A Peaceful Place
Part 1: The Island
Chapter 1: Ken
Ken sits in a room. It’s pitch black, no lights. He has no
idea what is going on or what’s happening. This is the day
his life is going to change forever.
[20 Minutes Earlier]
“Are you ready for this?”
“Yes. Yes I am.”
Ken and his wife are going sky diving. This is their third
time, but their first time going alone.
“Jump!” Ken yells.
Dianne and Ken jump. They free fall for about twenty
seconds and then they deploy their chutes.
“This is fun, eh?” Dianne yells.
“It’s fun every time!” Ken yells back.
They touch down on the ground. As soon as they do,
though, everything changes.
“Get down!” Someone yells. “Get down now!”
Ken dives down behind a crate. He can’t see Dianne. Next
thing he knows he blacks out.
Chapter 2: Dan
Dan sits in a room watching a man named Ken through a
camera. They invaded his island. They trespassed. He
knows what to do. The woman ran away. But he doesn’t
care. She can die for all he cares.
“Sir, the man is awake.” His partner, Mike, tells him.
“Let me go in.”
Dan opens the door and turns on the lights. He pulls out a
chair across from Ken and sits down.
“Who’s there?!” Ken yells.
Dan takes off Ken’s blindfold.
“Me.”
“Who are you?”
“My name is Dan. You are on my island. My island.”
“I was told this was deserted!”
“Well. It’s not.”
Dan leaves the room.
“Any signs of the resistance?” Dan asks Mike.
“No.” He replies.
“Good. If you need me, I’ll be in my room.”
Chapter 3: Dianne
This is insane. This man took Ken! I don’t know what to
do! Thinks Dianne.
Dianne is walking through the jungle. There are sounds
and noises she can’t even comprehend.
As she walks through the jungle she comes across a small
hut.
Oh my God! Shelter!
She slowly opens the door.
“Hello? Is anyone home?”
No answer.
“I’m comin’ in!”
In the center of the hut there’s a small, wooden table with
two chairs and two beds by the wall.
I wonder if somebody lives here.
She goes and looks through the cabinets. Nothing.
Dianne goes over to the bed. She lays down and slowly
falls asleep.
Chapter 4: Ken
“I’M GONNA KILL YOU! I WILL! WHERE’S DIANNE?!?!”
“Relax, Ken, relax. She’s gone. She ran away. She’s not
dead, not yet.”
“How do you know my name?”
The man throws Ken’s wallet on the table.
“This.”
This man must know all about me then!
“What do you want from me?”
“I want you to suffer. You spoiled, rich American!”
“How do you-“
“I know all about you. Your family, friends… Children.”
The man gets up and leaves the room.
Ken looks around. The keys to his cuffs are on the table.
He gets out of the chair and grabs the keys. He unlocks
his cuffs.
He goes towards the door and turns the knob. Locked.
Now what?
He looks around the room. There’s a vent in the corner.
No. I’m too small.
The door’s handle jiggles. Ken rushes to the door. The
door opens and Ken punches the man in the jaw, grabs
his gun, and runs.
Chapter 5: Dan
“He what?!”
“He escaped, boss.”
Dan takes out his pistol.
“Find him! Find him NOW!”
Dan goes into his room. He swipes everything off his
table.
Wait. If I get the girl, he thinks. He’ll have to come to me.
He picks up his radio.
“Mike! Forget Ken! Find the girl.”
“Copy that, boss.”
Part 2: Finding
Chapter 6: Dianne
Dianne wakes up to the sight of a man sitting at a table.
Knife in hand.
“Hello?” Dianne says.
“Ah! You’re awake! Come, come. I have food.” The man
says.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Raul. Raul Schmit. I found you in my house.
“I didn’t mean to-“
“It’s fine, really. Here,” He hands her a bowl of soup. “It’s
deer soup. Very healthy, and very good.”
She takes a bite. “That’s pretty good.”
“Told ya’.”
She gets up and looks out the window.
The wind blows against the leaves of the light green
leaves. There’s a man with binoculars in the tress. The
sand blows ac-
There’s a man in the tress with binoculars!
Chapter 7: Scout
“Boss, I see the woman.”
“Then get her!”
He gets down and heads towards the door. Only to hear
the click of a gun.
“And you are?” Says a woman’s voice.
He slowly turns around. It’s the woman they’re looking
for!
“My name is… Chase. It’s Chase.”
“Hello, Chase… Goodbye, Chase.”
He feels a sharp pain in his leg. He blacks out.
Chapter 8: Ken
Ken runs to the garage. He gets into a car.
The keys are in the ignition. Good.
He turns the keys. It starts and he drives off.
…
Ken finds himself at an abandoned house. The wood is
rotting and the windows are broken. But it’s shelter.
As he sits down in a chair he hears a creak in the floor
above. He pulls out a knife and walks upstairs.
As he turns a corner he sees a door door. He can hear
footsteps behind the door.
He opens the door and rushes in. Nothing.
How is this possible?
Just then he feels a sharp pain in his back. Not a knife,
but a blunt object.
“You dare trespass on our land? You’re going to pay the
price.”
“Wait! I’m not here to cause any trouble! I just wanna
find my wife and get out of here.”
He opens his eyes and sees a woman. She has black hair,
brown eyes, and is dressed in a red jacket and blue jeans.
“You say you’re not here to cause trouble? Then prove it
to me.”
“I wish to go after a man named Dan. Do you know him?”
She’s silent for a moment. “Yes. This man is very… For
lack of a better word, evil. He murders everyone who
does not aid him.”
“He took my wife. Do you know where I can find him?”
This time she’s silent for a long time. “No, but I know
someone who can.”
Chapter 9: Dan
“Where is the girl?” Dan asks.
“She uhhh… She shot me in the leg. I didn’t get her.”
“I see. And you think everything is fine? Do you? Well it’s
not, Chase. It’s not.”
“I know, sir.”
“Don’t lie to me! If you knew this wasn’t okay then why
did come back? I said, if I remember correctly, ‘Do not
come back without her’… Didn’t I say that?”
“Yes, sir.”
“THEN WHY DID YOU COME BACK?!?!”
“I don’t know, sir.”
“That’s fine. That’s fine, really.”
Dan pulls out his gun. “I am giving one more chance,” He
pulls out the clip and pulls out a bullet. “Or this bullet is
going RIGHT through that thick skull of yours. Got that?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Good… NOW LEAVE!”
Chapter 10: Dianne
“The man that you shot,” Raul asks. “Did you kill him?”
“No.”
“Why not? He’s gonna come back,”
“And I’ll do the same thing. ‘Cuz I know Dan will mess him
up.”
“Ah, I see.”
“Well I have to go.”
“What? Why?”
“I have to find my husband.”
…
“This is as far as I go.” Raul says.
“Thanks. I’ll be back.”
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
“I’m not.”
Chapter 11: Karla
I think I can trust this man. He seems nice. But I must
keep my guard up.
“So, what are you doing out here?” Ken asks.
“I’m just out here to enjoy the land. This place is
beautiful.”
“That it is.”
They walk along a trail in the jungle. There are a few
animals here and there but nothing bothers them.
“Do you hunt?” Ken asks,
“Yes. Do you hunt?”
“I’ve done it before. I hunted deer.”
“Ha! Deer? I’ve hunted komodo dragons and jaguars!
Amateur.”
“They don’t have those in the U.S.”
“I live the hunt. I love it.”
“Well, I don’t have time. I need to find my wife.”
“I’m sure she’s fine.”
Chapter 12: Chase
Find the girl, come back. Don’t find the girl, don’t come
back.
Chase is climbing through the trees looking for the
woman. He always uses the trees, there are dangerous
creatures below.
He comes to a clearing.
I ain’t goin’ out there. Too exposed.
He decides to go around.
“Chase, have you got her yet?” It’s Dan over the radio.
“No, sir. But I think I see her.” He lied.
“Then get her! Or this bullet is gonna be- I’ll be right
back.”
Chase goes around the clearing. He encounters a few
animals here and there. There’s… a smell in the air. What
is it though?
“I’m back. Have you found her?”
“I think.”
“Then go get her!”
The radio went static.
I think I’ll go investigate that smell.
He heads towards the smell. It’s the smell of cooking
meat. He comes to a small hut; the same hut he saw
before.
Chapter 13: Karla
“We’re almost there. Don’t worry.” Karla says.
“Where are we going?”
“To a place. There are only two other people on this
island who hate Dan. That’s not good enough to take on
his army, but enough to get in, kill Dan, get your wife,
and get out.”
“I can’t thank you enough for helping me.”
“Think nothing of it.”
They come up to a cave. “Here we are.”
They walk into the cave. They walk for 5, 10, 15 minutes
until they come to a clearing the cave.
There’s a flat area with a small creek and a waterfall
coming from the opening at the top. There’s moss on the
rocks and bugs in the air.
“This place is beautiful.” Ken says.
“It is.” Karla replies.
“Karla! Long time no see! And who’s this?” Says a man in
a white tank top and ripped shorts.
“This is Ken. His wife was lost during an attack by Dan.
I’m helping him get his wife back.”
Another man comes up.
“I’m Todd, Todd Tenard. I understand you need help. I
will. This other guy here,” He points to the other man. “Is
Cameron. Everyone calls him Cam, though.”
“Nice to meet you both.”
“Likewise.” Says Todd. “But can we get started on this
search tomorrow? I’d like to get the proper rest.”
“Sure.” Ken says. “Just don’t wait too long.”
“Alright. I’m goin’ to bed. You comin’, Todd?” Cam asks.
“Yeah.” They both walk away.
Karla looks at Ken.
This man has been through a lot. I-
”I think I’ll head to bed too. Could use some rest.”
“Yeah… Sure.” Karla smiles.
Chapter 14: Dianne
Dianne opens the door and walks
outside. There’s silence. She takes in the beauty of it all. The wind blowing, the birds chirping, and the water flowing. She turns around and is confronted by the same man who tried to kill her the day before.“You.” Dianne pulls out her sidearm. “What do you
want?”
The man pulls out his knife. “You.”
He charges, but will not succeed. Dianne points her pistol
at his leg and fires, but it’s jammed.
The man puts his knife up to her neck. “Now, we can do
this the easy way, or the hard way. Either way, I’m fine.”
Dianne thinks for a moment. She runs scenarios through
her heads and only sees on that could work.
“Fine.”
Just then Raul comes outside. “Dianne are y-“
The man shoots Raul in the chest and injects Dianne with
some sort of substance. She falls asleep.
…
When she comes to she can see nothing. She tastes a
metallic taste. She can barely make out the silhouette of
a figure across the table.
“Sorry for the inconvenience, but it had to be done.”
She can finally make out the figure. She can only think of
one person as who it could be.
“Dan.” Her body fills anger and hatred.
“Nice to finally meet you, sweetie. You’ve been out for
quite a while.”
The man that shot her walks in. “This is Chase.” Dan
says. “He helped in… “Catching” you.”
Dianne wiggles her wrists.
“There’s no use trying to escape. Your husband managed
to, but that doesn’t mean I’ll make the same mistake.”
“You’re a monster.” Dianne says.
“Oh, am I? I was just sittin’ here on my own little island. I
was just minding own business… then you show up. YOU
SHOWED UP! Calm, calm, calm down. Dan. Calm, down.”
“You’ve lost your mind.”
“I know I have. Let me tell you what I’m gonna do.” He
gets out of the chair and kneels next to Dianne. “I’m
gonna send a missile to America. Have you seen those
movies where zombies roam the streets? Yes? Well,
that’s exactly what’s not gonna happen.
That stuff is fiction. No, I’m gonna send a missile over
there to kill everyone. Or you can get your husband here
and have him die for his country. What will it be? Have
your husband die for his country? Or kill millions of
people?”
He stands up and goes to Chase. “Chase here is gonna
keep you company. Bye, bye.”
Dan leaves the room and Chase walks over with a
machete.
He whispers. “Let me get you out of here.”
He cuts her loose.
This must be trap. She thinks.
She grabs the machete and cuts his arm off.
“Aghhhh!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!”
She turns to look at him. “Leaving.”
Chapter 15: Ken
Ken looks around the room. It’s his room. He’s confused
but relieved.
It was all a dream. He tells himself.
His wife, Dianne, walks into the room.
“Good morning, Ken. I made you breakfast.”
A puzzled look swipes across his face. “What are you
doing? We’re in danger.”
“We’re not in danger. We’re safe here.”
Ken thinks for a moment.
“Ken, wake up it’s time to go.” Dianne says. “Wake up.”
“What?”
“Ken, I said wake up! Ken! Ken, wake up!”
Ken’s eyes open and he bolts upright. “What?! What’s
going on?!”
“It’s time to go.”
“Okay let’s do it.”
Part 3: The Attack
Chapter 16: Dan
“So let me get this straight.” Dan says angrily. “You cut
her loose and she chops your arm off? Is that it? Yes?”
“Yes.”
Dan walks over to Chase and leans down to his face. “I
promised you pain, Chase. That’s what I did. Now you’re
gonna get it.”
Dan walks over to a cabinet and opens it. Inside there is a
collection of knives. He picks one out and goes over to
Chase.
“Do you see this knife, Chase? This is a very good knife.
It’s a Spyderco Persistence. I quite like it. I have better,
but I’ve had this since I was a child.”
Dan flips the knife open. “You let that woman escape,
Chase. Why?”
“She cut my arm off! What could of I done?”
“You could have NOT cut her loose! YOU COULD HAVE
NOT CUT HER LOOSE!!!” Dan yells.
Dan rubs his temples. “I’m gonna try to calm down,
Chase.”
Dan takes the knife and drove the knife into Chase’s wrist
right through the bone.
“Aghhh… Please, Dan! PLEASE!”
“You had your chance, Chase. You had it.” Dan pulls out
his gun. “And remember when I said I would drive this
bullet right through your THICK skull? Remember that,
eh?”
Chase stays silent.
“You’re supposed to say ‘Yes, Dan. I understand.’”
Chase says it.
“Good. Good, Chase, good. Now, Chase.” Dan points the
gun at Chase.
“Please, Dan! Have mercy!”
Dan pulls the trigger and Chase flies back.
“Get the body.” Dan says.
Two men come in to get Dan.
“And get me that girl.”
Chapter 17: Dianne
Dianne runs around a corner and bolts down the hallway.
She kills two guard along the way. She has no idea where
she is but she makes it to the garage.
She hears a shot.
That must be Chase.
She goes and looks for a vehicle. She hears the click of a
gun.
“Stand down.” A man says. “Or I WILL kill you.”
She turns around to see three men aiming at her.
“Get down on th-“
A hole is blown through the wall and three men and a
woman run through.
Who she sees is beyond her belief.
Chapter 18: Ken
Ken, Cam, Todd, and Karla ride across the land in a jeep.
“So we go in, get Dianne, kill Dan, and get out?” Ken
asks.
“Yeah,” says Cam. “That about sums it up!”
They continue to drive along the road. They come across
a man in the road who appears to be injured.
“Help me, please! I need help!” He yells.
“Are we gonna help him?!” Ken asks.
“Oh he ain’t even hurt.” Cam says.
He rams on the peddle and speeds forward. The man
pulls out a pistol and yells “It’s didn’t work!”
A bunch of guys come out of hiding, guns blazing. Cam
drives through the ambush and keeps on driving. Karla
grabs an RPG and shoots back at them.
We continue to drive.
…
We get to a building.
“This is Dan’s base of operation. Your wife should be
being held here.”
I… I don’t know if I even wanna rescue my wife. This
woman… Karla… She is much livelier.
“Ken! Ken, are you ready?” Karla asks.
“What? Oh… Yeah, I am.”
“This here,” Todd says. “Is where the garage is. There are
tons of vehicles in here.”
“We can sneak,” Cam says. “Or we can blow a hole in this
wa-“
“Blow it up.” Ken says.
Cam and Todd place C4 charges on the wall. Todd hands
Ken the detonator.
“I’ll let you do the honors.”
Ken takes the detonator. “Stand back.”
They all take steps back. Ken pushes the button and a
hole in the wall appears with dust and debris on the floor.
Part 4: Capture
Chapter 19: Ken/Dianne
[Ken]
Ken rushes through the hole in the wall and looks around.
The only person he can see is…
“Dianne! Oh my God…”
“Ken!”
Ken rushes to Dianne and…
[Dianne]
A man yells. “STOP! DO NOT MAKE A MOVE!”
Ken stops.
We are dead…
Dianne turns around. It’s Dan.
“You think you can just come in here and… and blow a
hole in my wall?? Huh? Drop your weapons… Drop ‘em.”
Ken drops his gun. “Don’t hurt her…”
Dan goes over to Ken and grabs him by the neck.
“Nobody orders me to do anything… But I’m not that
low.”
Two men come over and cuff Ken.
“Buh-bye.” Dan says.
And they drag him away.
“Now…” Dan says. “What do I do with you?”
Chapter 20: Dan
Dan is in his room looking through his weapons. Mike
walks in.
“Sir, what do we do with Ken?”
Dan turns around and looks Mike in the eyes. “We kill
him.”
…
Dan ties Ken’s arm to the post for the last time. “Now
stay.” He says.
Dan pulls out his gun and says to the crowd. “Let today
be the day known as the day Ken Ward almost escaped
my island! He killed many of my men, but he will no
longer!”
“Nooooo!” Dianne yells.
“Goodbye, Ken.”
Dan pulls the trigger… but nothing happens.
No! The gun’s jammed!
Karla knocks down a guard and grabs his weapon and
fires into the crowd.
“Get her!” Dan orders.
She shoots off Ken’s restraints with precision and he’s
free. Dan turns around and…
“Hello, Dan.” He gets one in the jaw.
Dan is knocked out cold.
…
When Dan comes to he realizes he has lost.
“Glad you’re awake, Dan.” It’s Dianne.
“What are you doing?”
“Blowing up your island,” Ken says. “It should be a pretty
explosion.”
“What?!?!”
“Yup. Goodbye, Dan.”
Dan looks around the room and sees there are explosives
everywhere.
“May you rest in pieces.”
Part 3: Departure
Chapter 21: Island
Ken walks out to the plane.
“Are you ready to leave?” Ken asks.
“Yes, I am.” Dianne replies.
“Good, let’s go.”
They both walk into the plane and Cam starts the engine.
Ken hands Dianne the detonator. “You can do the
honors.”
She presses the button and Dan’s safe house is blown to
smithereens.
“It’s over.” He says. “It’s over…”
Meanwhile four miles away, there is man walking along
the beach, watching as the group leaves the island.
“Let today be the day known as the day Ken and Dianne
almost escaped Dan’s wrath.”
The End
