A Sisterly Message from the Basileus

Dear Sorors, I hope you enjoyed our 90th Anniversary Celebration last month. We continue to receive AKAlades from Sorors of other chapters who attended our luncheon. I would like to give a special sisterly thank you to the Basilei Council, Sorors Bettye Boyd, Marjorie H. Young, Eula Cohen, Martha Barnes, Anne Watts, Betty Clark, and Mary Ellis, for their hard work and support of our 90th Anniversary. I would especially like to give AKAlades to Soror Lucretia Payton Stewart who led this month-long celebration making sure that Kappa Omega’s Legacy of Sisterhood and Service shined bright!!! I would also like to thank our historian Soror Doris Stroud for collecting and capturing Kappa Omega’s rich history over the past years. To every soror who assisted in making this celebration a success…words cannot express how much I appreciate your love and dedication of Kappa Omega through your time and talents toward making this a special celebration. I will find some special way to thank each of you. We cannot forget to say thank you, with sisterly love, to Soror Verna Henderson, a former Basileus and our 2013 Diamond Soror, for taking the time to be with us. That is a moment that I will never forget. Sorors, as you know, our beloved Soror Mary Shy Scott is in the hospital and we ask that you lift her up in prayer, as well as her husband, Albert Scott. We also ask that you keep Soror Alfredene Scott Benton in your thoughts and prayers as this is a difficult time for her as well. We are in the month of April and we still have a lot to do. I hope that you have decided which program initiative and standing committee you would like to be a part of so that Kappa Omega can continue to provide service to all mankind and improve the operations of this chapter. The National Pan-Hellenic Council of Greater Atlanta is asking its members to donate men’s clothing which will be given to Grady Memorial Hospital. Please bring these items to chapter meeting. If you are unable to attend chapter meeting, please contact Soror Shana Scott at (678) 592-6039. If you are attending the South Atlantic Regional Conference next week, please be sure to contact Soror Brenda Moore or a member of the membership committee at chapter meeting with your contact information. Also, please be sure to bring comfortable shoes. As a part of our region’s service project, chapters are asked to donate the following items: loose leaf paper (packets), spiral notebooks, #2 pencils, colored pencils, pens, markers, highlighters, boxes of crayons, three ring binders, index cards, glue sticks, pencil sharpeners, pocket folders, composition notebooks, or gift cards. We are asking each soror who is attending the regional conference to donate one or more of these items. If you are not attending the regional conference, please bring these items to chapter meeting. We have to submit a tally of the items donated so please don’t forget to bring these items with you to chapter meeting this Saturday. Soror Icey Johnson is our point of contact for this service project. With Sisterly Love,

Soror Franka H. Young, Basileus

Social Justice & Human Rights Kappa Omega & Victoria’s Friends

On Good Friday Initiative V represented Kappa Omega in Victoria's Friends' biggest outreach of the year distributing love baskets to dancers at various clubs. We started the evening with a beautiful service at Christ Church Presbyterian in Buckhead. Our group entered new ground by going to clubs for the first time on Fulton Industrial Blvd. We distributed gift baskets in three clubs where quite a few young ladies expressed an interest in leaving that lifestyle immediately and one even gave her life to Christ right there in the dressing room. Coordinators from VF will work with each girl in their transition. If you are interested in joining this outreach ministry please see Soror Sheila Driver for an application.

The Sisterhood Connection

Initiative V - Social Justice and Human Rights is pleased to announce that we are partnering with Tapestry Youth Services, located in College Park, to provide much needed supplies to their organization.

Tapestry Youth Ministries, Inc. was established to provide for young girls living in either unsafe or unstable environments. Many of these girls had babies, but refused to enter state custody for fear of being separated from their children. There were residential care facilities for young mothers aged 17 and older, but nothing was in place for mothers under the age of 17 years. Tapestry Youth Ministries established one of the first homes in Georgia for teen mothers, between the ages of 14-17 and their babies who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

The following items are always needed and very much appreciated at the Tapestry Youth Ministries, Inc. Second Chance Homes and Transitional Living Home:

• Baby Formula (Good Start/Good Start Sensitive) • Disposable diapers and Pull-ups • Baby wipes, lotion, wash • Baby clothes, bibs • Baby towels, washcloths, blankets, crib sheets • Baby bottles and training cups • Paper goods – paper towels, toilet paper, napkins • Toiletries – deodorant, soap (Dove brand), toothpaste,

toothbrushes, combs, brushes, sanitary products, shampoo, conditioner, gel (“Motions”, “Crème of Nature”, “Isoplus”, “Pantene” brands)

• Laundry detergent (“Dreft” for babies) • Latex Gloves • Board games and child friendly toys, books, etc…

Additional Items: (new or lightly used)

• Strollers • Car seats • Play pens • Bassinets • High chairs • Swings

We would like this to be an ongoing project and would like to give our first donation this month. Therefore, we would greatly appreciate it if sorors could bring one or more of the above items to the April meeting.

A Message from the Ivy

Leaf Reporter

Hello Sorors, It is our goal to continue to put Kappa Omega in the spotlight as well as apply for the Alpha Kappa Alpha Communications Award at SARC 2014. This will require us to work diligently to spread the word of our many events to local media, radio, email, social networks and beyond for 2013. The main purpose of the public relations committee is to increase publicity of all activities and events held by your committee, initiative and the chapter. Thank you to those sorors who have responded to the call. All others please send me the name of the Soror who will represent your initiative and or committee on the public relations committee. This soror will serve as the point of contact to get pictures from if I cannot make the event, as well as write up an event/activity description. The following articles will be submitted for the upcoming issue of the Ivy Leaf:

• Chapter News - Kappa Omega Celebrates 90 years of Timeless Service

• Spotlight Achievements – Soror Marjorie H. Young recognized during the 20th Anniversary of AKA Day at the Capitol in GA

A Spring Play Day and Egg Hunting Blast

“The Ivy Community Foundation, Inc. sponsored a seasonal community service project on March 28, 2013. “The Spring Play Day and Egg Hunting Blast” was held at two local day care centers. The first activity was at the historic Gate City Day Nursery. The 58 children from the three and four year old classes were treated to a story hour. The story readers were Soror Marie Brown, Soror Mattie Coleman (dressed as a mother bunny), and Soror Brenda Moore. The children were then taught how to do the bunny hop to music by sorors. The children were bunny hopping all over the place! The finale was the much anticipated egg hunt on the playground. The children had decorated their paper bags to hold the eggs they would find. There was so much scurrying around as all the eggs were found. Each child was also given a gift bag of treats.

The same activities were repeated for 25 children in the three and four year old classes at the Magnificent Day Care Center in the afternoon. The story hour, bunny hop and egg hunt were held at the Peyton Road Track Playground. This group was just as excited about the activity as the morning group.

Several sorors participated at the two sites to help create a fun-filled and memorable experience for the three and four year old classes. A basket of treats was left at each of the centers for the staff. Our special thanks go to Ms. Doris Dickens and Ms. Debra Harris of the Gate City Day Nursery and to Ms. Edna Thomas of the Magnificent Day Care Center for giving us the opportunity to be of service to the children.

Thank you to the sorors who made donations for this service project. Thank you also to the sorors who came out to hide eggs, teach the bunny hop, take pictures and whatever was needed to make the “Spring Play Day and Egg Hunting Blast” a success.
