Smart Commute Mississauga has made

tremendous progress over the past five years. Our success

can be attributed to our strong focus on delivering

exciting and engaging programming, the continuous

development and refinement of our tools and marketing

executions, our dedicated staff and the commitment of

our members.

Smart Commute is an initiative of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton

Area. Smart Commute Mississauga is a non-profit Transportation Management Association (TMA) that works to

reduce traffic congestion and to take action on climate change, by encouraging the use of sustainable modes

of transportation in the City of Mississauga and the Pearson Airport Area.

Smart Commute Mississauga and Smart Commute Pearson Airport Area are part of a network of Transportation

Management Associations (TMAs) across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) that works with over

177 employers and 430,000 employees.

1

To make commuting easier, healthier, and more

Glenn GumulkaExecutive Director

We are very proud to have celebrated a true milestone for our organization

- our five-year anniversary. This past year has been extremely productive for

Smart Commute Mississauga. We expanded our service area by launching Smart

Commute Pearson Airport Area and received a generous Community Grant

from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to develop and unveil our ACTIVATE

Your Commute, Walking & Cycling Program – the first program of its kind in

Canada. By enhancing our marketing campaigns, Smart Commute Mississauga

was recognized by Metrolinx for having the highest number of carpools formed.

We also refreshed our workshop program to include new and exciting workshops,

increased our internal capacity by hiring new employees, and added five new

corporate businesses, bringing our total to 29 workplaces in the City of Mississauga

and Pearson Airport Area.

2

As one of North America’s leading commercial real estate developers and

owners, sustainability and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are key

commitments for both Oxford Properties Group and our tenants. Our partnership

with Smart Commute Mississauga demonstrates that strong commitment. As a

founding member, Oxford Properties Group has proudly supported Smart Commute

Mississauga since its inception in 2006. Our membership helped Oxford Properties

Group obtain green building credits towards both BOMA BESt and LEED EB:O&M

certification, and has provided Oxford tenant employees with viable commuting

options that help lower our tenants’ parking demands and carbon footprints. I

am extremely proud of Smart Commute Mississauga’s incredible accomplishments

over the last five years.

The organization has worked tirelessly to understand the specific needs of individual employers, created

effective commuter solutions for their employees, and successfully reduced traffic congestion in the City of

Mississauga and Pearson Airport Area. I look forward to our continued partnership and seeing what great work

the organization will achieve in the future.

Sante EspositoBoard Chair

The culmination of these activities helped us reduce a total of 8.4 million vehicle kilometres (km) travelled

and saved 1.8 million kilograms (kg) of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) since our inception in 2006. Every

year, we are thrilled that our impact continues to grow. On behalf of Smart Commute Mississauga and Smart

Commute Pearson Airport Area, I would like to thank our workplace employers, funders, and sponsors for their

remarkable commitment and support over this past year. We are very proud of the incredible partnerships

we have built and could not have achieved this success without their true dedication to our program. Looking

forward, we will continue to recruit new businesses and explore many initiatives that will help us maintain our

strong momentum over the next five years.

The year 2010 was another outstanding year for

Smart Commute Mississauga. On March 31, 2010, we

proudly celebrated our five-year anniversary. At the

2010 Smart Commute Awards Metrolinx recognized

Smart Commute Mississauga as the top performing

Transportation Management Association (TMA).

Since our inception in March 2006, Smart Commute

Mississauga has helped employers and their employees

reduce 8.4 million kilometres (km) of vehicle travel, 1.8

million kilograms (kg) of greenhouse gas emissions,

and garner approximately $3.5 million in commuter

savings.

Our exciting and innovative programming drives employee engagement, while attracting interest from the

surrounding business community.

In May 2010, Smart Commute Mississauga launched

the ACTIVATE Your Commute, Walking & Cycling

Program – the most interactive and dynamic program of

its kind in Canada. The program encourages commuters

to leave their cars at home and reduce their carbon

footprint by walking and/or cycling to work. ACTIVATE

Your Commute program promotes employee health

and wellness while providing significant environmental,

transportation, and economic benefits for both the

employee and the workplace.

ACTIVATE Your Commute, Walking & Cycling Program

received a generous Community Grant from the Ontario

Trillium Foundation to help develop its unique and

interactive online tracking tool that allows employees to

set personal goals, log their daily walking and cycling trips,

and gain immediate feedback by converting kilometres

travelled into calories burned and greenhouse gas

emissions saved. To date, a total of 18 Smart Commute

member workplaces have joined the program and have

helped reduce more than 54,000 kilometres (km) of

vehicle travel and 12,600 kilograms (kg) of greenhouse

gas emissions (GHGs).

As Smart Commute’s

signature commuter program,

the Carpool Zone continues to

have tremendous momentum.

Through our exciting campaigns

such as WIN it ALL this FALL and

Carpool Zone

5

Carpool & WIN, more than 1,500

employee commuters in the City of

Mississauga and Pearson Airport

Area registered on the Carpool

Zone and formed more than 240

new carpools in 2010.

The Discount Transit Program is another example of our innovative

programming. Launched in 2009, the program allows employers to

qualify for a matching discount when they invest in public transit for

their staff.

In 2011, Smart Commute Mississauga completed its Discount Transit

Program Pilot Project which demonstrated that the program converted

15 percent of drivers to transit users. The program also significantly

increased the frequency of ridership among its participants. This pilot

project wrapped up in 2011 and is currently being evaluated.

The key to our success has been reaching and engaging employee commuters through our exciting,

year-round campaigns and promotions such as Clean Air Commute, Smart Commute Week, WIN it ALL this FALL,

and Carpool & WIN. By offering great prizes and incentives, we are able to generate excitement, encourage

employee participation in our campaigns, and reduce single occupancy vehicle travel.

Each year, Smart Commute Mississauga and Smart Commute Pearson Airport Area host a series of networking

and outreach events that drive employer interest, generate excitement about our programming, and encourage

employee commuters to try sustainable transportation options.

Bike to Work Day has become an exciting,

and popular event across the Greater Toronto

and Hamilton Area (GTHA) that promotes cycling

to work as a viable and environmentally-friendly

commute option.

On May 31, 2010, more than 350 participants

sported fluorescent orange and green t-shirts,

left their cars at home, and pedalled their way on

Bike to Work Day – that’s more than double the

number of participants from 2009! Smart Commute

Mississauga is proud to announce that Bike to Work

Day 2010 has been the most successful event to date

and has helped to eliminate more than 8,000 km

of vehicle travel and 1,920 kg of greenhouse gas

emissions from entering the atmosphere.
