The Right Retail Stock inthe Right Retail ConditionThe used car market has gained realmomentum in recent months, with someareas of the market proving particularly ‘hot’.That is the only conclusion we can makefrom the sales activity we have seen acrossthe SMA network over the last 6 weeks.

In part the challenging economic conditions can beseen as directly impacting the demand for slightlyolder stock with good provenance, because this is onearea of activity that is noticeably buoyant. In thismarket segment, it is clear from close analysis that theprices being achieved at both retail and auction levelare commonly well in excess of pricing guides.Premiums are being seen particularly when a car hasdocumented history and has been well prepared.

Our conclusion is that consumer motoring habits arefacing up to the austerity conditions, with buyersopting for slightly older cars, but one where goodcondition is a prerequisite. The shift is not justreserved for smaller cars; demand is strong across thesector right through to premium cars. An interestingaside to this shift in consumer buying trend is therecord sales we are seeing at our DVLA personalisedregistration auctions. It appears that buyers are happyto drive an older car, but on occasion like it to sport aprivate number plate.

Meeting the market as we move towards the end ofthe year will, as always, require smart, nimbleentrepreneurial thinking, and at SMA we can help. Oursuccess is seeing more vendors offer their carsthrough our auction centres and online channels, andour Technical Services operation has been very busypreparing more cars to provide retailers withforecourt ready stock rapidly and to a clearlydocumented price.
