(…) annual direct medical costs of HAI to U.S. hospitals ranges from $28.4 to $33.8 billion (…) the benefits of prevention range from a low of $5.7 to $6.8 billion (20% of infections preventable, CPI for all urban consumers) to a high of $25.0 to $31.5 billion (70 percent of infections preventable, CPI for inpatient hospital services).

Relation of the Inanimate Hospital Environment toEndemic Nosocomial Infection
Dennis G. Maki, M.D., Carla J. Alvarado, B.S., Carol A. Hassemer, B.S., and Mary Ann Zilz, R.N. N Engl J Med 1982; 307:1562-1566
… many epidemics of nosocomial infection have stemmed from reservoirs of pathogens in the inanimate hospital environment, the contribution of the environment, particularly air, surfaces, and fomites, to the acquisition and spread of endemic nosocomial infection is unclear, and the value of routine microbiologic surveillance of the inanimate hospital environment has been controversial. In 1974 the Committee on Infections within Hospitals of the American Hospital Association concluded: The occurrence of nosocomial infection has not been related to levels of microbial contamination of air, surfaces, and fomites . . . meaningful standards for permissible levels of such contamination do not exist . . .

ten studies were considered eligible for inclusion in the review (…) Pathogensevaluated included meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Clostridiumdifficile and multiple bacterial types
The evaluation of the relevant data extracted from the 10 studies included in our review indicates that airborne hydrogen peroxide, either in the form of vapour or dry mist, can be an effective method of disinfection of the hospital inanimate environment.
Few studies have evaluated the use of airborne hydrogen peroxide disinfection as anadjunctive infection control measure in actual hospital practice. These limited relevant dataare favourable, but further studies are needed to assess the effectiveness, safety, costs, andapplicability of this novel method against other available cleaning methods.

To analyse two hospital outbreaks caused by MRAB, determine their epidemiology, carbapenem-resistance mechanisms and assess the effectiveness of surface disinfection by vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP)
A combination of rigorous infection control measures including strictisolation, education of staff, hand hygiene and surface decontaminationusing VHP halted the outbreak. The results of this study confirm the importance of rigorous infectionprevention and control measures, combined with VHP decontamination incontrolling an outbreak of MRAB.

Air Disinfection
Disinfectant spray-fog techniques for antimicrobial control in hospital rooms has been used. This technique of spraying of disinfectants is an unsatisfactory method of decontaminating air and surfaces and is not recommended for general infection control in routine patient-care areas.

RILEVAZIONE ADENOSINTRIFOSFATO (ATP)
• UTILIZZANDO UN SISTEMA PER LA RILEVAZIONE DI ADENOSINTRIFOSFATO (ATP), È POSSIBILE
CONOSCERE IL GRADO DI IGIENE DI UNA SUPERFICIE, DELLO STRUMENTARIO CHIRURGICO O DI
UN ENDOSCOPIO RIPROCESSATO, OTTENENDO UNA MISURAZIONE OGGETTIVA, PUNTUALE,
RIPETIBILE E ARCHIVIABILE DIGITALMENTE.

Griffith, C.J., Cooper, R.A., Gilmore, J., Davies, C., and Lewis, M. An evaluation of hospital cleaning regimes and standards. J Hosp Infect. 2000; 45: 19e28
