Polycom, Inc. All rights reserved.#As you saw on the last slide, the Capture Station Pro appliances are positioned below the Broadcast Producer and above video teleconference (VTC) end-points that are recorded through a device such as the Polycom RSS 4000.

Capture Station Pro appliances capabilities are:Capture of video and slide content through a DVI or VGA input allows the Capture Station Pro appliances to automatically capture the incoming material and publish the content to servers for end viewers to access the content. The servers allow scalability for the number of viewers in the network requesting the presentation content.The captured presentation content, Microsoft PowerPoint slides for example, is synchronized with the video of the speaker so that slide delivery happens at the correct time. Each slide image is captured as a standard JPEG image in three resolutions: one for normal display in the user interface, one in higher resolution for when slides are displayed full screen which avoids jaggies on the content edges and one small format for the on-demand thumbnail view.Presentation content can be streamed live as the event happens for remote viewers to watch the presentation live, or it can be stored locally for later publishing as an on-demand asset or both.Currently the Capture Station Pro appliances come in several different models depending on the customers need to stream Windows Media, Flash or Smooth Streaming formats and MP3 podcasts.Every Capture Station Pro appliance ships with one licensed copy of the Media Editor software. This post event editing software allows complete control to change what was in the live capture. Skins, slides, insertion of other presentation content and many other capabilites are included with the Media Editor and its simple four step publishing process.All hardware is standard off the shelf hardware integrated with the software for an out-of-the-box appliance setup and move into production.The user interface, or skins, allow for easy branding by changing to the customers logo and background colors. The end user can use the skins to view presentations with the Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safarai web browsers.

The Capture Station Pro appliances are available in a standard desktop Dell PC, a mobile/portable edition which has a built-in display, protective cover complete with a handle ready to go on the move to other venues, or as a kit which includes the two PCI capture cards and Polycom Software.

The Capture Station Pro appliances do not ship with Adobe Flash, Microsoft PowerPoint or Adobe PDF.10

The video inputs are analog S-Video and Composite video. The audio inputs are balanced XLR or unbalanced RCA connector inputs. One video and one audio stereo pair of inputs may be active at a time. If there are multiple cameras or microphones, then the system integrator is expected to have the appropriate mixers, distribution amplifiers and cables in place to provide one set of audio and video inputs for the full frame rate video and stereo audio inputs. The Capture Station Pro appliances also have a DVI input which includes a DVI to VGA dongle for the presentation content input. Likewise, the system integrator is responsible to provide any required DVI or VGA distribution amplifiers and cables that are required.

Once connected, the Capture Station Pro appliances, shown here, can record a presentation, but does not have the ability to stream live or publish for viewers to watch on-demand without servers being in place.11

The Microsoft Streaming Windows Media Services (WMS) Server handles the Windows Media Video live streaming and on-demand video file (.wmv). The IIS web content server manages all of the other files associated with a presentation. There are dozens of files that comprise a presentation consisting of html, scripts, xml and other files. The Capture Station Pro publishes all of these files to these two servers making them available for serving to end viewers. Files are transferred to the servers either via a shared directory and a Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) connection to the servers if the systems are all behind a firewall. If the servers are outside the firewall and the Capture Station Pro is behind the firewall, then FTP or Secure FTP (SFTP) is used to transfer the files. The live video stream is streamed from the Capture Station Pro encoder to the publishing point on the streaming media server.12

The screen view in the top right shows the Default user interface layout. There are many different layouts of which one may be selected at the beginning of a presentation capture. The skin and layout can be changed later using the Media Editor. Once the URL is entered through the end users browser, then all of the components inside the red box are loaded which includes the logo and color branding, slide area, metadata, scripts and an embedded media player. Once the graphic elements are loaded then a URL to the streaming media server is passed to the media player which starts playing either the live stream or the video file if on-demand. New slides which are pushed as JPEG files to the browser are requested from the IIS Web Content Server at the appropriate times and displayed in the slide region. By using standard JPEG files which any browser can render means that proprietary PowerPoint or other plug-ins are not required and standard files can be used.

Highlight to the students that this works fine for making content available, but after getting 50 to 100 presentations uploaded then finding content becomes more of an issue for end viewers. In addition there are minimal metrics available to determine what content is being used, what has gone viral and what is sitting there languishing. You also dont know who is viewing what content and have little control to restrict or determine who can view which presentations. You need a media management capability.
