31% of India’s population contributes over 70% of nation's GDP

High rate of urbanisation (urban population of India in 1901 was 11.4%)

Most cities are equipped with substandard and obsolete features

Housing problem in cities compounded with sanitation, water supply, sewerage, electricity and problem of underemployment

5What is a Smart City

A city supposed to provide decent quality of life to its citizens and sustained environment

Utilisation of modern day technologies Instrumented, interconnected and intelligent

city

Page 6: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

6Strategies

Area based development

(i) city improvement (retrofitting)

(ii) city renewal (redevelopment)

(iii) city extension (greenfield development) Pan city development

Page 7: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

7Retrofitting

Development of existing built-up area Makes the area more efficient and liveable Existing structures to remain intact Approx. 500 acres area to be considered To be packed with more intensive

infrastructure service levels Completion in shorter time frame

Page 8: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

8Redevelopment

Replacement of existing built-up area New layout with enhance infrastructure using

mixed land use and increased density Only 50 acres of area to be considered High FSI and high ground coverage

Page 9: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

9Redevelopment model

Bhendi Bazaar Project, Mumbai

Page 10: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

10Greenfield development

Planning in a previously vacant area More than 250 acres Address the need of expanding polulation Affordable housing for poor e.g. GIFT city in Gujrat

Gujrat International and Finance Tech (GIFT) city

Page 12: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

12Pan-city development

Selected Smart Solutions to existing city wide infrastructure

Use of technology, information and data to make services better

e.g. Intelligent traffic management system

Smart metering in water supply

Page 13: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

13Component of Smart Cities(Smart Solutions)

Page 14: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

14Smart Energy

Technologies utilized to enhance sustainability with better management of natural resources

Renewable energy is given priority Saving in energy with digital meters, LED

lights, sensors, solar appliances etc. Establishment of nationwide Smart Grid

Page 15: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

15Smart Grid

Power consumption of buildings can be monitored and controlled on a real time basis

Better handling of demand variation Help predict voltage interruption Efficiency of electricity distribution 24x7 electricity for all ₹500 crores allocated for 14 pilot smart grids

Page 16: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

16Smart Solid Waste Management

Efficient recycling, organics management and composting

Use of GIS and RF technologies can boost logistical capabilities in collection and disposal

Material Recovery Facility (MRF), Bio Digesters, WTE facilities reduce environmental impact

No landfills Swachh Bharat Mission

Page 17: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

17Smart Water Management

Use of water meters Filtered water for public consumption using

RO, UV etc. Infrastructures with water harvesting No complete relying on groundwater Integrated Ganga Conservation Mission

“Namami Gange” ₹2100 crores in 2015-16 to restore the river

Page 18: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

18Smart Transportation

To reduce traffic congestion and optimize the flow

Live traffic monitoring using IP cameras A single electronic card to pay for all

transportation needs (metro, city buses, parking, subways)

Promote electric and hybrid automobiles Govt. to spend 14000 crores over subsidy

Page 19: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

19Smart Transportation

Intelligent lighting system which responds to volume of traffic (Delhi)

Waterways; a cheaper option for transporting goods

Use of Light Metro-rails, Monorail, Subways for public transport as it encourage multiple land-use

Use of separate bicycle lanes

Page 20: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

20

Multiple land use

Page 21: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

21Smart Housing

Building to be equipped with automation devices Which includes Fire alarm, auto climate control,

smart water and power meters, Use of ramps and Auto-walks Solar panels and Water harvesting systems are

primary requirements Expected savings; 30% in maintenance, 40% in

energy usage, 30% in external water supply

Page 22: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

22Challenges

Each city requires ₹100 crore each from central and state govt.

Cities have to focus on their identity for quick recovery of investment

Municipalities to be made capable to run such and ideal city

Lack of coordination between various ministries Surrounding area needs to be put in integrated

regional planning framework

Page 23: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

23Smart Cities in the World

Different parameters for different countries Viz. Fast delivery of services, innovations, Low

carbon economy etc Top mid sized smart cities in the world are

Vienna, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Vancouver

Vacuum connected trash bins, Zero emission, bike sharing, V2G technology (vehicle to grid)

Page 24: Smart City Project in India SOURABH KUMAR B120497CE 1

24Conclusion

On the basis of their economic identity 98 cities has been selected after the Intrastate competition

20 cities in the first phase Motto is “Cities should work for us not vice versa” ₹7060 crores allocated in 2014-15 Union Budget Overall it would focus on improving infrastructure

to make them liveable.
