The event featured several talented Saint Leo musical groups, including the Saint Leo Singers, Just the FACTS, the Jazz Ensemble, and the Strings Ensemble. The concert was one of several annual performances that allow students, faculty, and staff involved in fine arts to display their talents for the University community. The theme for the night was fantasy, and the music featured included a variety of genres ranging from newer pieces such as “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri to classics such as “Nella Fantasia” by Ennio Morricone and Chiara Ferrau. “The theme for the night morphed a bit over the summer,” said Cynthia Selph, Instructor of Music for the School of Arts and Sciences and the director of Saint Leo Singers and Just the FACTS. Selph went on to explain to the audience that over the course of the evening they would be hearing music that not only explored the concept of fantasy, but also communicated how tragedies in the world can intensify mankind’s need for a dose of fantasy in reality. The Saint Leo Singers, an all student choral group, opened the concert with the choral suite from the Disney movie “Frozen,” a move that Selph admitted that she was unable to resist because of the concert’s fantasy concept. The group went on to sing “Nella Fantasia,” a choral arrangement of “Some Nights” by Fun, and “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. Just the FACTS, a choral group featuring Saint Leo staff and faculty, sang “Alice in Wonderland” by Bob Hilliard and Sammy Fain and the movie classic “Over the Rainbow” by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. Other performances of the night included the Jazz Ensemble’s renditions “Footprint” by Wayne Shorter and “Watermelon Man” by Herbie Hancock, as well as the String Ensemble’s instrumental performance of “A Thousand Years.” The ensembles were directed by Mauricio Rodriguez and Kasia Dolinska respectively. “Some Nights was the easiest song to learn, but it was the hardest to perform well,” Selph said. She went on to explain that the “Frozen” choral suite was the hardest to learn. The singers, according to Selph, found it challenging to keep up with the constantly changing tempo and get back on track if one lost their place in the song because of its lack of words. But the hard work seemed to pay off, as several audience members stayed long enough after the concert to congratulate the performers on a job well done. “I always enjoy these events. I believe the fine arts program embodies what Saint Leo is. It brings faculty, staff, and students of different skills together to make great music,” said Genny Feiler, senior. Two memorable parts of the night incorporated video with the performances. A video compilation of recent world tragedies was played during “Some Nights,” acknowledging that harsh reality often threatens fantasy. The night ended with a public showing of an original video set to “Happy,” produced and edited by Jennifer Toole and Leo Vision. The video depicted Saint Leo University students, faculty, and staff dancing to the song, along with mascot Fritz. The next big concert to be put on by the department is the annual Christmas concert, currently set for December. Senior Anna McEntee was the featured soloist of the night, and sang 'Once More I Can See' from Wonderland Alice's New Musical Adventure. Although Just the FACTS occasionally puts on solo concerts, they usually perform in concerts with other Saint Leo musical groups. In recent years, the numberof homeless students inAmerica has rapidly increased. The U.S. Department ofEducation’s most recent datareport for the 2012-2013 schoolyear has found record highnumbers of children and youngadults currently living withouthomes.

The data measured in thereport showed that homelesschildren enrolled in publicpreschool and gradeskindergarten through twelfthincreased eight percent, reaching over one million. The2010-2011 school year recorded1,065,794 homeless students, following with 1,168,354 in 2011-2012, and finally, ultimatelyreached the record high numberof 1,258,182 in 2012-2013.

According to the U.S.Department of Education, thelargest percentage (seventy-fivepercent) of these recordedhomeless students live “doubledup.” This is defined as “a termthat refers to a situation whereindividuals are unable tomaintain their housing situationand are forced to stay with aseries of friends and/orextended family members.” Thisdefinition is used by healthcenters financially backed bythe U.S. Department of Healthand Human Services (HHS),according to the National HealthCare for the Homeless Council(NHCHC).

The remaining percentageslive in shelters (sixteenpercent), without any shelter atall (about three percent), and“unaccompanied,” which isdefined as living “without anotherperson” (around six percent).

But exactly who are thesehomeless students and whatother obstacles (besides theobvious issue of theirhomelessness) do they face? Inthe 2012-2013 school year, itwas recorded that a prominentnumber of homeless studentssuffer from disabling

Number of Homeless Students in America has

Surpassed One Millionimpediments and many havedifficulty speaking properEnglish. According to the U.S.Department of Education, sixteen percent of the recordedhomeless students are childrenliving with disabilities, fourteenpercent struggle with limitedEnglish proficiency, and sixpercent are unaccompaniedyouth.

As the number of homelessstudents in America has rapidlyrisen over the course of recentyears, scores received onindividual state evaluationexaminations have slightlydecreased (approximately threepercent, overall, in grades threethrough twelve). The recordedhomeless students in the reportreleased by the U.S. Departmentof Education showed a lack inreading and math proficiencyskills.

This data does not includechildren that are too young tostart school yet or ones that donot attend public schools. Therefore, there are a number ofother homeless children thatsimply may not attend school forone reason or another or justmay not attend public school, which is why they were notincluded in the U.S. Departmentof Education’s most recentreport.

Homeless children likely fallbehind in school due toexhaustion that results from therestless nights caused by lackof shelter, the dangers of beingon their own and hunger.

However, despite theseincredible odds against them, some students that werepreviously homeless at somepoint in their lives have overcomethe hindering obstacles ofhomelessness by beingaccepted to and ultimatelyattending college.

For example, according toPeople Magazine online, LosAngeles teen James Ward grewup homeless, yet was acceptedto multiple colleges in 2013 andwith the help of a proactivementor and a donationcampaign, ultimately went on toattend Howard University.

According to the online blogHello Beautiful, D.C. teenRashema Melson lived in ahomeless shelter with hermother and two siblings for twoyears until she earned a 4.0GPA in high school andeventually was awarded a fullride scholarship to GeorgetownUniversity. Additionally, according to CNN online, NorthCarolina teen Dawn Loggins, abandoned by her drug-abusingparents and a part time janitor atthe high school she attended, was admitted to HarvardUniversity and is now a memberof their class of 2016.

Also according to theNational Health Care for theHomeless Council (NHCHC),health centers financially backedby the U.S. Department ofHealth and Human Services(HHS) use two technically“official” definitions ofhomelessness.

The first is, “an individualwho lacks housing (withoutregard to whether the individualis a member of a family),including an individual whoseprimary residence during thenight is a supervised public orprivate facility (e.g., shelters)

that provides temporary livingaccommodations, and anindividual who is a resident intransitional housing.”

The second states, “Ahomeless person is an individualwithout permanent housing whomay live on the streets; stay in ashelter, mission, single roomoccupancy facilities, abandonedbuilding or vehicle; or in anyother unstable or non-permanentsituation.”

“As far as education goes, Ithink we need to promote schoolto homeless students andattempt to get them to actuallywant to go. If the desire to evengo at all isn’t there, how can wehelp them get out of poverty? Ifthey can barely make it throughthe day because they don’t haveaccess to the necessities, howare they supposed to focus or dowell? We need to give themhope in order for them tosucceed,” said Junior Seri Sipe.

To help more and morestudents get off the streets andeventually into college, manyorganizations along with the helpof advocates are working to helpunaccompanied homeless youthaccess financial aid.

Halloween5 Famous Haunted Houses in the World

By Kristen Collins

Contributing Writer

Ghosts, insanity, and unexplainabledeaths are in allcorners of the world, and these Top 5explore the creepiesthauntings andparanormal activitiesknown to humankind. From America andScotland to the Westand Japan to theEast, no place issafe from thesupernatural.

Leap Castle is thought to be the longest inhabited castle in Ireland, built in theearly 1500s by the O’Carroll’s. The castle has a bloody history with warring clansand sieges from enemy soldiers. With a place filled with bloodshed and tragedyfor decades, it is no wonder the castle is thought to be one of the most hauntedplaces in the world.

There are 8 specific haunting s that go on in Leap Castle. A few of the creeperones are the Elemental, Emily and Charlotte, and the Red Lady. The Elemental isa monstrous skeletal creature with human-like features, a dormant spirit thatcomes out when emotions are high. Emily is a little girl who is seen falling out ofthe window, and Charlotte is seen walking through castle with a disfigured legdragging behind her. The Red Lady is a tall woman cloaked in red who carriesaround some blade.

Tours can be arranged to go through the Leap Castle for those wanting ahistorical and haunting adventure.

Waverly Hills Sanitarium was created in 1926 in Louisville, Kentucky. Thehospital was built during the time of the “white death” – tuberculosis – and becamea place of torture rather than healing. Horrible methods of treatment were given topatients, and there were only a lucky few who got out alive, while the others wentdown the “body chute.”

The hospital has a reputation of having many forms of paranormal activityfrom ghosts to suicides. Some of the hauntings include a little boy seen with aball, a woman with bleeding wrists pleading for help and doors that slam shut orwindows that seem to have lights on. The suicides come from the fifth floor inroom 502 where people have jumped to their deaths, nurses have hungthemselves and a disembodied voice says “get out.” The hospital has officiallybeen shut down, but it is now a place for teenagers to visit, homeless to takeshelter or supernatural enthusiasts to go on ghost hunts.

Aokigahara Forest is at the base of Mount Fuji, Japan, a beautiful landscapemarked with insidious tales starting around the 1950s. The density of the treesshrouds the sun and buffers out any wind, leaving the forest dark and misty. All soundis muted and not even the sound of wildlife disturbs this eerie place. Aokigahara isalso known as the Suicide or Hanging Forest since every year hundreds of people killthemselves within the depths of the forest.

One of the weird activities that mark the forest as a cursed dwelling is the factthat electronics and compasses do not seem to work. Bones and discarded shoeslways seem to be found across the ground or tangled in tree roots.

Today, tourists come through Aokigahara Forest because of the magnificentscenery, unexplored caverns, and hiking exhibitions. However, it still holds true to itsnickname, with many people still making their way to the forest for death.

Winchester Mystery House began its strange construction around 1884 in Santa Clara Valley, California. A familycurse had been put on the Winchester family for the deaths correlated to creation of the Winchester gun. As the last living member ofthe family, Sarah Winchester was told to build a house and never stop building if she wanted to live.

The house itself is said to hold in spirits because of the strange and confusing design that was meant to act as protection fromthe supernatural. There are rooms with no entrances, upside down stairs and pillars, secret rooms, and many structures made up of13 parts.

Winchester Mystery House is now a place that people can visit for those wanting to experience a haunting or two. Some of theweird activities are the mischievous spirits that create havoc for employees, footsteps being heard in the empty house, and the pianothat is said to play on its own. To date, the house is still being built upon, so the supernatural housed inside do not stray back out.

Locals of reported that the dolls talk to one another and sometimes turn theirheads when people pass by them. With 50 years of hanging dolls, the island has acreepy aura with weather-torn dolls and sightless eyes.

Halloween makes it like you wereat your own home,” said SeniorMcKenzie Kaylor.

There are four dollar stores inDade City. I went to Dollar Tree at12504 U.S. 301 to finddecorations. I bought a pumpkinfuzzy streamer, white spiderwebs, and a large black felt spiderweb for all under $5. The key is tonot spend a fortune on thedecorations but to evenlydistribute them around the room. Some other stores offer plasticskeletons and decorativepumpkins.

The Pumpkin streamer is long

and draws the eye. A suggestionis to make this a border or tostretch the streamer until it is atits full length. This streamer couldborder the top of a window tomake the dorm room appear largerwhile being festive. Anothersuggestion is to border a door or abulletin board. This will pull thewhole room together in itsHalloween spirit.

Creating a balance in yourresidence room when it comes todecorations is vital. The classicspider webs are perfect to fill anydead space. Popular places to putthese spider web decorations areon doors. If you are a commuterand are looking to decorate yourroom back home, you can evendecorate your ceilings. Universityresidents are not allowed to placeanything on ceilings, according tosafety regulations.

“I thought it was kind ofspooky and creative that freshmangirls decided to put spider webson their door to make it feel morelike Halloween,” said FreshmanMelanie Lawton.

At Dollar Tree, there werealso skull, bat, pumpkin andspider web felt cutouts. These arelarger in size. Buy just acouple of these andyour wardrobe orcloset doorswill be deckedout. This isanother great wayto fill any gaps.

Many folks are familiar with theAlien movie franchise and horror icon theAlien. For years, the franchise hasmade multiple attempts to create horrorgames based on the movies, and manyhave failed both financially and critically. However, their newest attempt, “AlienIsolation,” made by SEGA, has provento be successful as it creates an intenseand ominous survival atmosphere.

The player plays as technicianAmanda Ripley, the daughter of EllenRipley from the Alien movies, who isoffered to go aboard the “SevastopolStation.” The station is said to have theflight record of the ship the “Nostromo,”which her mother, Ellen, was a crewmember of. Amanda agrees, and shetravels to the station on a courier shipwith two other members from her team. However, once they reach theirdestination, something seems off ascommunications go dead and thestation appears to be damaged withfloating debris all around it. As the debrishits the courier ship, Ripley and theother two crewmen become separatedas she boards the station alone. Shesoon finds that most of the individuals inthe station have been killed bysomething non-human. Now it is up toRipley find the others and survive, whilebeing stalked and hunted down by theextra-terrestrial predator known as Alien.

The gameplay is ingenious as itadds multiple ways go about survivingon the station. One way is the itemmaker, which allows the player tocreate medical kits to heal the player, and multiple distraction items forwhenever the player has to slip by thecreature undetected. The creature hasa mechanic where if the player usesthe items too often, the Alien will learnfrom the previous distractions and willnot go after the item. Another way tosurvive in the game is to use manydifferent routes to get around thestation, including the vents and othersections of the station. Though thismeans it will take longer to get to themain objective, there is a lower chance

Classic jump scares and humanmonstrosities are a great way to startoff October, especially with games like“Outlast,” a game that can brighten anyhorror fan’s night on the PC. The gameis made by the independent companyRed Barrels, a gaming studio thatfocuses on “single-player, downloadablegames.”

“Outlast” revolves around themysterious Mount Massive Asylum andthe strange happenings going on in thisso-called abandoned facility. MileUpshur is a freelance journalist who

players control to investigate leads oninhume experimentations. Armed witha video camcorder, the players mustfind their way through the game, collecting confidential files thatdocument the nefarious activities ofMurkoff Corporation.

“Outlast” is an adrenaline filledenvironment where escape is the onlyoption in a place overrun with disfiguredinmates, cannibalistic twins, themonstrous giant known as Walker, crazy doctors who cut off various bodyparts in the name of science and asupernatural entity kept deep in thebowels of the asylum, the Walrider.

The game has great appeal to the

classical horror settings of an asylum.“Outlast” is divided into four areas withinthe building so players do not growbored of the simple indoor gameplay. The lobby, the asylum, the sewers, andthe high tech labs take the playerthrough four different horror gamingexperiences.

The Mount Massive Lobby takesthe generic setting of an office and flipsit to reflect the gruesome game withblood splatters, long hallways, flickeringlights, and barred-up doors. The secondlevel brings the players into the innerworkings of the asylum where it isoverflowing with grotesque inmates, mountains of bodies, bloody floors, and

Alien Isolation: A Trip Back to the 1980’s

unsanitary structures. The two next floors are more

action-packed and deal with a lot offast-paced running. The third level goesinto the bowels, more specifically, thesewers, which are flooded withquestionable substances. The final leveltakes the players to the high-tech,gleaming walls of Murkoff Corporation’sexperimentation facilities.

The gameplay is focused on asingle-player, first person perspectivewhere the player can do nothing butuse the power of sneaking to bypassthe usually violent inmates. Instead of ahealth bar, the player gets one chanceto get caught before being killed in avariety of ways depending on whichcharacter is the fatal second hit. Thegame is very simplistic in its storyline.

Those who have not experiencedthe horror genre of games have to takeinto consideration that there are scenesthat could be considered offensive. It isa gory game and there are anabundance of nude charactersthroughout the gameplay. Just as aforewarning as well, there are somescenes where it deals with, though notgraphic, sexual content. “Outlast” is amemorable gaming experience forthose who are in the holiday cheer offear and nightmares. The seasonalgame is great with the right amount ofscares and suspense. I would rate“Outlast” as a 4/5 because, while it is agood game, “Outlast” is only fun as aone-time play through.

of being caught by the Alien. There are other enemies in this

game besides the creature itself, suchas robotic androids called “WorkingJoes” and the remaining survivors whoshoot out of fear and survival instinct. These other enemies help broaden thegame’s difficulty as the player has morethan one enemy to look out for. Ripley’smotion tracker in the game shows thegreen dots of all the enemies, howclose they are and what direction theyare heading.

The game’s environment alsoaffects the way the player feels as theytraverse throughout the corridors androoms. Some parts of the station areenormous, dark and bloody. They give a

dramatic and cautious atmosphere, making the player want to becomemore aware of his/her surroundings. The mechanic of having sounds makingthe Alien aware of Ripley also helpswith this atmosphere as it creates moreobstacles for the player to deal with.

If there is one small thing wrongwith this game, it’s the crashing withthe PC version. Though this doesn’thappen to often and or never at all, multiple instances have shown up withPC gamers within the first 24 hours ofrelease.

This Alien game has finally givenmany fans what they wanted out of thefranchise and has lived up to itsexpectations. I give it a 4.5/5.

The goal fo the game is to lure the alien into a remote part of the station where it can be contained.

The game is set in the mountainous, remote area of Lake County, CO.

As one of the many ghoulishmonsters of the Halloween holiday, thevampire has been a big cinema hit inHollywood’s past. The latest vampiremovie to hit the silver screen thisseason is the retelling of the Count’slegend titled “Dracula Untold,” directedby Gary Shore.

With the story set during theMiddle Ages, the Sultan of Turkey is inneed of young, trained soldiers to fightfor him. After many battles, one soldier,Vlad “the Impaler” Tepes (Luke Evans),escapes and becomes the Prince ofTransylvania. As his nickname implieshe is known for impaling his enemieson wooden stakes to cause otherspsychological warfare. On one of hisventures through his territory, Vlad andhis men come upon a cave that holds adark secret to it. A master vampire(Charles Dance) shows himself andslaughters Vlad’s men. After Vladescapes, the Turks begin threatening totake his son and many other youngboys in Transylvania. Vlad has nochoice but to ask for aid from themaster vampire, and he obtains thevampiric powers to stop the threat. IfVlad cannot stop himself from drinkingthe blood of a human during the threedays before the Turks arrive, he will notbe able to go back to being human everagain.

The special effects in the movie arespectacular and carry over into the

largely scaled battle field in which Vladcauses devastation and shows hispowers. With an original plot, this moviebrings a different light to the Count thatnot many have seen before, as he isnow a protagonist warrior fighting tosave his family and kingdom. Vampiresgenerally fall into the horror genre, butthis movie breaks that stereotype byfalling into the action and dramagenres. The movie brings back thelegendary lore of vampires by evenincluding silver as one of the

weaknesses Vlad obtains, and sunlightcausing intense burning and damage tohis body.

The issues with this movie are thatwith all of the action scenes are so builtup, some of the payoffs are not as goodas they could have been, makingVlad’s powers look very limited. Thelove scenes in the movie also feel slowand too quiet for the drama in this film, making the movie a snore fest until theaction kicks up. Another issue is thepredictability of the movie, being more

towards the three day consequence, aswe all know him as Count Dracula. Theaudience already knows he fails fromnot drinking any human blood and soonthe film turns into a wait to see whogets bit and makes him stay a vampire.

With all of those issues laid out, there is still a lot of good moments inthe film that make it worth going to seeonce. If you love vampire films, or arelooking for a good action movie, definitely give this a screening. Thismovie gets a 3.5/5.

Will Vlad’s subjects be grateful for his sacrifice, or will they fear him for using dark magic?

In the past, Janet Jackson, JustinTimberlake, Beyoncé, Prince and theRolling Stones have performed at theSuper Bowl. How will Katy Perrymeasure up to those who came beforeher?

Unfortunately, for the Rihanna andColdplay fans, they did not impressESPN against Perry while auditioningfor the opportunity to perform at theSuper Bowl.

Perry has previously made thecomment she is "not the kind of girlwho would pay to play the Super Bowl,"according to Super Bowl Nation. TheNFL was unsure that they would wanther to perform if she didn’t feel like shewas “the type of girl.” It has not beencleared up as to why minds werechanged on either side, the NFL orPerry, but it will make for a great show, according to Super Bowl Nation. However, Perry blew them away inamazement during her audition, resulting in this performance being anexperience that would not want to bemissed.

This is not the first time that Perryhas appeared on ESPN; she has beenon College Game Day earlier in 2014.

Perry impressed ESPN with her"energetic, exuberant pop," thefamiliarity of her music and her "show-stopping performances," according toFOX59. Many of her songs, such as“Birthday” and “Roar” from her 2013release “Prism,” in addition to her well-known older hits, “Firework,” “Peacock,”“California Gurls” and “I Kissed A Girl”were high on the charts. Fans of thiscombination ranged from all ages, making Perry's music known to almosteveryone.

Without her show-stoppingperformances, ESPN may have chosena different Super Bowl performer. Perryis not only pleasing to the ears of many, but her performances are captivatingwith the costumes in which she createsher own "whimsical wonderland,"according to FOX59.

Still there are concerns that Perryis "not the kind of girl that performs forthe Super Bowl" after all. Super BowlNation worries that there have beenconflicts between the way the NFL andPerry likes to run the performances.Perry simply likes to set her own rules. Some worry about this experiencebeing "one that got away," according toSuper Bowl Nation.

Rumors on the song choice are stillcircling throughout multiple newsarticles and social media. Perry hashad multiple hits since her singing

career has started. "We’re betting she’ll pick ‘Roar,’

‘Firework’ and ‘This Is How We Do,”said blogger Andrew Sims.

Regardless of what song the Perrydecides to choose or if being a Super

Bowl performer was a goal of hers, shewill make for an excellent 2015 SuperBowl Halftime show.

“If you're presenting yourself withconfidence, you can pull off pretty muchanything,” Perry stated.
