ROTATING DISC LIQUID-LIQUIDEXTRACTION UNIT
MODEL: BP 07
HIS Rotating Disc Liquid-Liquid Extraction Unit (Model: BP 07) has been designed to demonstrate thebasic principles of a liquid-liquid extraction process. When separation by distillation is ineffective or verydifficult, liquid-liquid extraction is one of the main alternatives to consider. Close boiling mixtures or substances
Tthat cannot withstand the temperature of distillation, even under a vacuum, may often be separated from impurities byextraction, which utilizes chemical differences instead of vapor pressure differences.
Separation by liquid-liquid extraction can be defined as the selective removal of one or more components eitherfrom a homogeneous liquid mixture or from a solution, using a second liquid or solvent, which is partially or whollyimmiscible with the first.

DESCRIPTION
The normal mode of operation is that the light phaseand heavy phase liquids are pumped countercurrentlyinto the extraction column. The heavy phase will enterthe top of the column and flow downwards while thelight phase will enter the bottom of the column and flowupwards due to density differences. Countercurrent flowin the column and agitation of the two phases by therotating disc will cause the transfer of solute componentfrom one phase (raffinate) to the other (extract). Theraffinate will emerge at the bottom while the extract willemerge at the top of the extraction column. This liquid-liquid extraction process is done in numerous continuousstages throughout the column to give a higher degreeof separation.
Sample points are provided at key positions aroundthe unit to allow collection of both light and heavy phaseliquids. In this way, effects of rotating disc speed andfeed flow rates of both phases on the extraction efficiencycan be evaluated by means of sample analysis.
