To be crucified at the hands of the Romans was a very clear sign that your revolution had been a failure. So Paul preached about a Messiah who some would see as a curse, others would see him as a failure, and yet he had the audacity to call him “Lord.” The resurrection which we celebrate at Easter is the sign of God that Jesus was crucified to bear the curse we deserved and triumphed at the very moment it looked as if he had failed.

“26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and des-pised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemp-tion, 31 so that, as it is written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.’ ”

Easter and April Fools are both for fools, but

for different kinds. April Fool’s Day is for the gullible

while Easter is for the culpable. Those who fall for

pranks on April 1st will be labeled “Gullible” and hilar-

iously so. Those who find Christ accept the label

“Culpable” knowing their responsibility for their sin,

while knowing that Christ paid the price, taking our

sin upon himself.

“Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” - 1 Cor. 1:20b

When I think of the fact that this year Easter falls on April Fool’s Day I think of no more perfect reminder than in the first letter to the Corinthians. How perfect to talk about fools around Easter. I’m not being sarcastic or speaking tongue in cheek. Paul says in the verses just be-fore the quote above:

“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’ ”

In our day the cross looks very different. It has been so often plated with gold, decorated with jewels, treated as jewelry that we seldom recognize it as it is. If a cross were on display in a museum it would not be in the section of priceless artifacts or early tools. The cross belongs in the room of torture alongside the racks and the guillotine. Look at instruments of torture and develop a faith around it? I wouldn’t recommend it. But God doesn’t take my recommendations very often.

“...23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

Paul speaks of the cross being “a stumbling block to Jews” and how could it not? Paul highlights in another letter that the Old Testament law pronounced a curse on anyone who was hung on a tree (Gal. 3:13). The cross was a curse and an understandable stumbling block. Paul speaks of the cross, of Christ crucified, as being “folly to

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

Easter Sunday is on April 1st and that's no fooling. What a glorious way to begin the month of April! This year's Community Sunrise Service will be held at Fairview Baptist Church at 6:30a.m. It's a great opportunity to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ with our broth-

ers and sisters in Christ from the LaCenter area. Don't miss it.

And, if you haven't already, now is a great time to begin our 2018 Bible reading plan. We're finishing the book of Numbers and will spend March reading Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth and beginning 1 Samuel. Don't be intimidated by the Old Testament. You will be surprised to discover how it's tied to the New Testament. A copy of the reading plan (usually only 2 to 3 chapters a day) is located in the vestibule or can be found online

at lacenterchristianchurch.org.

Please circle on your calendar the important date of March 29th. Our Maundy Thursday Service will be held that evening at 7:00p.m. This moving service celebrates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples. It also prepares our hearts and minds for the betrayal and crucifixion of our Lord and Savior who died as a sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins. You are encouraged to reach out and bring a guest to this special service.

EASTER EGG HUNT

Join us this Saturday, March 31st for the annual City of LaCenter Easter Egg Hunt. You're welcome to help hide eggs in the city park at 10:00am. The egg hunt is at Noon, then immediately following (approx. 12:15pm) our church is hosting a reception for participants and their families in the Fellowship Hall. It will be a great time to meet and greet Lacenter folks. If you're unable to attend but would like to help, please bring a dessert to the Fellowship Hall before Noon on Saturday.
