The 1,500 people who had to be evacuated from the FIB campsite at the Benicssim music festival because of gale force winds in the early hours of Saturday returned to the site in the evening. The campers were given access to a local sports centre as many saw their tents blow away in the Vendaval winds which reached 75 kilometres per hour at times. 24 people needed treatment from the Red Cross but were not seriously hurt. A fire close to the festival site also blew smoke over the performance of Tom Tom Club, and the fire service had to be called.

Those who bought a day ticket for Friday were fully refunded. The festival included performances from Franz Ferdinand, together with 2 Many DJs, Elbow, Josele Santiago, Laurent Garnier, The Killers, White Lies, among others

    Add AA To Your

Mobile Phone Contact List British residents will consider

that the AA is Alcoholics Anonymous, or perhaps remember the Automobile Association, but now in Spain the Interior Ministry has started a campaign for residents of Spain to add a new contact AA to their mobile phones.

The AA here is Avisar a, meaning Who to contact, and is the name of a new campaign presented by the Ministry in conjunction with the Spanish Red Cross.

The idea is that you add AA to your mobile phone contact list and then add the number of the person to contact should you suffer an accident.

President of the Cruz Roja, Juan Manuel Surez de Toro, described it as a very good idea, and said that it would be extremely useful for them and a guarantee that anyone who has suffered an accident has a friendly face nearby quickly.

High Speed Link Madrid-Valencia By End Of 2010

The AVE high speed train link between Madrid and Valencia will be operational at the end of next year, when the journey will be completed in one hour and 35 minutes. The announcement came from Development Minister, Jos Blanco, and the Valencia President, Francisco Camps, who held a joint press conference following a meeting in Madrid last Tuesday.

The Ministry is investing almost 4.5 billion in the project over this year and next, and the work will include gauge-changing installations to allow the AVE service to connect with Alicante and Castelln, also reducing the journey time from both cities to the Spanish capital.

Another subject under discussion was 700 million investment in Valencia and Alicante airports up until 2012.

160m Euro Loan To Complete Murcia Airport

The company which has the concession to run Murcia Airport, Aeropuerto de la Regin de Murcia S.A. (AEROMUR), is reported to be negotiating a 160 million loan with a group of banks so that development work can be completed.

80 million has already been spent at the site, and Cajamurcia and CAM have granted a temporary credit while the main deal is found, and the company is confident that despite a recent slowdown in construction activity, the airport completion date will be maintained.

Director, Mariano Menor, said that the passenger terminal and control tower are now underway

Spain, the Czech Republic, and Holland have been invited to the next G20 summit meeting in Pittsburgh, even though they are not official members of the group.

The invitation for Spain is being seen as a sign of the friendship developing between Jos Luis Rodrguez Zapatero and Barack Obama, although it follows a formal request

for attendance made by the Minister for Tax and the Economy, Elena Salgado back in April.

Spain took part in the last two G-20 summits in Washington and London and will now be in Pittsburgh on September 24 and 25. The confirmation of their attendance came in a statement from the White House

Spains Health Ministry has confirmed the third death from the A(H1N1) virus reported as a 33 year old woman from Nigeria who died in hospital on Thursday afternoon in Palma de Mallorca. She is understood to have been admitted on Wednesday with symptoms of pneumonia. No further details on her identity have been released to the press as yet.

A further victim, a 71 year old man who died in the La Paz Hospital in Madrid was also confirmed. He was suffering from a lung illness, complicated by infection by the A(H1N1) virus.

The body of the premature baby born to Spains first victim of the virus arrived in Morocco on Thursday morning, for baby Rayan to be buried alongside his mother, Dalilah Mimouni, who died from the virus at the end of June. His body arrived on a flight from the Getafe military base in Madrid, chartered for the family by King Mohamed VI of Morocco, and was then buried with a short graveside ceremony at the cemetery in his mothers home town of Mdiq. Born at 7 months old by Caesarean

section only hours before his mothers death, Rayan died from a dreadful medical error this Monday, after he was mistakenly fed baby formula intravenously instead of through a tube to his stomach.

Baby Rayans father has said he plans to take action against the Gregorio Maran Hospital in Madrid where both his wife and baby son died. Its understood the court in charge of the investigation into Rayans death now has the first details of the autopsy results, while lawyers representing the nurse who made the error which cost him his life say systems should have been in place to lessen the risk of such dreadful mistakes. They also argue, Telecinco reports, that she should not have been left alone on her first day of working in the neonatal ICU.

Meanwhile it has emerged that nurses in the neonatal unit at the hospital complained in 2008 about their great concern about the quality of care and safety offered to patients and their families.

Rita Barber, the Mayor of Valencia, has responded to the allegations in the press made over the weekend that she received gifts of luxury Luis Vuiton bags from lvaro Perez, from the Orange Market company, one of those implicated in the Grtel corruption case, by saying that all politicians are given gifts, adding that the Prime Minister had to be getting bigger and more expensive gifts than her.

The Spanish press printed a police report which showed that lvaro Perez had said, in a recorded phone call, that he was in a shop buying a bag for the Mayor, and that he had been giving her gifts for four years.

Barber has also said that she will be taking legal action against those accusing her. She said that the Valencia people had an honourable Mayor and that she was proud of her team, of her family and of her citizens.

She reminded the press that you have to prove guilt, not innocence, and said that in her 18 years as Mayor she had never had problems with the law.

She claimed that her earlier comments noting that the Prime Minister was given expensive anchovies by the President of the Cantabria region was the reason why she was now in the news.

The Guardia Civil has broken up a network of drug traffickers in Murcia who dealt in cocaine and cut the drug with fenacetina, a highly cancer-causing substance.

There have been 19 arrests in the Operation Quindo,14 Colombians, three Spaniards, a Cuban and a Lithuanian. All will appear shortly in Court number 7 in Murcia.

A Columbian man is thought to have been the head of the gang and his villa and ten cars have been impounded. Four kilos of almost 100% pure cocaine was recovered, as well as other drugs,

50 mobile phones and other consumer goods.

The group operated in two sections, both of which introduced and prepared the drug and then distributed it principally in the Murcia region. Hidden laboratories have been found in Elche (Alicante), and in Santomera (Murcia), as well as a warehouse in Puerto Lumbreras (Murcia).

Passengers Trapped 20hrs On Ferry Almost a thousand passengers spent 20 hours on board a ferry docked at Alicante port this

weekend, after strong winds caused the ship covering the route from Orn, Algeria, to crash into the dock on its arrival on Friday night. Those on board were able to disembark, and passengers for the Friday night trip to Orn, most of them from France, were told to board the ferry while technicians from the Port Authority tried to repair the dent in the ships stern.

In the event, the Djazair remained in port and the passengers remained on board until Saturday evening, when they were allowed to disembark for a short time before returning to spend another night on the ferry. Its understood that only some 40 or so chose to do so however. Reports of a queue of some 120 cars at the port on Saturday, as passengers arrived for the cancelled Saturday night service.

The Alicante-Orn service was due to be resumed on Monday with the arrival of a replacement ship from Algeria.

The issue obstructing progress in the Trilateral Forum on Gibraltar is not, the Gibraltar government says, the question of sovereignty, but the designation by Spain of waters around the Rock as a protected area. The European Commissions approval of Spains application to include part of the waters near Gibraltar in a new EU marine conservation area the Estrecho Oriental Site of Community Importance led the Gibraltar government to place a legal challenge against the decision, on the argument that Member States may only designate such sites in their national territory.

In a released statement, the Gibraltar government accused Spain, by its designation, of unilaterally changing the goal posts in the middle of the unilateral process, describing Spains action as unacceptable. Any agreement to cooperate, they said, must take place in

the context of the position as it was before Spains designation of the Site of Community Importance.

The next Tripartite Ministerial talks are due to take place on Gibraltar on 21st July, and if the meeting is confirmed, would mean that Miguel ngel Moratinos would be the Spanish Foreign Minister to step on the Rock. Official confirmation, Diario Sur reports, depends on agreement being reached on the matter of maritime and environmental cooperation on the waters which surround Gibraltar.

The Gibraltar government has meanwhile advised local boat owners, following what they call further incidents of unlawful encroachments by the Guardia Civil, to launch distress flares if they are stopped by Spanish authorities within BGTW British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.

3 Year Old Dies After Being Left In Parked Car

Pupils at 25 infant and primary schools in Murcia will be offered the chance of bilingual education in the next academic year under a programme which will offer a third of the schools classes in English.

The regional government programme will benefit more than one thousand children, and begins, in a first phase, with the first year of primary education, to be extended gradually to all other years at the schools involved.

The Murcia governments regional councillor for education, Constantino Sotoca, said while presenting the programme that it covers Physical Education, Natural and Social Studies,

and Art, while Spanish Language, Maths and Religion do not form part of the scheme.

External exams on proficiency in the subjects taught in English will be set by Trinity College in London, the body which is internationally renowned for examinations in English as a foreign language.

The councillor said teachers taking part in the scheme must follow a 200-hour intensive training course in the use of English in bilingual teaching.

Other measures are being brought in for mixed French and English bilingual teaching in secondary education.

25 Murcia Schools To Become Bilingual In Next School Year

Every July, the village of Anguiano, La Rioja, celebrates the feast of Mary Magdalene with La Danza de los Zancos, a whirling exhibition of enormous skill which accompanies the image of their patron saint in procession from the village church. The dance takes place on 22nd July, and is performed by eight young men dressed in voluminous yellow skirts, who whirl around to the sound of the dulzaina and the beat of the tamboril drum.

The skill which is needed to perform this dance comes in that it takes place half a metre above ground, on 45 cm wooden stilts fastened on at the knees. Its a tradition, passed on from generation to generation, which is known to date back to at least the early 17th century but is believed to have existed as long ago as pre-Christian times. Some say it owes its origins to the stilts which were once used to cross the areas flooded and snowy terrain.

Now classed as a fiesta of International Tourist Interest, the procession begins

outside the church after a mass in honour of the Magdalena, where the dancers must first negotiate the seven steps which give access to the church square. The most difficult part of the route is a steep cobbled street which takes its name from the skilled stilt dancers - the Cuesta de los Danzadores a tricky path to negotiate even in normal footwear. Here, one by one, the eight young men twirl down 40 metres of the cobbled 20 percent gradient, falling into the cushion of the crowd waiting in the square below once they reach the bottom.

They then each return up the steps again to repeat the journey again and again - as the Saint slowly makes her way down into the main square.

The stilt dance is held each morning and evening over three days, with other traditional dances taking place without the stilts as part of the festivities. The zancos come out again in September, when the image of the Saint is brought back down from the church to the chapel where she will spend the winter.

Construction Of Alicante Ikea Could Start In 2011

An agreement signed by the Mayor of

Alicante this week will allow the Swedish

company, Ikea, to start construction of a new store in the Rabasa area in 2011. The agreement must be ratified by a council meeting, but Diario Informacin reports that in it, the Town Hall agrees to push through planning changes to allow construction to go ahead under the Rabasa Zoning Plan. The procedure for these modifications would normally take a year, but the paper

said the Town Hall plans to get them all through by the end of October.

Its understood Mayor Sonia Castedo has promised approval of Rabasas land sub-divisions and detailed planning by the end of 2010, to allow Ikea to start construction at the beginning of the following year, once planning permission is granted.

The site chosen by Ikea is on Avenida de la Universidad, between the military barracks and the motorway roundabout.

A three year old boy has died after being left by his mother inside a parked car in Leioa, Vizcaya.

The child was in a back childseat and should have been taken to a nursery on her way to work, but the mother went straight to her employment forgetting the three year old in the back of the vehicle.

Its thought that the child was left alone for five hours, between 9am and 2pm with temperatures outside the closed car greater than 30 degrees. The child was already without a pulse when the mother found him when returning to the car at lunchtime.

The mother was arrested on charges of negligent homicide, and was later released with those charges outstanding.

Two Deaths On La Marina Beach, ElcheTwo bathers died in the space of 15

minutes on the La Marina beach in Elche on Thursday.

One of the victims, a 79 year old man from Madrid, suffered a heart attack, collapsing a few metres from the water.

While the emergency services were trying to revive him they got the call that there were another three people in difficulties in the water, caused it seems by a strong current.

The three, including a young girl, were all outside the range of the bathing buoys. A jet ski was used to reach them but a man, the childs grandfather was already unconscious.

Medical services could do nothing to save the 65 year old who was resident in Elche, which cause of death given as drowning.

Burnham Under Fire On Flu AdviceHealth Secretary Andy Burnham will outline

plans for a swine flu advice service later amid criticism government in-fighting delayed its launch.

MPs will be updated on the National Pandemic Flu Service in England which is due to go live on Thursday.

The Liberal Democrats say government departments in-fighting led to the hotline being launched six months late.

Mr Burnham denied that conflicting advice had been issued to pregnant women over swine flu.

Over the weekend there had been reported suggestions that pregnant women should avoid crowded places as a precaution. Some

reports said that women should even consider

not getting pregnant, but the minister denied

    this.

UK Terror Threat Level Is ReducedThe UK terror threat level has been

lowered from severe to substantial, the Home Office has said.

The level was raised in 2007, meaning a terrorist attack was highly likely; the downgrading means there is still a strong possibility of an attack.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said there remained a real and serious threat from terrorists and the public would see little change in security measures.

The level is set by the UKs Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC). The JTAC, which is a unit within the security service MI5, sets the level based on the intelligence available about terrorist intentions and capabilities.

Security sources said the decision to change the threat level was a finely-balanced judgement. The sources said the level was under constant review and could go up again if it was felt appropriate, our correspondent added. At substantial, the threat from terrorism is at its lowest since levels were first officially published three years ago.

Under the previous, slightly different system, the level was lowered to the equivalent of substantial in May 2005 - two months before the 7 July London bombings.

In a statement, the home secretary said: JTAC make their judgements based on a broad range of factors,

including the intent and capabilities of international terrorist groups in the UK. We still face a real and serious threat from terrorists and the public will notice little difference in the security measures that are in place, and I urge the public to remain vigilant. The police and security services are continuing in their thorough efforts to discover, track and disrupt terrorist activity.

There are five levels of terror threat, ranging from low - meaning an attack is unlikely - to critical - when an attack is expected imminently.

The threat level was last at critical in June 2007, after an attack on Glasgow Airport and the failed car bombings in central London.

Summer Rise In Mortgage LendingThe total amount of UK mortgage lending rose sharply in June

compared with the previous month, according to lenders. The amount lent by members of the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) reached 12.3bn in June, up from 10.5bn a month earlier.

However, the rise was mainly the result of the common seasonal increase in moving home and the figure was still 48% lower than in June 2008. A separate Bank of England report suggested a subdued UK credit market.

Overall, mortgage lending in the UK has slumped dramatically since the onset of the banking crisis in the autumn of 2007. But there have been some signs of greater interest from home buyers recently, and the CMLs estimated gross lending figure is the highest of any month this year.

The pick-up in Junes lending largely reflects seasonal factors,

and these may well support lending volumes at moderately higher levels over the rest of the summer, said CML economist Paul Samter.

The less volatile three-month on three-month figures show that gross lending in the second quarter of 2009 totalled an estimated 33.3bn, unchanged from the first three months of the year. This is the lowest level since the first three months of 2001.

Mr Samter said that the mortgage market had shrunk in terms of both the number of lenders offering home loans, and the actual number of these loans on offer.

This, as well as fears of job losses and low demand for mortgages among consumers, would hold back any significant and underlying improvement in total lending, he said.

Nissan To Create Hundreds Of JobsNissan has announced that

its Wearside factory will start producing batteries for electric cars, which is expected to create 350 new jobs.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said that Nissans 200m investment was great news for the local economy.

The plant, near Sunderland, has beaten off competition from other Nissan factories in Europe for the investment. The move could pave the way for the production of electric vehicles at the North East plant in the near future.

Sunderland could now be a strong contender to produce electric vehicles for Nissan in Europe, and we will continue to work with Nissan to ensure this happens, the prime minister said.

Mr Brown visited the Sunderland factory along with Business Secretary Lord Mandelson.

Mr Mandelson said a low-carbon economic area would be established in the North East.

As part of the project, 750 charging points would be installed across the region and a training centre specialising in the manufacture and maintenance of low-carbon vehicles would be set up.

Nissans 200m investment will be spread over five years and the new plant, which will make lithium-ion batteries, will also create and secure additional jobs in the related supply chain.

    NHS Must Prepare For Shortfall

The NHS must act now to prepare for an expected funding shortfall after 2011, two influential think-tanks have said. Both Labour and the Conservatives have said they will protect NHS budgets in coming years.

The Kings Fund and the Institute for Fiscal Studies said this would mean cuts in other departments or tax rises. But even the most generous forecast for the NHS is not enough to prevent it having to tighten its belt now, the analysis says.

John Appleby, chief economist at The Kings Fund and co-author of the report, said: The NHS is facing the most significant financial challenge in its history. Both the Labour and Conservative parties have pledged to avoid cutting NHS spending in real terms from 2011 but this will come at a big price, whether in departmental cuts elsewhere or tax hikes. The NHS has enjoyed unprecedented increases in funding since the turn of the century, but those days will soon be over. Thats why its crucial that the service does all it can over the next two years to prepare itself for the financial freeze that will take hold over the two coming spending review periods.

    Tories Reveal Bank Reform Plans

The Conservatives would give the Bank of England greater regulatory powers to try to prevent future financial crises, shadow chancellor George Osborne says.

The Tories would give responsibility for supervising financial institutions to a new financial policy committee.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats say that taxpayer-owned Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland should be broken up.

The government wants to create a new council to oversee financial stability, but keep the current regulatory system.

The council would see the Financial Services Authority (FSA), the Bank of England and the Treasury meeting regularly and reporting on the systemic risks to financial stability.

But Conservative leader David Cameron called the council effectively the same three organisations with nobody in charge and nobody taking responsibility.

The Conservatives would abolish the FSA. Their proposed financial committee, which would include independent appointees, would have tools to rein in bank lending. They would also create a new agency for consumer protection.

Mr Osborne also suggested that there was a case for separating a banks riskier activities from deposit-taking, but only after taking international developments into account.

I believe there is a case for separating some of the riskier investment banking activities, such as large-scale proprietary trading, from retail banking, but that it would not be sensible or, indeed, effective to impose separation unilaterally, he said.

Separately, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman Vince Cable said that large, failed UK banks are the financial equivalent of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

One of the first men to walk on the Moon has told the United States they should forget about going back - and focus on a mission to Mars instead. Captain Alan Bean said the US should work with the international community to explore new frontiers in space.

The 77-year-old was part of the Apollo 12 mission and became the fourth man to walk on the Moon.

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the historic moment astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the lunar surface.

Nasa is planning to return to the Moon by 2020 but Captain Bean commented: We ought to gather the international community and go to Mars. I know it isnt how others feel because it is much cheaper to go back to the Moon but I would rather we went to Mars. If we did it with all those other countries it would have a tremendously unifying effect on the Earth. It would be an inspiration for all people on Earth.

Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, has already declared that he believes Mars should be the primary target for Nasa. But the US space agency is more concerned at the outcome of a review of human space flight, ordered by President Barack Obama and due to report in August.

There have been suggestions that Nasas budget will be cut and that plans will have to be scaled back.

But Nasas director of integration Dr John Olson said: In Apollo, we saw seven to 10 dollars return for every one dollar invested. In these difficult economic times it causes one to think Is this the right investment? but precisely because of that tangible return we should do this.

Nasa has held a series of events to mark the 40th anniversary of the Apollo landing including Armstrong himself who made a rare public appearance alongside his Apollo 11 colleagues, Aldrin and Michael Collins.

Surtees Dies After F2 Race CrashThe son of motorsport legend John Surtees

has been killed in a freak accident during a Formula Two (F2) race at Brands Hatch in Kent. Henry Surtees, 18, was flown to the Royal London Hospital after he was struck by a wheel which flew off Jack Clarkes car.

His father, John, who won the Formula One World Championship in 1964, said Henry would be deeply missed: Henry had followed his heart from the time he first sat in a kart, he added.

Mr Surtees, of Surrey, who is the only man ever to have been world champion on two wheels as well as four, said: He treated seriously the balance between motorsport and school, having just finished his A-levels. The world beckoned and he was thriving on the freedom to concentrate on his motorsport. Despite bad luck in his motorsport, he had shown himself to be one with the possibilities

    of reaching the very top.

He added: Despite his young age he had shown maturity, technical understanding and speed. Most importantly he was a nice person and a loving son. He will be deeply missed.

Sundays race was red-flagged while Surtees was removed from the scene. The accident happened between the circuits Westfield Bend and Sheene Curve. Clarkes car hit a tyre wall and a wheel came off, hitting Henry Surtees on the head and knocking him unconscious. The teenagers car then struck the trackside barriers.

A spokeswoman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said Surtees had been taken from the scene by helicopter.

On Saturday, Surtees had claimed his first F2 podium finish, coming third in the opening race of the Brands Hatch weekend.

Best-selling Author McCourt DiesFrank McCourt, author of best-seller

Angelas Ashes, has died of cancer in a New York hospice.

The 78-year-old Irish-American writer was suffering from meningitis and had recently been treated for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Angelas Ashes, a memoir of McCourts childhood in Ireland, sold millions of copies and won the Pulitzer Prize.

Before the books 1996 publication, McCourt was a New York high school teacher for 30 years.

Quoted by the New York Times newspaper,

Susan Moldow of McCourts publisher Scribner said the cause of his death, on Sunday afternoon, was metastatic melanoma.

Born in New York, McCourt travelled to Ireland during the Great Depression with his parents at an early age. Angelas Ashes provides a graphic description of his childhood in abject poverty in the slums of the Irish city of Limerick. Described by its author as an epic of woe, the book was made into a Hollywood film in 1999 starring Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle. His other works include Tis and Teacher Man, which both draw on his later life in New York.

Bunting Out For Big British LunchA series of street parties and picnics are being held up and down the country, to encourage people

to get to know their neighbours better. The Big Lunch, the idea of Eden Project founder Tim Smit and Paul Twivy, aims to encourage millions of people to share food, drink and conversation.

They believe our neighbourhoods are the biggest untapped source of happiness we possess.

Leeds, Glasgow and even Number 10 Downing Street are hosting picnics. Organisers hope to see the largest number of street parties since the Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Mr Smit said: Imagine a summers day on which millions of us, throughout the UK, sit down to have lunch together with our neighbours: in the middle of our streets, around our tower blocks and on every patch of common ground. The food, entertainment, music and decorations we will have grown, cooked, or created ourselves. This will be a day to break bread with our neighbours, to put a smile on Britains face.

    Dear Sol Times

I wanted to respond to the situation with Rex, the dog causing so much concern, because the apparent lack of care by his owners. I want to raise awareness of the plight of all the unwanted animals here in Spain.

I have lived in Spain for 2 years, I am trying to learn the language so that I can effectively integrate and communicate with our Spanish community. We brought our two rescue dogs from England with us and one we lost recently; no more could be done for him after excellent help from our vet in Vera. Our other dog is almost 15 and still with us fortunately.

Since arriving here the cruelty overwhelms me and it is not just the local Spanish but ex pats also who abandon their pets with no thought for their welfare when they decide to return to their own country. There can be no excuse for such negligence and maybe the problem should be highlighted in other countries in an attempt to stop the situation escalating any more.

The main reason for this communication is to ask if there are any professionals out here in our area that can give advice and provide care when we are faced with abandoned animals or animals that have been injured on the roads. Obviously we would get the animal to a vet if possible but then what happens and who picks up the bills etc? Where does the dog go after treatment? If the local animal charities refuse to take in any more due to being full then what do the public do with the strays? Are we expected to leave them to roam the streets causing accidents, having more unwanted pups or to just leave them

to starve to death? We cannot all provide shelter and food until a foster home or permanent home can be found.

We currently feed 4 dogs that hang around our home as well as our own dog and ensure they have water particularly in this heat. The last dog to arrive was very badly neglected with sores, ticks, skeletal, eyes full of mucous, ravenously hungry and dehydrated. We have done what we can to make him comfortable and I have contacted all the local charities, as well as Guardia, Almeria sanctuary, and Town Hall. Apparently the official bodies cannot understand my Spanish so cannot help. I know I am not fluent but my neighbours appear to be able to understand me most of the time.

In desperation I rang my vet in Vera who is the only one to offer to check if the dog is chipped and if not he would phone the appropriate agency on our behalf to have the dog taken to kennels. He is Spanish so the language barrier wont be a problem. We will almost certainly keep the dog as we dont want him euthanised providing he has no major health problems and if he does not have an owner but we cant do this for every dog we come across as we live on our pensions and money for us as well as the charities is very tight.

Please could we have a response from charitable bodies as well as Government Agencies as to what the public are expected or advised to do? Im sure there would be many people out there grateful for such advice.

Pilgrims painstakingly cross parts of Spain on foot aiming to arrive at the beautiful

medieval city of Santiago de Compostela for The Feast Day of Saint James (San Tiago)

celebrations. It is an important fiesta for Spanish Catholics, especially Galicians.

Saint James is, after all, the patron saint of Spain and Galicia itself. The ancient

medieval walled city of Santiago de Compostela sets about celebrating Galician day,

where ancient and modern Galician customs are practised and remembered.

Throngs of pilgrims and Galicians alike gather in the streets and plazas of this

granite city and mix among the carnival groups, giants and papir mch cabezudos

(big heads). Street parties and concerts continue for much of the week.

The highlight of the festivities sees national politicians and dignitaries converging

on the Praza de Obradorio in an appeal to the Saint for peace and prosperity.

Do not on any account miss the Fuegos del Apstol - fireworks in honour of

Saint James, and as you will no doubt discover, a whole host of other types of

    pyrotechnics!

LA CONCHA, SAN SEBASTIANLa Concha is said by many to be one of the

best city beaches in Europe, let alone Spain. Situated in the north-east corner of Spain, near the western end of the border with France, San Sebastin is a chic coastal city with excellent Pintxos (the Basque name for tapas) and one of the nicest beaches youll ever get in a city.

PLAYA DE LAS CATEDRALESPlaya de las Catedrales, or the beach of

the cathedrals, officially called Praia de Augas Santas, is a beach in the north-west of Spain, in the region of Galicia. It is famous for its rock formations, best seen when the tide is low.

    SES ILLETES, FORMENTERA, BALAERIC ISLANDS

Formentera is the best Baleric Island for beaches (beating Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca) and Ses Illetes is the best beach in Formentera. They also rate nearby Cala Conta highly too.

BEACHES OF SITGES, CATALONIA, NEAR BARCELONA

The best beach near Barcelona, Sitges is a party town with numerous nice beaches. It is certainly a lot better than Barceloneta Beach in Barcelona. Sitges is a well known gay resort, but the main beaches are mixed. There are also nudist beaches in Sitges.

PLAYA DEL SILENCIO, ASTURIASVoted the best beach in Asturias! Asturian

beaches, in general, are the best beaches in northern Spain, narrowly beating those of Galicia.

NERjA, COSTA DEL SOL, ANDALUSIARather than heading west from Mlaga to the

likes of Torremolinos and Fuengirola, go east to Nerja. Nerja is a pueblo blanco (white village) with pretty houses and nice beaches, though it isnt free from the big hotels that blot the landscape all around this region. Alternatively, head a little futher to Motril. Both Nerja and Motril are within 1h30 of both Mlaga and Granada.

LA BARROSA, CHICLANA DE LA FRONTERA, CDIz

This beach is huge; 8 kilometres of fine white sand and clear blue water. It s the perfect sandy beach and the Spaniards love it.

There are two parts to the beach; the urbanised promenade and the untouched virgin stretch. Its protected by sand dunes and beach shrubbery. The promenade has numerous bars and restaurants along with tourist facilities such as showers and toilets. The first thing you will notice is how clean it is. La Barrosa has been awarded the European Blue Flag award for clean beaches. This is a delightful beach and absolutely perfect for a family holiday. If youd prefer to be nearer to the city, Playa de la Victoria in Cadiz itself is also very nice.

TARIFA, ANDALUSIATarifa has a lot going for it: the windsurfing

scene, whale-watching and a fun nightlife, but it also has something very much against it if all you want is to sunbathe: the wind! If you dont mind getting sand in all your creases, Tarifa will do you fine. It is also situated at the junction between the Atlantic and Mediterranean, which adds some novelty value. Be prepared to be surrounded by people that say dude and think shark tooth pendants are cutting edge fashion.

GANDIA, COSTA BRAVAThe Costa Brava is made up by a number of

small towns with pleasant beaches. Some towns are bigger than others (Denia is one of the bigger)

and some are package holiday monstrosities (Benidorm!!). Gandia is one of the beaches that is more popular with the Spanish than foreign tourists, so it must have something going for it.

PLAYA DE LOS PELIGROS & PLAYA DE LA MAGDALENA, SANTANDER

Santander is the capital of the little-explored region of Cantabria, located between Asturias and the Basque Country. Though Playa del Sardinero is more famous and offers the traditional sea view, Playa de los Peligros and Playa de la Magadalena are a bit different in that they look across the picturesque Baha de Santander, a bay with ships sailing by and misty mountains in the difference.

    Spains Best Beaches

Spain has over 5,000 miles of coastline, much of which is graced with beautiful beaches. Though the tourists flock to the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol, there are beautiful beaches all over Spain (well,

. Artists Live High On Outside Wall Two Brazilian artists are living

in a room with a bed, hammock, sofa and potted plant - all on the outside wall of a building in Rio de Janeiro.

Tiago Primo, 27, and his brother Gabriel, 20, are spending up to 14 hours a day in their vertical room, 10m (33ft) above a busy street. They are a living art exhibit, on display until mid-August.

Using climbing gear to manoeuvre up and down their room, much to the amusement of passers-by, the two brothers have been living on the bright red-and-yellow wall since May, snoozing, reading, eating lunch and chatting with people in the street below.

Gabriel Primo said: They ask how much is the rent, tell me I am going to fall ... Some take pictures and ask us to wave back. One of the most curious reactions came from a person who thought we were dolls, that we were not real.

They say the aim of the wall exhibit, which is redesigned every four months, is to make people think about their living space. But there are limits to this very public art exhibit - the brothers scramble over a wall to use the indoor bathroom in the neighbouring art gallery!

Mandela Show Continues Amid Row A London art gallery has refused to end a sale of prints by ex-South African leader

Nelson Mandela, despite a long-running legal dispute. Lawyers for Mr Mandela say he did not sign the works on display; they are taking legal action against Mr Mandelas former lawyer.

But Belgravia Gallery owner Anna Hunter said the prints were signed. She said the legal case had nothing to do with the gallery and the show, which opened on Sunday, would continue.

The matter is one between Mr Mandela and his former lawyer and has nothing to do with the gallery, she said.

The gallery previously planned an exhibition of Mr Mandelas artwork in 2005, but because of the legal furore in South Africa they decided to take the artworks down.

Four years later it still hasnt been resolved, said Ms Hunter. We put them back up on Sunday. There has been an incredible response to them. We are honoured to have Mr Mandelas artworks here.

She insisted the prints were authorised, saying she was present when Mr Mandela, now 90, signed the works. But Mr Mandelas lawyer Bally Chuene told the Associated Press the pictures were unauthorised reproductions and the gallery was being opportunistic.

Mandela did not sign the artworks, it is important for the public to know that are being deceived, he said.

The lawyer said he had written to the gallery last week asking for them to halt the sale - but Ms Hunter said she had received no letter.

Fifteen works are currently on display at the gallery, including lithograph prints and copies of his autobiography Long Walk To Freedom. The original signed works were sold in 2003 and the proceeds reportedly went to charities associated with Mr Mandela.

Cartier-Bresson Photos Not Lost The widow of Henri Cartier-Bresson, who

is credited with founding modern photo- journalism, says hundreds of his photos may still be on the black market. The photos, which had been archived in Frances National Centre for Contemporary Arts, suffered severe water damage from a leak in the 1990s.

Cartier-Bresson then agreed that the pictures should be destroyed, but some photos reappeared in 2001.

Martine Franck also accused the French state of negligence in the affair. The French authorities have refused to comment on the affair.

In the autumn of 1955, Cartier-Bresson held an acclaimed exhibition in the Louvre in Paris, displaying 426 photos dating from the 1930s through to post-war pictures taken in Russia, China, India and the United States. The show toured eight different countries and in 1960 the photographer gave the collection to the French state, who archived it in the National Centre for Contemporary Arts. But when the centre moved buildings 30 years later it was discovered that the pictures had been severely damaged.

Distraught, Cartier-Bresson agreed the photos should be destroyed, but somebody may have picked the images out of the bin. Several pictures appeared at an art fair in Paris in 2001, while others turned up at auction and at restoration houses.

According to Martine Franck, who has spoken publicly about the episode for the first time this week, the black market sales upset Cartier-Bresson so much that he refused to leave any more of his works to the French state. She said he believed it was incapable of looking after his photos properly.

Early in 1973, I found myself on my way to the paradise islands of Bermuda. 35,000 feet over the Atlantic, on my longest ever flight, in surely the noisiest plane in existence a BOAC VC10 my excitement was as fresh as the day I first received my clearance from the Bermuda Immigration Service 2 months earlier.

The route taken was Bermuda-Nassau-Tampa and Acapulco, and my two travelling companions in the adjacent seats were, it transpired, a Harley Street doctor and his wife on their way to the up-market Mexican resort for a three week break. How the other half live I mused.

Nice couple though! We got talking about this and that and, in view of their obvious pedigree, I refrained from taking out the copy of Playboy I had purchased at Heathrow, but instead pretended to enjoy the Daily Telegraph, bought at the same time.

Drinks had been served by the pristine female cabin crew - or hostesses as they were then called - and I was feeling mellow and suitably content with life as lunch was being served. Then suddenly as the hostess was attending the passengers across the aisle, she audibly broke wind. My mouth dropped open in utter disbelief, but like a true professional she carried on as if nothing had happened, and it was obvious that

    Its an Ill Wind!

those she was serving were completely oblivious.

I looked round to see if my fellow travellers had noticed, and saw to my horror that Dr and Mrs Harley Street were eyeing me with extreme distaste. My God, they thought it was me! And as if to reinforce their belief, I gave out a nervous girly-giggle.

The hostess now turned to me, and with a sweet smile began to serve the three of us. My eyes pleaded: Say something!. Her own smiled back: Not on your life matey! . . . and those adjacent to me, just drilled into mine as if to say: Dirty little man! She had left me to take the rap!

To attempt to deny it would have been a case of, Methinks he doth protest too much - and then in addition to being the BOAC phantom fluffer, I would also be labelled a cad!

To hell with it, I thought, Thats killed the conversation, and whipped out Playboy and started to read the articles therein.Yeah right, sure I did!!

Scientists say people swear when they hurt themselves because it actually reduces the pain.

A study at Keele University found volunteers were able to withstand pain for longer when they swore.

dr Richard Stephens, who led the study, believes it may explain why swearing is common in languages all over the world.

Swearing is quite an emotional form of language and it is an almost universal human linguistic phenomenon, he said.

The researchers tested 64 students tolerance to pain by asking them to submerge their hand in a tub of ice water for as long as they could while repeating a series of swear words of their choice.

They were then asked to carry out the task again while repeating non-offensive words they would use to describe a table.

They found that volunteers who swore were able to keep their hands submerged in the water for an average of 40 seconds longer; they also rated their pain lower!

    Swearing Really Does Help!

The words i love you are worth 163, 424, according to a new book which aims to create a new value system.

You Are Really Rich, You Just dont Know it Yet, by former ad executives Steve henry and david Alberts,

aims to show there is more to life than money. it puts the value of being in a stable relationship at 154,849 while placed on spending time with good mates is said to be worth 63,256.

The book is about a new value system, an alternative to a purely financial system, said mr

    henry.

Partly because, as a direct result of the credit crunch, people are exploring different ways of living,

and theyre looking for something to replace money as a general criterion for value.

A study was carried out by research specialist brainjuicer who asked over 1,000 people nationally what made them happy. They were asked to rate

50 different life events and experiences and compare them with the pleasure gained from a lottery windfall.

being in good health turns out to be our most precious possession with a value of 180,105. living in the city proves to be worth much less than being in the country. Other events in the top ten of lifes best experiences are: living in a peaceful and safe country - 129,448; having children - 123,592; spending time with your family - 110,04; laughing - 108,021; having sex - 105,210; going on holiday - 91,759; savouring the peace and quiet - 89,828.

Reading a book is worth 53,660 whereas going to the cinema comes in at half that 21,615. being happy at work is 37,229 but it doesnt compare with a looking forward to the weekend which is 49,764 and taking a day off has a value of 54,428.

    Love Equals 163, 424

A film fan hired out a cinema to screen his own spoof video in an elaborate proposal to his girlfriend.

Pete Simson, 26, told hannah mcdonagh, 25, they were going to watch an arty film at the watershed in bristol for her birthday. but she couldnt believe her eyes when he came on the big screen in his underpants miming to daniel bedingfields if Youre Not The One.

The five minute-long spoof shows mr Simson in a variety of colourful pants writhing on a bed, looking wistfully over a cliff top and walking along a beach as he mimes to the ballad.

The video was filmed by mr Simsons housemate liam Vowles on a hand-held camera who then edited it together.

After the screening finished, a spotlight

came on mr Simson who got down on one knee and proposed to miss mcdonagh to a round of applause.

The watershed agreed to do it, and said theyd do it for free, they even arranged for a fake audience, printed tickets and put adverts at the beginning as if it was a real film, said mr Simson, a radio reporter.

my film came up and hannah just stared at the screen with her mouth wide open, she couldnt fathom what was going on. when it was over the light above us came on and i got down on one knee. She managed to blubber out yes.

miss mcdonagh, a trainee lawyer, said: i was pretty confused when Pete came up on the screen, i was baffled and looked around at everyone else but they were staring at

the screen because they knew what was coming. i never thought he would go to these lengths but it is typical of Pete, he likes to be in the spotlight. The film looked awesome, really professional on the big screen, and it was hilarious.

    Elaborate Proposal

A kitten which crawled into a washing machine to escape the summer heat got the shock of its life when its owner decided to do the laundry.

Seven-week-old Toby was trapped in the washing machine for a full cycle at 30 degrees. it was only after the cycle had finished that the owner discovered the black kitten unconscious and hypothermic.

The pet was rushed from its home in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, to the local vet where it was given oxygen and warmed up.

Vet david mclaren, from Kirkton Veterinary Centre, said: The kitten was unconscious and hypothermic with an exceptionally low temperature and had clearly swallowed a lot of water. As well as the problems caused by the cold water, we also suspected it might have suffered fractures or internal injuries as a result of being spun during the wash.

Toby has now recovered, with no long-term ill-effects, and is back home with his mother and four brothers and sisters.

CONFIDENT INSIDE ATTRACTIVE OUTSIDE!You have looked at what is going on inside yourself, by

peeling away the layers and now you are feeling different, acting differently. other people will see a change in you. so have you updated the outside look of you to match the inside?

these changes you are making to your life may well need you to re-think your wardrobe. Both men and women have an image to other people. what is your image saying to your friends, your colleagues at work, anyone you come into contact with?

in the morning, take a good look at yourself in the mirror. some weeks ago it was not an easy task to do, but if you have been re-inventing yourself, you should be thinking more positively about your look and the type of person you have become. So, take a good, long look at yourself and what your clothes are saying about you. What is being communicated to other people may surprise you.

in 1967 a study of communication found that:

    55% of what we respond to takes place visually;

    38% of what we respond to is the sound of communication;

and 7% of what we respond to involves the actual words we use.

so your image speaks volumes, without you ever opening

your mouth. Ask yourself these questions:

What do you want to see reflected back when you look in the mirror?

Who do you want others to see when they look at you?

Do clothes help shape the way you see yourself? (I would say, absolutely)

Can a slickly tailored suit help give you an inner-glow of confidence? (Definitely)

See yourself for what you want to be. identify the look that suits you now, daytime and evening, workdays and weekends. Dont be vague about what your appearance is saying. Pinpoint the message. If it doesnt suit you, change the outfit.. Speak the truth.

if you are feeling good on the inside, you will be looking good on the outside. The more confident you are feeling, the more people will see the style you have chosen

try different styles of clothes and look in the mirror, maybe ask a trusted friend or relative to help you to see how

others see you and if the messages you are sending out are the right ones.

Always remember: confidence is sexy. The right outfit helps enormously, but its confidence that you want to cultivate. If you feel confident, if you feel attractive, youll radiate confidence and attractiveness. Its true what they say: Youre as attractive as you feel.

Your 50s+Despite the fact that many 50-

somethings are running around in head-to-toe Top Shop; after the menopause, decreased oestrogen levels mean skin loses plumpness and tone. It may also be dry, itchy and more sensitive so its important to take extra care of mature skin, as it is more fragile, prone to injury and infection and bruises easily, taking longer to heal.

    be GentleAvoid temperature extremes, such

as very hot baths as this will dry out

skin. Use a moisturising wash, such as Dove Go Fresh Nectarine & White Ginger Burst Care Body Wash and avoid soap, which is drying.

Apply a rich body cream daily, such as Jergens Naturals Age Defying Body Moisturiser and pay special attention to your hands, elbows, feet and shins.

    Keep SCrubbInG

Mature skin needs more exfoliation, not less! As cell renewal slows, dead skin cells sit on the surface for longer. This allows melanin to accumulate, causing mottled hyperpigmentation and dull skin, so its worth investing in a good exfoliator to remove dead cells and help boost clarity. It will also help with brown spots that are becoming an issue; these are usually caused by sun exposure but can also be triggered by hormonal imbalances.

Using an SPF all year is key to reducing and helping to prevent brown spots. Try RoC Minesol Spray Lotion SPF 30 and 50+, and LOral Paris Solar Expertise Sensitive Anti-Ageing Sun Protection Lotion SPF30.

you cant undo the past, but its never too late to get into good habits. so heres how to make the most of what youve got, whatever your age.

Look Good For summer At Every Age

NB: We know that some of the products are a little difficult to get hold of here in Spain, however weve noticed that some of the larger pharmacies Lorca, murcia and Almeria stock a ever-widening range of productsand if you live in Albox, felix, the pharmacist around the

corner from the church in Plaza mayor stocks a limited range of Boots soltan sun creams! And of course theres always www.boots.com

Your 30s This is when you are most likely to

start a family, so expect rampaging hormones and stress - and lots of fulfilment too, of course. Its vital to remember that even though it might be difficult, finding time for a healthy diet and exercise will help you maintain a better body and improve your mental clarity and strength.

Get GlOWInGIn your thirties, cell renewal starts

to slow down, which means dead skin cells hang around for longer. The result? Your skin can start to look

duller. The simple solution is to use a body scrub on dry skin twice a week before a shower. You could also try body brushing; spend a few minutes dry brushing in the direction of your heart two or three times a week to keep your skin looking great. Try the Elemis Skin Brush available online at www.elemis.com

    MInIMISe YOur StretCH MarKS

Weight gain and loss stretches your skin, breaking down the connective fibres. This shows up as pink or brown marks, which then fade. Some

women are more prone to them than others, but keeping your skin moisturised seems to help lessen their development - try Bio- Oil which contains PurCellin Oil plus vitamins A, E and calendula oils.

Creams with vitamin A derivatives, such as tretinoin, available on prescription, are believed to help stretch marks when they are still pink. An over-the-counter version is RoC Retinol Anti-Stretch Marks with retinol, also a vitamin A derivative.

The bottom line is the older the stretch mark, the less likely it is you can make it disappear.

Your 40s Theres nothing to stop you looking

better than ever now - however unlikely that might feel after a late night and a few too many glasses of Pinot Grigio! Our bodies respond well to a healthy routine, so a good diet and regular exercise are key; but if youve overdone the sun in the past, this is when it will start to show in crepey skin and brown pigmentation spots.

taCKle Sun DaMaGeYour hands and dcollet are often the

oldest-looking parts of your body, as theyre constantly exposed to UV and usually have less attention lavished on them than your face.

But its never too late to use sun protection - youll slow down further premature ageing.

Try Dr Nick Lowe Double Duty SPF15 Hand Cream and Este Lauder Bronze Goddess Sun Indulgence Lotion for Body

SPF30 on your dcollet. To nourish and brighten your skin and reduce discolouration, Nia 24 Sun Damage Repair for Dcolletage and Hands (www.spacenk.co.uk), is a bit pricey but a good investment; its exclusive ingredient, Pro-Niacin, has been chosen by the National Cancer Institute in the US for development as a potential skin cancer prevention agent.

Collagen production decreases with age. To help stimulate it, you could try using a retinol based product such as RoC Retinol Multi-Correxion Body, an anti-ageing body moisturiser, which not only aims to tighten saggy skin, it also helps to fade brown spots. Lancme Magistrale also stimulates elastin and collagen fibres and contains caffeine, so its ideal for slack, wobbly bits, such as arms, tummy and thighs.

pause for thoughtIn a moment of grandparental generosity, we offered to entertain our extremely boisterous

twin 6-year-old grandsons for the duration of their summer holidays. Whilst my wife has been getting the house ready, Ive been allocated the task of setting up my model railway, originally built up during my teenage years, for their amusement. Having had two daughters, this railway had rarely seen the light of day in the ensuing years, so much time has been necessary these past weeks unpacking boxes, discovering, testing, designing and constructing, with a little bit of occasional replacement or addition thrown in for good measure!

All this, of course entirely in the line of duty, when there are so many other things, mostly involving a concrete mixer, Id so much rather be doing! But Ive struggled on regardless in uncomplaining sufferance to ensure completion of the work in time for their arrival. But of course, in spite of the contrary impression I may try to give, my wife knows full well Im having a ball! How great to have the opportunity to rediscover my youth in this way, with a legitimate reason to play with my boys toys, that will actually still be around, needing occasional servicing, even after the grandchildren have left!

And Id never actually realised just how much Id missed this one-time hobby until I started unpacking it, but each box opened brings memories and passions flooding back causing me to appreciate just how much we miss our past, often without really realising it. And Id guess that if we took the time to reflect, wed all find things from our past weve let drop that we actually miss. And as youd expect me to add, I find there are many for whom the experience most missed is a Church attendance that once had been very important; but the thought of trying a new environment here in Spain seems a touch overwhelming. So if that describes you, then drop me a line and well see how easy and unthreatening that process could become.
