SOA DEDICATES FOUNDATION DAY TO ODISHA’S LAND, HERITAGE AND CULTURE

The Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University (SOA) observed its 13th

Foundation Day on July 17 by announcing its decision to establish a centre which would work for restoration, preservation and propagation of Odisha’s rich heritage and culture.

“The new centre will be known as the SOA Centre for Restoration, Preservation and Prop-agation of Heritage and Culture,” SOA Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amit Banerjee said after un-furling the university flag on the occasion.

There was a need to preserve the state’s traditions and culture and promote its literary heritage, he said adding promotion and pres-ervation of ancient literature would be one of the main tasks of the new centre for which SOA would collaborate with academicians and ex-perts of repute.

Celebratory activities of all kinds on the occasion were replaced by a massive ‘Green Cover for Odisha’ drive involving SOA’s nearly 4,000 employees.

Deans, senior officials, staff members and students attended tree plantation programmes organised in different campuses during the day. “It is imperative for all of us to restore the greenery through our individual efforts in the aftermath of the destruction caused by severe cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ which wiped out a huge chunk of green cover on May 3,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

“Every employee of SOA had been re-quested to plant at least one sapling on the

Foundation Day either in the university campus or at their home or any public place and take care of the sapling to ensure that it grew into a healthy tree,” he said adding the move had received an enthusiastic response.

Planting of saplings was under-taken in the campuses housing the faculties of medical sciences, dental

sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, en-gineering, management, hospitality and tourism management, nursing, law and agricultural sciences.

SOA STAFFER DRAWS PM’S PRAISE FOR FOCUSSING ON DEVELOPMENTAL ISSUE

Clogging of the city streets and drainage problems were brought under the spotlight by

34-year-old Sitanshu Mohan Parida, an employee of the SOA Deemed to be Uni-versity here, drawing the attention of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.

The Prime Minister, in his ‘Mann ki Baat’, praised Parida for his suggestions focusing on drainage issues in cities on June 30.

“This is something which I will remember all my life as the Prime Minister took note of my suggestion and praised the same,” Mr. Parida, who works as an Assistant Adminis-trative Officer at SOA, said.

Mr. Parida, who is a management graduate, said he came across a govern-ment website from which he learnt that the

Prime Minister had invited people to share their ideas and promptly sent his suggestion without expecting that it would be taken

note of at the PM’s level.“My suggestion was that we needed more

drainage projects under the Swachh Bharat scheme because the problem was increasing in the growing cities,” he said adding he pleaded for attention to this problem which would benefit the people.

Take for example the city of Bhubaneswar, now listed as a Smart City, which has been deal-ing with serious drainage issues, he said.

“I also suggested that all cables should re-main underground, at least in states which were prone to cyclones,” Mr. Parida said referring to the devastation caused by cyclone ‘Fani’ on May 3.

The affected cities would not have re-mained dark for days had the electric cables being kept underground, he said.

EVOLVING ROLE OF HUMAN RESOURCES DISCUSSED AT CII CONCLAVE

The evolving role of Human Re-source Management required a shift from talent management

through automation, integration and en-gagement to ‘team centric productivity and work management’, Prof. Amit Ba-nerjee, Vice-Chancellor of SOA Deemed to be University, said.

“The pivotal need is to recognize the values of health and mental well being in enhancing productivity,” he said while in-augurating the ‘Human Capital Conclave’ on the theme--- ‘Disruptions and Innova-tions in HR’, organised by the Confedera-tion of Indian Industry (CII) in the SOA

campus on July 30.Prof. Banerjee stressed upon the

in human resource management systems and human capital management alongside continuous performance monitoring. There should also be thrust on feedback and ana-lytics as essential tools for human resource management while taking advantage of Artificial Intelligence based systems and virtual reality based micro-learning and corporate learning platforms, he said.

The event brought together around 150 professionals from the industry on a common platform providing them the opportunity to exchange views and experiences even as waves of change transformed global busi-ness leading to the need to reinvent HR practices for the digital era.

Mr. Ranjan Kumar Mohapatra, Chair-man of CII Odisha State Council and Di-rector (HR) of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (OICL), said the HR professionals had to adapt to the changing times.

The conclave was more about identify-ing problems in the field of HR and asking probing questions, he said adding the myths surrounding HR needed to be busted. “The perception of HR is moving from being a purely qualitative domain to an analytical one,” he said.

The first panel discussion was on ‘Tech-nological Disruption and Organisational Communication’ with Mr. Imdad Ali, Chief, HRM at Tata Steel, Kalinga Nagar, Ms. Usha Singh, Director (HR) at Manganese Ore India Ltd, Mr. Satish Mohapatra, Vice-President, Siemens India Ltd and Prof. Sa-tya Prakash Mishra, Dean, KIIT Deemed to be University, addressing the session.

The panelists focused on use of ana-lytics in real life business situations and the manner in which it helped in tackling prob-lems of recruitment renegotiations, attrition, improvement in efficacy of induction pro-grams and overall productivity.

The second panel discussion featured Mr. B.K.Thakur, Convenor, CII, Odisha HR-IR panel and Director (HR), Nalco, Ms. Rajita Kulkarni, President, Sri Sri University, Cap-tain Rajesh Kumar Roy, Vice-President (HR), JSW Utkal Steel Limited, Ms. Bobby Patnaik, HR-Business Manager at Infosys Limited, Mr. P.K.Sahu, Senior General Manager-HRM and Safety, Tata Steel Processing and Dis-tribution Limited.

The major topics of discussion included assessing happiness quotient aids, sustain-able organizations and why employee happiness was accorded high significance in present times.

EXCELLENT JOB OFFERS KEEP POURING IN FOR ITER STUDENTS

Microsoft and Amazon hav-ing completed their campus recruitment in June, students

of the Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), SOA’s faculty of engineer-ing and technology, are continuing to get excellent job offers from a plethora of com-panies.

Students have landed excellent job offers from Rapyuta Robotics, Odessa Inc, Sigmoid Analytics, Kony, Value Labs and Kloudgin during July.

All these recruiters, being into product development profile, have offered deserv-ing students attractive salary packages ranging between Rs. six lakh to Rs. 12 lakh per annum. The remarkable feature of the ongoing recruitment drive was the satisfac-

tion expressed by the recruiters over the performance of ITER students who had dis-played an excellent attitude to learn while showing sincerity and dedication. Feed-

back received from the recruiters indicated that this had encouraged these companies to recruit more number of students from

ITER compared to other institutions across the country. As of now, many students had been placed in Day-zero slot companies.

Those belonging to the 2019 graduat-ing batch had got excellent placement op-portunities in companies including Microsoft, Amazon, Reliance Industries, BOSCH, Delo-itte, IBM, CTS, Infosys, WIPRO, HighRadius, TVS Motors, MuSigma, and Tata Steel.

Students were on the verge of appear-ing at the selection process of Codenation which had an attractive package of Rs. 31 lakh per annum. “The prevailing scenario has raised expectations about the possibil-ity of Day-zero companies hiring around 500 of our students by end of August,” Dr. Sujit Kumar Dash, Head, Training and Place-ment, at ITER, said.

DOCTORS’ DAY NO LONGER AN OCCASION TO CELEBRATE: PROF BANERJEE

Doctors are an integral part of society and always endeavour to alleviate the pains and ail-

ments of people in society, but the grow-ing incidents of violence against them are worrying, Prof. Amit Banerjee, an eminent cardio-thoracic surgeon, said during the Doctors’ Day celebration on July 1.

“Some doctor somewhere in our country is subjected to violent behavior every hour which has to stop. Doctors have the right to protest against such incidents, but they must also ensure that it did not hamper health services,” Prof. Banerjee, Vice-Chancellor

of SOA Deemed to be University and chief guest at the programme, said.

The programme was organised by the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hos-pital to mark the occasion. The theme for the day this year was “Zero Tolerance to Violence Against Doctors and Clinical Es-tablishments”.

Referring to the agitation by doctors following an incident in Kolkata, Prof. Baner-jee said it was the first time that all doctors in the country took an united stand against violence against the community. “We must observe, not celebrate the day,” he said.

“Prevailing cir-cumstances have not left us in a celebra-tory mood as we re-member the pioneer-ing leadership of Dr. B.C. Roy whose birth day is observed as the ‘Doctors’ Day’, he said adding even today doctors of the

Hindu Rao Hospital and at-tached medical college in north Delhi are on strike because two of their colleagues were assaulted a day be-fore.

Prof. Banerjee suggested that the Doctors’ Day should be observed as Doctors’ Unity Day as a constant re-minder to the violence being perpetrated against them.

Interns and medical students staged two skits portraying violence against medi-cal professionals and first-aid for accident victims.

The gathering was also addressed by Prof. Gangadhar Sahu, Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital, Prof. D.K.Roy and Prof. Suresh-war Mohanty, former Deans of the institute and Prof. N.K.Debata, Head of the Infection Control Committee.

Five doctors of the hospital, Dr. Santosh Kumar Swain, Professor and Head of Depart-ment of ENT, Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Parida, Associ-ate Professor and Head of Department of Immunology, Dr. Jagadish Prasad Sahu, Asso-ciate Professor and Head of Department of Neonatology, Dr. Surendranath Swain, Associ-ate Professor, Medicine and Dr. Rashmirekha Behera, Assistant Professor, Pharmacology, were felicitated on the occasion.

90 PER CENT OF 400 MILLION PEOPLE INFECTED WITH HEPATITIS-B UNAWARE ABOUT THEIR CONDITION

Hepatitis-B, 100 times more in-fectious than HIV and one of the biggest killer diseases prowling

the earth, has been claiming a staggering 1.5 million lives worldwide every year.

“But the scariest aspect of this disease has been that though around 400 million people in the world are carrying the infec-tion, more than 90 per cent of them are unaware about it,” Dr. Manoj Kumar Sahu, Head of the Department of Gastroenterol-ogy at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, said. Advances in medical science has helped reduce mortal-

ity from diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculo-sis and malaria, but the casualty caused by

Hepatitis-B has increased by 22 per cent since 2000, he said while addressing a

programme organised to mark the World Hepatitis Day on July 28.

Speaker of the Odisha Legislative As-sembly, Mr. Surya Narayan Patro graced the programme as the chief guest which was presided over by Prof. Amit Banerjee, Vice-Chancellor of the SOA Deemed to be University.

The programme was organised in the SOA campus with hundreds of students par-ticipating many of whom were screened for Hepatitis-B and immunized against the in-fection free of cost. The students also took out a rally in the morning carrying placards to create awareness about the disease.

Dr. Sahu said there were five strains of Hepatitis (the word meaning inflammation of the liver) --- A, B,C,D and E—of which Hepatitis-B and C were the most common cause of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer in India.

“While Hepatitis-A and E were trans-mitted by ingestion of contaminated food and water, Hepatitis-B, C and D spread through contact with blood and infected body fluids,” he said adding the infection spread through receipt of contaminated blood or blood products, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment, sharing of needles for injections and blades for shaving and sexual contact.

The people, who are infected but are unaware about their condition, are at high risk of developing chronic liver disease and complications and at the same time un-

knowingly keep transmitting the infection to healthy people, Dr. Sahu said adding the theme for the World Hepatitis Day this year was “Find the Missing Millions”.

“However, the good news is that a very effective vaccine is available since 1982 which can prevent the infection,” he in-formed.

This vaccine, he said, could be admin-istered to any person of any age including pregnant women with the protection lasting a lifetime. Though there was no vaccine for Hepatitis-C, cure was available. A single tablet, if used for three months, could com-pletely cure the infection.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) aimed to eliminate Hepatitis-B by 2030, Dr. Sahu said.

Prof. Banerjee said the SOA Deemed to be University, which has been in the fore-front of the battle against Hepatitis in the state, had launched the SOA Adivasi Hepa-titis Mission (SOAAHM) three years ago in a bid to screen tribal children against the disease and immunize them.

The Vice-Chancellor also announced that the IMS and SUM Hospital, which has been extending free screening and immmu-nisation against Hepatitis-B everyday round the year for the last eight years, would en-deavour to provide free treatment to per-sons afflicted with Hepatitis-C.

Lauding SOA for taking up the battle against Hepatitis-B, Mr. Patro said that the programme should spread in the tribal belts

as the incidence of the disease was high in those areas. “The entire state is before you, take every step to create awareness among the people,” he said while pointing out that people still depended on quacks for cure in the interior areas.

Prof. Banerjee said that any person who had undergone blood transfusion for any reason should undergo screening for Hepatitis-B.

Dr. Pushparaj Samantasinhar, Medi-cal Superintendent of SUM Hospital, Dr. Ajay Kumar Jena, Additional Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital, Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Das, Dean (Students’ Welfare) and Dr. Jimmy Narayan, Associate Professor in the De-partment of Gastroenterology at IMS and SUM Hospital also spoke. A play was also staged on the occasion to create awareness about Hepatitis.
