Viega Barrier PEX Tubing

3 of 45SM-HC 0621 Snow Melt Systems

1 Viega Barrier PEX Tubing

DescriptionThis specification designates the requirements for Viega Barrier cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing for use in hydronic heating and cooling systems. Viega Barrier PEX includes an oxygen barrier layer that helps restrict the passage of oxygen through the wall of the tubing. All Viega PEX is manufactured and tested to the requirements of ASTM F876, F877, F3253, F3348, CSA B137.5 and is CTS-OD (copper tube size - outer dimension controlled) with an SDR (standard dimension ratio) 9 wall thickness. Viega Barrier PEX is compatible with both Viega PEX press fittings and F1807 PEX crimp fittings. Viega has no control over the quality of other manufacturers, therefore, we do not extend any warranty to those components that are not supplied by Viega.

MaterialsViega Barrier PEX tubing is produced from cross-linkable, high density polyethylene resin. This cross-linkable resin is produced by grafting organo-silane molecules onto a base polyethylene chain. A catalyst that initiates the cross-linking process is blended with the resin before extrusion. Cross-linking is conducted after extrusion by exposing the tubing to heat and moisture (steam). Viega Barrier PEX includes four layers. The first layer is cross-linked, high density polyethylene. The second layer is an adhesive for the third layer, the ethylene vinyl alcohol layer (EVOH oxygen barrier). The fourth layer is another thin layer of polyethylene, applied on the outside to protect the EVOH layer from damage. EVOH is highly resistant to the passage of oxygen.

MarkingandCertificationTubing is marked with manufacturer, Viega Barrier, nominal size, rating, codes and standards, approvals, date, material code, and location of production (i.e., xxxxFT Viega Barrier ½" SDR-9 CTS PEX5306 100 PSI @ 180F [cNSF®us-pw-rfh ASTM F876/F877 CSA B137.5] FS/SD 25/50 CAN/ULC S102.2 ICC ES-PMG®-1015/1038 HUD MR 1276 Date Code Material Code MADE IN THE USA 0005FT. Tubing is third party tested to the requirements of the stated ASTM and CSA standards. Tubing includes incremental footage markings to assist with loop layout. Viega Barrier PEX tubing is certified to NSF 61 and 14 for use as part of, or connected to a potable water system.

RecommendedUsesInstall Viega Barrier PEX in accordance with installation manuals provided by manufacturer and applicable code requirements. Water or air can be used to pressure test the system. Please follow manufacturer’s requirements on pressure and length of time. Viega Barrier PEX is rated for six months UV protection. For information on the suitability for other applications, contact your Viega representative.

HandlingandInstallationViega Barrier PEX tubing is recommended for hydronic heating, cooling, and snow melting systems using water or a water/glycol mix as the heat transfer media. The tubing is also NSF rated safe for potable water. Tubing may be installed in concrete, gypsum based lightweight concrete, sand, asphalt (in accordance with special guidelines), in or under wood flooring, or behind wallboard or plaster. Viega Barrier PEX may also be used as transfer lines for baseboard heating systems with a maximum operating temperature of 200˚ F @ 80 psi.

HangerSpacing

SlabApplicationsWhere Viega Barrier PEX tubing is installed horizontally in slab applications, the tubing shall be fastened every 2 feet and 3 times at each U-turn.

HydronicPipingApplicationsWhere Viega Barrier PEX tubing is used for fluid transfer piping outside of a slab, the tubing shall be fastened horizontally at intervals of 32" and vertically at intervals of 48".

FastenerMakeupIn situations where the fastener will attach directly to the tubing, plastic or plastic coated fasteners that allow the tubing to move slightly as it expands and contracts shall be used.

These are manufacturers suggestions, local code should be followed in areas where something different is specified.

The fitting wrap will bond within two minutes and create a permanent bond within 24 hours. The concrete

pour will not affect the sealant’s bonding process.

Coupling repair wrap (tape) is a self sealing, silicone based product designed to protect PureFlow Press fittings from the corrosive nature of concrete. After making an in-slab fitting connection, protect the fitting with fitting wrap prior to embedding it in concrete.

1 Press fitting as per Viega’s PureFlow Press Product Instructions.

2 If using a fitting with removable tool locator rings, remove them, otherwise they will remain in place.

3 Leave the protective film in place as you measure the amount of tape required to completely wrap and seal the fitting.

4 Measure by completely covering the fitting with tape. Overlap each row by ½" and run the wrap out over the end of the fitting and onto the tubing by 1" minimum.

5 Cut required length of tape.6 Carefully wrap fitting with tape, removing

protective film as fitting is wrapped. 7 Ensure that the fitting is completely covered.

Wi-Fi Snow Melt Control

28 of 45SM-HC 0621 Snow Melt Systems

18 Wi-Fi Snow Melt Control

DescriptionThe Wi-Fi Snow Melt Control operates hydronic heating equipment designed to melt snow and/or ice from roads and walkway surfaces. The control works with the Snow/Ice Sensor or Aerial Snow Sensor to automatically detect snow or ice and operates a single boiler or steam valve to supply heat to the slab. Boiler return protection is provided to non-condensing boilers using a mixing valve or variable speed injection mixing pump. The tekmar Connect mobile app allows for remote operation and monitoring of the snow melting system from anywhere in the world.

DedicatedBoiler

DescriptionThe Wi-Fi Snow Melt Control can operate a boiler that is dedicated to the snow melting system. The system is piped in primary-secondary to allow constant flow rates through the low-mass boiler and filled with glycol to prevent freezing.

The system pump operates continuously when heating the slab during storm/idling/melting operation.

The boiler pump cycles on and off together with the boiler.

The slab temperature is controlled by modulating the boiler firing rate or cycling the boiler on and off.

The slab target is determined by the storm/idling/melting setpoint and by the measured outdoor air temperature.

Optional slab protection limits the temperature differential between the boiler supply and slab.

The system operation is dependent on sensor selection, as listed in the table below.

SharedBoilerandHeatExchanger

DescriptionThe Wi-Fi Snow Melt Control can operate a snow melting zone from a heat source that is shared with other loads in a building. A heat exchanger isolates the glycol-filled snow melting system loop from the water-filled main heating system.

The system pump operates continuously when heating the slab during storm/idling/melting operation.

The slab temperature is controlled by cycling the heat exchanger pump and the boiler enable on and off.

The slab target is determined by the storm/idling/melting setpoint and by the measured outdoor air temperature.

A normally-closed aquastat protects the heat exchanger from freezing by shutting off power to the system pump.

The system operation is dependent on sensor selection, as listed in the table below.

Wi-Fi Snow Melt Control

39 of 45SM-HC 0621 Snow Melt Systems

The control shall communicate with the Internet to provide remote starting, stopping and monitoring through an Android, Apple iOS mobile app, or through a web browser.

The control shall have the ability to use a snow/ice sensor in order to automatically detect snow or ice and begin operation of the system. The system shall continue to run until the sensor is dry or the control is manually stopped.

The control shall communicate with an Internet weather service to determine the local snow fall forecast and automatically pre-heat the slab for an adjustable timed duration.

The control shall have the ability to be manually started with an adjustable running time that counts down and automatically stops the system.

The control shall not operate the system to provide heat to the snow melting zones when it enters into either a Warm Weather Shut Down (WWSD) or a Cold Weather Cut Off (CWCO) mode.

The system water temperature shall be based on the outdoor temperature and feedback from sensors located in the snow melting slabs.

The control shall have the option to mix the supply water temperature using a mixing valve with a floating action, 0-10 V (dc) or a 4-20 mA actuator motor, or using a variable-speed injection mixing pump.

The control shall have an adjustable minimum return water temperature setting to help prevent condensation of flue gases and subsequent corrosion and blockage of the boiler’s heat exchanger and chimney.

The control shall have the ability to limit the amount of cool water being returned to the boiler through the mixing device in order to prevent low boiler operating temperatures and flue gas condensation.

The control shall have the ability to directly control the supply temperature of a modulating boiler, a one or two-stage boiler, or to send a boiler enable signal to another boiler operating control to allow for a staging control to be connected.

The control shall have the option of an automatic differential calculation for the operation of one or two boiler stages in order to prevent short cycling.

The control shall use proportional, integral and derivative (PID) logic when modulating or staging boiler stages.

The control shall have the option to limit the heat up rate of the slab to help prevent cracking the concrete.

The control shall have two separate lockable access levels to limit the number of adjustments available to various users.

The control shall have a manual override that allows each output to be manually turned on or off.

The control shall continuously monitor its temperature sensors and provide an error message upon a control or sensor failure.

The control shall record and display boiler and pump running hours and minimum and maximum temperatures depending on the access level that has been selected.

During extended periods of inactivity, the pumps and valves that are operated by the control shall be periodically exercised to prevent seizure during long idle periods.
