Smart for Life Cookie Dietdeclares war on fatUncle Sass Needs You!

In our rst newsletter o the year,

I would like to declare war on at.

The statistics are heading in the

wrong direction. I am ed up and

believe the only way to succeed

    against overweight and obesity is

    to go to WAR.

Let me explain. When we are at war, the level

o ocus and investment o resources is high and

unied. When we are at war, the whole nation is

ocused on success and working together to achieve

the goal. Patriotism is soaring and fags are fying

everywhere. Unortunately, we have major ood

companies who are not pulling their weight but

increasing ours! They must join the ght against

overweight and obesity.I do not want more legislation or protests in the

Great weight loss ideasSushi Hand RollClick above to see the entire

Thin women make12% more money thanoverweight womenIn a study perormed at Cornell University [http://jobs.aol.

    com/articles/search/?q=The+ugly+truth], women who put

on an additional 64 pounds, had a 9% decrease in salary.

This is in line with other studies including the U.S. Bureau

o Labor Statistics that showed a 12% reduction in income

between overweight and obese woman to their normal BMI

    counterpart.

streets, but a quiet, more peaceul

movement. In the end, i we

should lose this fght, the victims

are you and your children. The

price is an early death, heart

    disease, diabetes, depression and

the unhappy eeling and liestylewhen you are overweight or obese.

The win is a longer lie, more

    activity and strength, less disease,

and the joy o being thin and

    healthy. Ater all Nothing tastes

    as good as thin eels.

Unortunately, we all have to be

dedicated soldiers in this war. The

    ollowing strategy will become our

only weapons to fght: Stop buying poor quality ood

    containing high at and high

sugar. Read the labels. I you

    stop buying them, companies will

    not make them.

Eat less and eat more oten.

    Increase the amount o green,

    leay vegetables eaten daily.

    Stay away rom shel-stable,

    preservative flled oods (oods

    other diet programs provide that

do not need to be rerigerated).

    Preerably, move towards eating

    natural and organic oods.

    Exercise on a regular basis

    unless you are actively dieting.

I you have a medical issue, see

your doctor and deal with it.

Finally, be an example to your

kids: Lose weight and eat right.

    Working in an emergency room,

I have seen people who were

overweight at 12 years old, come

in at the age o 30 with heart

attacks. I have seen miserable and

    depressed 16-year-olds, overweight

teens without motivation to live a

    ull lie.

We are defnitely losing this war

    now. Lets work together, rally

the troops and take action against

    the enemy or ourselves and

generations to come. I not, there

will be much more suering and

death than many o the wars we

    have ought in the past.

Join the fght now! I you need

to lose weight, get started. I

you are at a healthy weight, help

someone who needs to lose. I you

work or a ood company, see what

improvements you can make. I you

are in government, do your part andkeep to your promises. I you are in

    the entertainment business, lead

by example. I you are a health care

    provider, join the American Society

    o Bariatric Physicians (http://www.

    asbp.org/).

Together and with hard work we

    can win. Never surrender.

    Dr. Sass

Finally, be an example to your kids: Lose weightand eat right.

    War on Fat (cont.)

Unortunately, there are a lot o negative stereotypes

about overweight people (i.e.: They are lazy, sloppy,

etc.) that are simply not true according to the Council

on Size and Weight Discrimination. Many plus-size

women who have positive phone interviews, nd the

job has been lled when they show up or in person

    interview.

We should all be aware o this type o discrimination

and make sure that we are not victims nor contribute

to it. People should lose weight or health and

personal reasons, not to qualiy or a better paying

job. Unortunately many o these plus-size women

are not plus-size because they want to be, but

because they have a metabolic issue.

They cant change this medical problem any morethan they can change when they will get their

period, says Dr. Sass who treats these metabolic

    issues on a regular basis.

These people can, with the proper therapy, lose the

weight, but to discriminate against these people

who already have a major issue is just plain wrong.

    Shame on anyone who discriminates.

    will answer them inupcoming newsletters.

    Q. I heard that women with bighips are healthier. Is that

    true?

A.At the Institute o PreventativeMedicine in Copenhagen,

    researchers ound those with wider

hips also appeared to be protected

    against heart conditions.

    Women with a hip measurement

smaller than 40, or a size 14 would

not have this protection they said.

The researchers say hip at contains a

    benecial natural anti-infammatory.

This is where the apple and pear

shapes come into play. I you are

shaped like an apple, meaning your

weight is around your waist, you are

at higher risk or heart disease. I

your weight is around your hips, you

are actually better o than thinner

women. This hip at is also very

    resistant to

    weight loss.

    I always

    recommend

    to women who

    have at around

    their hips, to start

    appreciating the

    act that they may

    live longer because

    o them. Plus,

    many people

    like the shape

    o these

    curves.
