A Sisterly Message from the Basileus

Greetings Sorors, The month of June honors many celebrations: Graduation, National Homeownership Month, National Cancer Survivors Day (June 1), and Father’s Day. I would like to acknowledge all of our Sorors who are survivors of cancer. We love you and we applaud your strength and determination. Also Sorors, I hope you treated your honey-dos with TLC on Sunday. As the first half of this year comes to a close, I would like to thank all of the current and former officers, committee chairmen, co-chairmen, and committee members for their hard work and dedication during Supreme Basileus Carolyn House Stewart’s administration and her Global Leadership Through Timeless Service (GLTTS) initiatives. Kappa Omega has done many great things because of your leadership and willingness to serve. We applaud you and say thank you!!! Beginning July 18, we will enter into a new administration under Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson. Soror Wilson will introduce her new programs and strategic plan for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I encourage those Sorors who are currently serving on a committee to continue your service and to those who have not yet joined a program or standing committee to make a decision to become involved. Alpha Kappa Alpha is lifelong membership and it cannot survive without your support, your leadership, and your service. Kappa Omega needs each of you in order to continue her legacy of leadership, sisterhood, and service to all mankind. We look forward to seeing you this Saturday for our June Relaxer and hope to see many of you in Charlotte for our 66th Boule. If you are interested in attending our chapter dinner on Tuesday, July 15, the last day to pay your $45 is this Saturday. Please see Soror Shana Scott this Saturday at chapter meeting. Sorors, enjoy your summer and please take these two months to relax, re-focus, and revitalize for there is much work and service to be done the remainder of this year. We will host our annual retreat in September. Additional information is forthcoming. Enjoy your summer!!! With Sisterly Love,

Soror Franka H. Young Basileus

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH TIMELESS SERVICE

Kappa Omega, along with the thousands of other chapters internationally is now winding down with GLOBAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH TIMELESS SERVICE. This has been our national program under the leadership of our dynamic Supreme Basileus, Soror Carolyn House Stewart. In our chapter, Kappa Omega, we have seen many successes. The EYL, Health, Global Poverty, Social Justice and Human Rights, Economic Security, and Internal Leadership for External Service – these initiatives all deserve Kudos and Accolades for their accomplishments. Thanks Soror Sarah Williams and Co-Chair Soror Tameka Dukes for going that extra mile with our Emerging Young Leaders. We saw you feed them, transport them, guide them, mentor them, lock in with them. What a job you tackled and what awesome outcomes we reaped.

Thank you, Soror Kimberly Alexander and your co-chairs, Soror Brenda Moore and Soror Mable Ann Jenkins. Thanks for always keeping us pumped up and moving. Soror Kimberly was determined to make us all healthier and we really appreciate your Zumba instruction and your tenacity. The Heifer International is grateful for our contributions, spearheaded by Soror Brenda Moss and co-chair Soror LaShander McQueen. Warren Memorial Methodist Church is also grateful for your contribution of canned goods to their Food Pantry. Question? Are you feeling a bit more economically estute? Do you now know how to chart your expenses via the internet? If you do, then please thank Soror Tracy Rolle and co-chair Soror Glynn Terrell for their leadership with the Economic Security initiative. This initiative recently had a Job Fair highlighting Resume Writing, Interviewing Tips, and Dress for Success. Thanks, Sorors for your numerous programs and activities that brought in the community as well as the Sorors.

Remember when Night Clubs were a part of our social

life? BC days, I know. Well, Social Justice and Human Rights initiative Chairperson Soror Shelia Driver and her committee went back to the night clubs.

This time, however, it was to take Baskets of Love to the ladies who find themselves victims of circumstances that cause them to “work” in the clubs. This initiative took a loving touch and a nonjudgmental word to give hope. This initiative also participated with “Free the Girls” – collecting gently used bras to be donated to the ladies who are starting out in the business world selling bras.

Soror Jan Hilliard, Chair, along with Soror Lucretia Payton Stewart designed an institute to address Internal Leadership for External Service. Although many topics were discussed, the main topics were Protocol and Parliamentary Procedure. Sorors that attended the institute felt empowered to take on Leadership Roles as a result of having attended the institute. The subjects addressed were not limited to Sorority Leadership which made it so beneficial to all.

This has been our year in review. Now, in the midst of packing for the Boule in Charlotte, North Carolina, it is indeed fitting that we be reminded that the work of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is not over. July and August are our vacation months, however, GLOBAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH TIMELESS SERVICE remains our mantra for the remainder of 2014. I anxiously await Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson’s National Program which she will unveil in Charlotte. Whatever the program may be, Kappa Omega is READY, CAPABLE, CREATIVE, CARING, LOVING, SINCERE, SECURE, COOPERATIVE, EFFECTIVE, OUTSTANDING, DETERMINED, WILLING, and SMART enough to DO IT!
