    T H E B E S T O F C H I L E ,ARGENTINA & URUGUAY

  • South America continues to reinvent itself, discovering new valleys, making new wines and producing old favourites differently and better than before.

This offer features many favourites that members enjoy so much as well as a number of new finds that are well worth trying. Among new highlights this year is our first sparkling wine from Chile, a fiano from a 1,200m-high vineyard in La Rioja, Argentina, and a new viognier from Limarí.

We also feature a red and rosado cinsault from 50-year-old unirrigated bush vines from the southern Itata Valley. We have earlier-picked wines matured in foudres to increase freshness, reduce alcohol and banish oakiness. We have more malbecs from the very cool Altamira district of Mendoza. From Uruguay, we have selected a lovely fresh tannat from Pisano and have made another bottling with Familia Deicas of their Garzón tannat.

There is much to discover and enjoy! If the choice is too wide, our six mixed cases provide excellent snapshots with savings to encourage exploration.

I am extremely excited by this selection of wines from Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. The quality and variety we are able to offer in this price range has never been better. First of all, our six Society wines (also available in a mixed case) come from the best suppliers and regions and offer the finest quality and value for money in our range.

From Chile, we offer soft and plummy merlots and carmenères, cedary cabernets and cherry-scented pinot noirs. From

Argentina, the soft and mature Weinert Carrascal 2008 has been featuring in a number of journalists’ under-£10 favourites, and from Uruguay we have two contrasting wines – the sweet and succulent marselan, a grenache-cabernet sauvignon cross, and we have been back to Pisano and selected a beautifully balanced tannat which is bright and fresh.

The white wine selection shows a wider range of varieties available at this price than before. We have three aromatic varieties,

peachy viognier, spicy gewürztraminer and grapy torrontés. We have two intense Chilean sauvignon blancs from the lovely 2013 vintage and a number of chardonnays ranging from the fruitier end of the spectrum, Doña Paulina and the melony Silbador, to the The Society’s taut and mineral selection from the Limarí Valley. We also have a fine-flavoured fiano from a 1,200m-high vineyard in Argentina.

The Society’s Argentine MalbecSoft and gentle malbec with a hint of oak. This high-quality wine is made for us by Susana Balbo, one of Argentina’s greatest winemakers. 14% ref AM-AR1301 £6.95 bottle £83 dozen

Miguel Torres Santa Digna Curicó Merlot, 2011 From the 15-year-old El Aromo vineyard in Curicó, this is lovely plummy chilean merlot, yet lively and fresh too. 80% aged in barrel for six months. 14%ref AM-CE6911 £7.50 bottle £90 dozen The Society’s Chilean Leyda Pinot NoirMade for us by Viña Leyda from cool-climate Leyda fruit. Weinert Carrascal 2008 Like a baby Cavas (Weinert’s top wine), this delicious Argentine red is made from a blend of 40% malbec, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 25% merlot aged two years in foudres and six months in vats before bottling. Rich, velvety texture with mature flavours of cedar and leather. 14% ref AM-AR2841 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen NEW Pisano Progreso Tannat 2013 Deep, inky colour, ripe blackberry-fruit aromas followed by the fine and persistent palate; it all adds up to a wonderfully characterful wine from Uruguay. • THE CREAM OF SOUTH AMERICAN WINEMAKING

Winemaking never stands still in South America and growers continue to discover new valleys and make new exciting wines and each year I come back buoyed with enthusiasm for the remarkable speed at which this is still happening. Here I have picked some of the producers who are at the forefront of South America’s continued reinvention. These wines are made from lower-yielding vineyards in regions where the matching of variety to climate, and increasingly soil, offers distinctive character and outstanding quality.

De Martino, for instance, have made a lovely red and rosado from old bush vines of cinsault in the green, forested Itata Valley. The cool climates of Limarí and Leyda continue to thrive and we are buying more wines from Tabalí and Ventolera, including a new viognier and a new pinot noir rosado.

Koyle have been planting steep hillside vineyards to 10,000 vines per hectare (ha)

    – unthinkable in Chile 25 years ago. This should produce marvellous wines. They have also been making some very fine and mineral wines near the coast where the cooler climate suits pinot noir and sauvignon blanc.

This year we have bought our first sparkling wine from Chile: Subercaseaux from Concha y Toro is the best we have tasted.

We have an excellent range of producers in Argentina covering a wide variety of styles from the old-fashioned Weinert to the classic Mendel style; Mausbach and Sejanovich are making lovely violet-scented malbec from the coolest area in Mendoza, Altamira, using classic techniques such as co-fermentation.

We have made another fine bottling of tannat from the Garzón vineyard to the east of Uruguay. High vigour due to the 1,100mm rainfall can be a problem in Uruguay but Garzón’s well-drained granite soils and cool temperatures offer great finesse.

DE MARtINO: Itata Valley and Foudres

De Martino are innovators, always exploring new valleys and new winemaking techniques. This year I travelled 400km south of Santiago with them to see the unusual vineyards of the Itata Valley. It’s a lovely region of undulating countryside and it’s green, unusual in most of Chile’s winemaking regions, due to the rainfall and the copious plantings of pine trees. Plentiful rainfall of 1,100mm means the vineyards do not need supplementary irrigation. The cinsault vineyards were planted in the 1950s and 1960s and are trained as bush vines and planted to a density of about 4,425 vines/ha. De Martino have made a lovely rosado and a red wine from cinsault which are well worth trying.

De Martino dislike the overt aromas of new oak and so have also been pioneering the use of 2,500-litre foudres. This size does not contribute any oak flavour but allows oxygen in to develop the flavours and soften the tannins in the reds. We have bought the first two wines, the carmenère and chardonnay, to have been matured in these foudres. We like their understated character, their freshness and that they are designed to partner food.

RED NEW De Martino Gallardia del Itata Cinsault 2013Lovely ripe, peppery cinsault with sweet fruit and soft tannins. Enjoy in its exuberant youth and serve cool. 13.5% ref AM-CE7371 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

De Martino Alto de Piedras Isla del Maipo Carmenère 2011Harvested earlier at 13% and then matured in foudres, this is one of the first ‘new-generation’ wines from De Martino which are fresher, finer, less oaky and better with food than early ‘fruit bomb’ styles. Now to 2022. 13% ref AM-CE7381 £17 bottle £204 dozen

  • tABALI: Limarí ValleyWe are buying more and more wines from this impressive outfit in the Limarí valley. Its combination of different climates and soils allows a wide variety of superb wines to be made here from crisp sauvignon blancs to luscious dessert wines. The Talinay wines from very cool limestone vineyards are intense, pure, subtle and mineral rather than fruity in character and show how refined Chilean wines can be.

I am excited by the new generation of sparkling wines now being made in Chile. We will list more later in the year. Cool, limestone-rich vineyards in Limarí produce ideal low-alcohol, mineral base wines for sparkling wines. Subercaseaux, made by Marcelo Papa of Concha y Toro with a consultant from Champagne, is the best we have tasted.

  • CONO SUR: Superb cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir Few companies in the world excel at cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir for it takes a different mind-set to make both well. However, Adolfo Hurtado is a talented winemaker who is able to produce superb examples of both types. The Ocio 2011 is the best-ever vintage by quite a long way and Ocio is the best pinot in Chile, so this is a strong recommendation. Their 20 Barrels cabernet is from the great Puente Alto vineyard, where Almaviva, Chadwick and Don Melchor is situated. It is a tertiary terrace of the Maipo River with rounded stones and gravel, ideal soil for cabernet.

KOYLE: Coast and AndesCristóbal Undurraga is a very impressive viticulturist and winemaker who, with help from brothers Max (finance) and Alfonso (sales), is making superb wines with great character and personality. Unlike most owners, who tend to live in the capital city Santiago, Cristobal lives in a house in the vineyards with his family and loves the rural life.

Koyle is his new venture, having sold the business which carries his name, and they have planted impressive vineyards, unthinkable 20 years ago, in Alto Colchagua at 450 metres altitude near the Andes, including a steep hill with individually staked syrah vines at the high density of 10,000 vines/ha. They have also planted mourvèdre, tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and others, which they are tending biodynamically. At a cooler site near the coast at Paredones they are making elegant, understated pinot noir and sauvignon blanc of great refinement.

    RED

  • WEINERt: Old-fashioned ArgentinaIn a style akin to Lebanon’s Chateau Musar or traditional Rioja, Weinert make wines with lovely tertiary aromas of tobacco, leather and cedar. They keep their wines in large old foudres for two to four years in a deep, cold, granite cellar and bottle them when the tannins have softened to a silky sweetness. The excellent-value Weinert Carrascal 2008 is available on page 3.

Weinert Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 Generous old-fashioned cabernet now round and mellow, with notes of leather and tobacco, after ageing in large old wooden casks for three years. Now to 2016. 14.5% Available from mid February ref AM-AR2561 £10.50 bottle £126 dozen

Weinert Cavas de Weinert 2004Of all Bernardo Weinert’s stable of Argentine wines, Cavas is the one which we regularly consider the most interesting. Lovely traditional style, aged in large oak vats for three to four years until soft and mellow. Cavas is made from 40% malbec, 40% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. Now to 2015. 14.5% ref AM-AR2571 £12.95 bottle £155 dozen

MENDEL: Classic Wines from Argentina Mendel have lots of old vineyards of over 70 years of age, many interplanted with olive trees in the traditional style, and age their red wines in 225-litre barriques of French oak for 12–15 months. Roberto de la Mota is one of the most able and experienced winemakers in South America and ensures that the grapes are picked ripe but not too ripe. Their wines have a hint of European restraint without excessive new-world fruitiness and are designed to be enjoyed with food. Indeed, their red wines are best decanted half an hour or so before serving. For the red wines we are offering 2008, 2010 and 2011 as they were all lovely cool years of high quality.

RED Mendel Malbec 2011 Made from a vineyard planted in 1928 in the Mayor Drummond area of Mendoza, near Lunlunta. 2011 was a fine and cool year giving an intense floral, scented nose and a medium-bodied, refreshing palate of considerable elegance. • SEJANOVICH & MAUSBACH: Co-Fermentation and BlendingZaha and its bigger brother, Teho, come from the Altamira region of Mendoza. Its vines are planted at 950–1,000m in the coolest, southernmost part of the region, on sandy and silty soils with some limestone resulting in elegant fine-textured wines. Ex-Catena winemaker Alejandro Sejanovich is keen on partial co-fermenation (fermenting different varieties together in the same vat). The colouring matter of malbec binds together with the tannins of petit verdot and cabernet franc producing a richer-tasting and more-structured wine with smoother tannins than if fermented separately. Petit verdot contributes structure and cabernet franc a cedary top note to malbec’s voluptuous fruit and violet scent.

Zaha Malbec 2011This is an intensely aromatic malbec with floral and blackberry notes. The soils in Altamira, predominantly sandy and silty with some limestone, give an exquisite, fine-grained silky texture, especially after a year in barrel. SUSANA BALBOOne of the great figures of the Argentine wine scene, Susana Balbo is supremely gifted and able. After many years working for others, including Torino in Salta and Martins and Catena in Mendoza, and then working in rented wineries, building her own Dominio del Plata winery is the realisation of her dream home, although it has already been extended a number of times, such has been her success. We are delighted she makes The Society’s Argentine malbec for us. Her Signature Malbec is a beautifully soft, opulent wine. Her Brioso is a refined cabernet-based blend, with exquisite cedary bouquet, while Expresivo is a wonderful wine with an explosive fruity flavour.

Susana Balbo Signature Malbec Mendoza 2011This superb wine is a complex-tasting blend of 90% malbec with 10% cabernet sauvignon from an excellent-quality, cool harvest.
