In a democratic government, people have the right to take part in government. Democracy as a form of government however, is quite different from the one that existed many years ago. While in some countries (like Greece) the states were small enough to be governed by people directly, in some countries leaders had to be elected. These elected leaders governed the people.

The Chola Kingdom in the south is considered to be the longest ruling dynasty in the Tamil region. The Chola rulers were great builders and built grand temples. They were also efficient administrators. The kingdom was divided into provinces and villages. However, after the death of powerful Chola kings, the empire became weak and eventually declined.
