In this region the sour gas production activity is driven bythe demand for gas which is projected to double overthe coming years in order to meet the power andinfrastructure requirements.
Subsequently the UAE, in particular, is becoming thecentre of international sour gas conditioning and despiteoil price fluctuations sees no serious downturn intechnical activity.
For example the Habshan V plant, which is part of AbuDhabiʼs Integrated Gas Development, is currentlyprocessing 1 billion cubic feed/day (bcf/d) and the aim is
for processed gas to rise to 1.75 bcf/d by 2017. Also theShah sour gas field, with an H2S content of 23% and 10%CO2, is targeting production of 540 million scf/d of salesgas, requiring it to process almost 1 bcf/d of gas and isexpected to be operating at full capacity by year end.
The level of interest in the Bab project is currently veryhigh and this field presents huge and complex technicalchallenges with the CO2 content in the Feedgas atapproximately 10%, and the H2S content varying from30‒40%. Targeted production is just over 500 millionscf/d of sales gas.
Hail is another potential sour gas project in Abu Dhabi, currently at the feasibility study phase. It is expected toproduce 400-600 million scf/d of sales gas. The H2Scontent of this offshore field is 15%, which is lower thanthe onshore fields, but the offshore location, albeit inshallow water, may increase production costs. TheShuwaihat field is also creating strong interest andreserves are estimated between 28 to 85 bcm.
The North Field is the largest gas field in the world at1500 tcf and straddles Iran and Qatar. South Pars is onthe Iranian side and in spite of delays caused byinternational sanctions, Iran has been steadily
progressing through the 29 project phases, all of whichinvolve gas and condensate recovery.
On the Qatari side of the North Field, gas is broughtashore to the massive complex at Ras Laffan. Gasproduction will rise to 2.2 million t/a by 2018 as more gasis processed. The new Barzan gas project, designed toprovide gas for domestic use, is now in start-up, with
Train 1 commissioned and Train 2 due to start up laterthis year. Total sales gas output at capacity will be1.4 bcf/d.
In neighbouring KSA, Karan is the first non-associatedsour gas development. The gas is produced offshore andpumped for processing onshore at the existingKursaniyah gas plant.

Shah Gas Plant, May 2014
Additionally the Wasit gas plant has been built to processgas from the offshore Arabiyah and Hasbah sour non-associated gas fields. Total gas processing capacity is 2.6billion scf/d to produce 1.75 billion scf/d of sales gas. H2Scontent averages 4-8%, and the sulphur recovery sectionincludes four SRUs with a total capacity of 2,400 t/d (800,000t/a). Start-up is due to begin this year with full productionby 2016. Fadhill is another sour gas processing plant, designed to process additional gas from the Kursaniyah andHasbah sour gas fields. Target production has beenincreased to 2.5 billion scf/d, with start-up scheduled forlate 2018. The plant is currently in its design phase.
Oman has two major sour gas processing projects. One is atYibal Khuff Sudair and is a deep oil and associated sour gasdeposit beneath an existing field, with an H2S content of 3%. An 85,000 t/a sulphur recovery plant is due forcompletion this year, and commissioning of the gas projectis expected in 2019. The other project is the Rabab HarweelIntegrated Project.
Internationally other sour gas exploration activities areongoing in Central Asia, particularly in Turkmenistan. Thelong awaited Kashagan project in Kazakhstan is expectedto restart production in 2017 once gas leaks from the sour
gas pipelines are finally eradicated. Also sour gas activitiesin China are ongoing in the Yuanba and Chuandongbei GasFields and the Gorgon and Janz-I0 Gas Fields off the coastin Western Australia with their reserves of 40 tcf areexpected to produce 15.6 tons/year of LNG.
The technologies involved in sour field management andproduction are always progressing and the latestdevelopments across the whole management spectrumwill be included in the SOGAT Conference Programme. Also within this programme, the well known coverage of technical developments with papers from Operators will beencouraged as ever. As usual practical Workshops on
topical issues in these areas will be presented in the first twodays of SOGAT 2016 and the International AdvisoryCommittee are planning workshops on: Sulphur Recoveryand Management, Operating issues with Lean Acid Gas andBTX, Uses of Specialised Solvents in AGE and other newworkshop topics currently under review. More will beavailable at www.sogat.org.
A feature for 2016 will be the repeat of the Technical Tourof the Habshan V Plant.
The SOGAT Exhibition will see the worldʼs leading vendorsand suppliers returning again and so SOGAT 2016 willcontinue its well known trend and reputation, as theinternational event that provides a one stop review of allthe latest developments in Global Sour HydrocarbonManagement.
