backed up (Backup/Restore) via the Service menu.

1.1.3 Hard disk partitioning

The hard disk is partitioned as required to install the HMI system software on thePCU under WinNT4.0. The partitioning is selected such that

• it divides the hard disk into 4 partitions (3 primary partitions and 1 extendedpartition) (hard disks smaller than 4.8 GB are not supported),

• DOS (Service menu) can be booted in addition to WinNT4.0 (HMI systemsoftware) (dual booting),

• the HMI system software (pre-installed on delivery or installed later asadditional SW by the OEM customer) operates on one NTFS partition and

• the HMI system software, the WinNT system software and DOS with theService menu all run on different partitions to ensure data integrity.

The following diagram shows how the partitions are utilized when the HMI systemsoftware is installed (the partition names are typed in italics).

Hard disk

Fig. 8-1 Utilizatin of hard disk partitions for installation of HMI system software

Partition C contains DOS 6.2 with the tools and scripts which implementthe Service menu (e.g. Ghost tools).

Partition D is used to store Ghost images, i.e. of predefined imagese.g. configured in delivery state) and of local backup images. The WinNT system software is stored on the adjacent partition so thatit is readily transferable, e.g. as an update or for driver installation.Partition D also contains the installation directory into which softwareto be installed is first copied from a remote PG/PC before the actualinstallation operation is started.

Partition E is reserved for the WinNT system software.Partition F is the application partition for the execution of applications such as the

HMI system software (including data management and temporarydata) and HMI-OEM applications, STEP7 or customer-specificapplications (e.g. Protool).

NoteThe size of the partitions shown in Fig. 8-1 depends on the size of thehard disk.

The following free space is guaranteed:On partition D: 500 MB for storing local backup images. On partition F: 1 GB for copying applications (HMI-OEM applications, STEP7,

customer applications, data e.g part programs...)
