From the General ManagerWELCOME to the June 2012 edition of the Southside Community News. A subject that has received regular attention in the media lately is diabetes. More and more people are being diagnosed with diabetes and the most common is Type 2, which is really a social disease. Type 2 diabetes is avoidable and on Thursday, June 28 at 9am at Southside Sport and Community Club, Diabetes Australia Queensland will be providing a free seminar in the club lounge. Diabetes Australia Queensland CEO Michelle Trute will host the seminar. Michelle has done presentations on Channel 9 and ABC Radio as well as writing columns in The Courier-Mail so you are assured of an entertaining presentation while you learn more about diabetes and how to either prevent it or manage it.The seminar is free and I would encourage anyone who is dealing with diabetes or cares for or has family members with diabetes to come along and spend an hour of your time to learn more about this life threatening disease. There is an old saying – “use it or lose it”. For more than 10 years, we have been providing a courtesy bus service six days a week for the benefit of our club

THE Every Australian Counts campaign welcomes the historic 2012 Budget announcement allocating $1 billion over the next four years to launch the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The Budget allocation includes $342.5 million over three years for individualised packages for people with a disability and their families.Every Australian Counts national campaign director John Della Bosca said: “Every night around Australia aging carers go to bed worried about what will happen to their son or daughter with a disability when they can no longer provide care and support.“I hope tonight they sleep a little easier knowing the NDIS is on its way. In a tight fiscal environment, committing $1 billion to disability reform represents an historic shift. “Disability has been in the too hard basket for decades. People with a disability and their families have been abandoned. The waiting lists for equipment, the lack of respite care and the underfunding of services has been a national disgrace. But today we start to right that wrong.“The plan outlined tonight relies heavily on cooperation between the federal, state and territory governments. I know that state Ministers around the country support the NDIS. “They want to see it become a reality. So we look forward to everyone sitting around the table and working out how to make the NDIS real.”Federal Member for Moreton, Mr Graham Perrett, said all Australians who suffered a severe or profound disability deserved care and support, not just the few who survive the lucky dip of our legal system.“People with disability, their families and carers in Moreton

tell me they are tired of waking up every day to a broken system that doesn’t respond to their needs and doesn’t give them choice or control,” Mr Perrett said. “They’ve asked me to help make an NDIS real, and the Gillard Labor Government through Wayne Swan’s Budget, has heard their call.”Mr Della Bosca said investing in the NDIS now made economic sense. In late 2011, P r i c e w a t e r h o u s e C o o p e r s reported that without the NDIS, the current national disability spend of almost $7 billion a year will blow out to $45 billion a year by the year 2035, as state governments continue to funnel taxpayers money into short-term emergency fixes. In a joint media release from the Prime Minister and the Minister for Disability Reform, the $1 billion Budget commitment is broken down to:• $342.5 million over three years from July next year for individually funded packages for people with significant and permanent disability.• $154.8 million over three years

from July next year to employ local area coordinators to provide an individualised approach to delivering care and support to people with a disability.• $58.6 million over three years from July next year to assess the needs of people with a disability in the launch locations.• $122.6 million over four years to start preparing the disability sector for the new way of delivering disability services. Building the capacity of disability organisations to adjust to an NDIS is critical to success, particularly in the launch locations in the first stage of roll-out.• $240.3 million over four years to build and operate an NDIS information technology system.• $53 million over four years to establish a new National Disability Launch Transition Agency to coordinate implementation and manage the delivery of care and support to people with a disability and their carers in launch locations from 2013–14.Information about the NDIS, new expert working groups and NDIS Budget details: www.ndis.gov.au

members and bingo patrons. We originally owned a 22-seat bus which was considerably underutilised and so we reverted to a maxi taxi service with Black & White Cabs before ever increasing costs again caused us to review the service and revert to our own smaller bus. The current courtesy bus service has been operating since March 2010 and a recent review of the service revealed that it was only used by a very small number of patrons. Operating a courtesy bus is very expensive and therefore we are considering changes that will reduce the costs and still provide a service during the busier times. The original idea of the courtesy bus service was to reduce pressure on the car parking and provide our members with a safe means of door to door transport. The common comment about the service was that it didn’t always run on time and that it took too long for some people to get to and from the club, particularly if they were the last on the list. What has to be remembered is that the service is free and we are not operating a taxi service for individuals. If you book the courtesy bus, please allow for some time variation because every run is different and we do cover a fairly wide area and traffic conditions also play a part. What a delight to see the members turning up on Friday nights at the Bowls Club. Jeff and Rita have gone to considerable trouble to create a pleasant “restaurant” feel about the club and the members are responding. With an excellent value for money menu and great service, what else could you as for. Don’t forget to take a few bucks for the raffles. SeeyouatSouthside,GrahamChattin

BANKS often are in the crosshairs of the media and the public. What is sometimes not told is their behind-the-scenes effort in the community.Bendigo Bank sponsors RACQ CareFlight, a Queensland service that saves scores of lives each year. RACQ CareFlight is a not-for-profit community rescue helicopter service supporting the communities of southern Queensland. With a response time as little as six minutes, RACQ CareFlight has helped more than 16,000 sick and injured patients. A critical care doctor and QAS paramedic are on board for every mission and the service is provided at no direct cost to patients. After 30 years, RACQ CareFlight’s biggest supporters are still the communities of southern Queensland, who provide almost half of the charitable service’s funding. Each Bendigo Bank branch operates its own fundraising campaign for RACQ CareFlight and for the first year the Mount Gravatt branch will push its barrow. “We have approached various businesses in the area for donations to assemble a giant raffle,” said branch customer relationship officer Michelle King.“We will be selling tickets in the raffle for the month of June from our branch at Shop 3 and 4, 1981

Logan Road with the draw done in July when we invite the sponsors to a networking gathering.“We have been 10 years in this location and believe we have a solid relationship with local community.“We also will take the raffle out into the community and hope to raise as much as we can. We also will have huge toy bear dressed as an RACQ pilot with goggles in the raffle.”

Michelle said a colouring-in competition also would be held at the two local schools on Logan Road with the bank sponsoring piggy bank accounts. The Mt Gravatt branch caters for a wide range of southern suburbs, stretching from Logan into Camp Hill and Holland Park.“We even have customers who come over from Macleay Island on the ferry to use this branch,” Michelle said.

A CLUB MEMBER from Wishart has taken out the first draw in the Fiesta CARnival promotion. The member, who preferred to remain anonymous, has been a member for 10 years and was over the moon when his key fitted the door of the Fiesta during the April 29 draw.“I had key number 19 out of 20 and at first I didn’t think it had fitted,” he said. “I tried it a second time, turned the key then heard a murmur around the tables.“I felt sorry for the other person who still had to come as it was down to a two in one chance by then.”Five contestants are selected each Saturday in the three-month promotion and the 20 key holders lined up in front of a buoyant audience.Tension built as key holder after key holder tried to open the door of the Fiesta on display.

“When I was trying the key I went semi-numb,” the winner said. “I had trouble getting the key in as it didn’t feel right. “When I tried again I pulled the handle a little and it came away and I opened it the first four inches. I thought then that I had done it and ‘now what’. “My numbed look of expression turned to happiness.”The winner said that unfortunately he would not be keeping the Fiesta, although he had enjoyed driving it for the past three weeks.“It doesn’t suit my family purpose as I tow a boat and am used to a big six,” he said.“But I have to say

YES, winter is almost here! It’s the time when a lot of us put those exercise clothes back in the cupboard in exchange for their warmer winter gear. It’s also the time when we should actually be increasing our exercise and maintaining a healthy diet. Apart from the obvious weight loss and fitness reasons, exercising in the cooler months helps the body combat the flu and other illnesses, while helping you get a better night’s sleep. And we all know that the body functions better after a good night’s sleep. Furthermore, you actually burn more kilojoules when exercising in the cold, as your body tries to maintain its internal temperature or body heat.Winter is also a dangerous time food-wise, as many of us reach for those high-starch, “comfort foods”, as well as simply making bad food choices through the colder months. The combination of an increase in energy input and decrease in energy output during winter often leaves us feeling flabby and unmotivated come spring, and wondering how we’ll get back to our ideal summer body in just three months. So why not kick off your summer fitness plan right now? It will give you an extra four months to hit your goals and will make this winter worth getting out of bed for. The YMCA Wellness Studio at Mt Gravatt offers INDOOR sessions from 6am every weekday, so there’s no excuse for not exercising on those cold, wet, dark mornings.Classes run throughout the day and into the night, so no

worries if you’re not a morning person. Visit our website www.ymcawellness.com.au for more info on our programs and also our class timetable. See our ad on the front page for this month’s membership offer. You save $75. Call the studio on 3349 8686

to book your free session to experience the YMCA’s approach to health and fitness.

Our private studio is located at 52 Freda Street, Upper Mt Gravatt. Next door to Southside Sport & Community Club.

Second last key turns out a winnerthe Fiesta is very economical and nippy and I love the six-speed gearbox. It also was a nice touch that you can select your own colour.

“I have had a pleasure driving it the past three weeks and it’s a good, little zippy car that would suit a X or Y Generation.”In association with Bryan Byrt

Ford at Upper Mt Gravatt, the second Fiesta was given away on May 27 with the final draw for the Fiesta Zetec on Saturday, June 23.

WOULD life be easier if you were not so angry?Do you get angry and uptight? How do you deal with these feelings?Mt Gravatt Community Centre’s manage Your Anger classes could provide the answer. SOUTHSIDE Sport and Community Club has received a flood of applications for its Community Benefit Fund Grants. The committee has received a total of 78 applications valued at $195,000, an all-time record, for the grants.Grants ranging from a minimum of $250 up to $4000 are available under the scheme, which is now in its seventh year.“Unfortunately we do not have enough in the budget to cater for all of these, so quite a number of organisations will be disappointed,” said committee member Kevin Schneidewin.“Where possible we have tried to support smaller local organisations that have not applied before. They do not generally have access to government funds.“It is quite disheartening for our

sub-committee to go through the process of elimination. We would much rather make awards to all who qualify, however we endeavour to give to as many as possible by stretching the funds by making partial grants .”The full club committee will consider recommendations and finalise the grants on May 28. Recipients will be notified shortly after and awards will be made at a morning tea on a date to be fixed next month. The scheme is designed to provide financial assistance to charitable and community organisations operating in the local area, including postcodes 4122, 4121, 4109 and 4113.More than $4 million has been distributed to local community and sporting organisations by Southside since the club’s inception.

THE Team FatBoyz entry in the Rio Tinto Ride To Conquer Cancer tour on August 18-19 is making every post a winner. The team, which has featured prominently in Southside Community News and has raised more than $50,000 so far, has secured a major sponsor in McKays Solicitors and now will all sport team jerseys.“We are not competitive but it is a nice reward for all the effort people have put in,” a team spokesman said.“Our trivia night at St Matthews Anglican Church Hall at Holland Park on May 12 went well. We sold all available seats and raised about $3000 and managed to have some fun as well.”The team’s biggest and final event is also shaping up well after the Queensland Youth Orchestra allowed it to use their concert hall at the Old Museum Building free of charge on Saturday, July 14.International violinist Atilla Sautov has donated his services for the classical concert of Vivaldi’s complete Four Seasons, which also will feature FatBoyz team member Kate McCombe on flute. The team is hoping to sell 350 tickets. For details contact Kate on 0413 997858 or Warren on 0410 437836.Most of the team participated in the Ipswich 100, which started at the UQ campus in Ipswich and travelled west via Rosewood, Peaks Crossing and finished at the university. Most of the team did the 100km event but a couple

of members did the 100-mile ride. Most team members have been doing practice rides each weekend of about 100km.On the medical front, inspirational captain Warren Mah is recovering from his most recent lung operation and is back on his feet.Another team member Kris Palmer has just had another bowel operation and is in hospital, but team members believe the operation went well and hope he is back on his feet soon.Brisbane Roar FC has donated a signed and glass framed A-League champions jersey for Team FatBoyz to auction on e-bay.Roar became the first Australian club to win back-to-back championships by beating Perth Glory 2-1 at Suncorp Stadium on April 22. Two years running, Brisbane Roar have risen from the brink of defeat to snatch the title within the final minutes of the season. Professionally framed, the jersey has been signed by the all the premiership-winning players and coaches. Don't miss out on owning this great piece of sporting memorabilia from this history-making football team. All proceeds will go to QIMR, one of the largest cancer research institutes in Australia, the charity so the group wants to maximise what we can get for this brilliant piece of sports memorabilia.Boggo Road Bike Hub has donated some custom fitted bike shoes and pedals to auction while a local artist also has donated a painting for auction.

Trivia night goes well

ACCESS Outreach is best known for its street vans, however over the past year its Adopt A Pensioner scheme has come to the fore. With bases at Mansfield and now Darra, founder Pastor Russell Witham is stunned by the hardship that many of our elder citizens are enduring.“We have dealt with thousands of pensioners over the past year who are suffering a lot financially,” Russell said.“We are handing out numerous food parcels and fruit and vegetables every week. A lot of the pensioners are relying on us more than ever. It has gone from zero to 100 in the Adopt A

Pensioner program.“We used to deliver but now people are coming to us every Wednesday. They want food and we provide a good variety of fruit and vegetables.“And I’m not talking about the disadvantaged. I’m talking about the good old Australian who is over 70 who are finding it hard to manage financially.“They are telling us that their money doesn’t go as far as it used to. And we were fortunate too that students from the Australian Catholic University put on a sausage sizzle one morning as their breakfast.”

Another Access centre has been opened at the old Anglican church in Livingstone Street at Darra, which is open on Wednesdays.“We find at Darra that we are receiving quite a few younger people, many of whom are disabled or with mental issues,” said Russell, who has led this ground-breaking ministry since 1994. “We are always looking for helpers and anyone interested can contact me on 0415 467137.“We also are in need of children’s clothing so if there are people out there who can help out in this area that would be great.”

Community groups receive funding

Pensioners doing it tough

A NUMBER of Southside community groups have been given a financial boost by the State Government, with more than $130,000 in funding allocated from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The fund uses taxes from Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, Keno and gaming machines to pay out grants of up to $35,000 to Queensland community organisations.Member for Greenslopes, Ian Kaye, said the money was given to

grassroots community groups to assist with their programs and services.“The State Government supports the valuable work being done by not-for-profit organisations and recognises the significant and vital contributions they make to the state,” Mr Kaye said.“The GCBF is a way the Government can extend a helping hand to ensure these local community programs and projects continue.”Mr Kaye congratulated the successful applicants and said he

was looking forward to working with local groups in achieving their goals.One-off grants of up to $35,000 are given to approved not-for-profit organisations to help them provide community services or activities that benefit the community. The GCBF has four annual funding rounds and they must be received from Queensland-based organisations. The closing dates for applications are February 28, May 31, August 31 and November 30.

EACH year, increasing numbers of on and off road motorbikes, all-terrain vehicles, scooters and mini bikes are falling victim to crime.Motorcycles are particularly difficult to protect due to their ease of portability, the high demand for parts and poor identification. As a result, motorcycle thefts now amount to one in 10 of all stolen vehicles. Six out of 10 motorcycles are stolen from homes.• Newer model motorcycles make

up the majority of thefts• Motorcycle sales have increased

by 70 per cent over the past five years.

• The majority of motorcycles sales are for recreational use, potentially increasing the number of bikes stolen for parts.

• Those with an engine capacity of between 201 and 250cc are most commonly stolen, followed by bikes less than 50cc, such as scooters.

• About 50 per cent of total motorcycle sales are of off-road bikes and less than half of these bikes are registered. This makes theft of off-road motorbikes particularly problematic as they are not affected by the registration inspection practices that have been developed for registered vehicles.

MOTORCYCLESECURITYTIPSParkwisely• When commuting, park in well-

lit areas and use designated motorcycle parking areas or anchorage points where possible.

• Research suggests that over half of all motorcycles are stolen from residential locations. When at home, try to park behind lockable gates or in a locked garage. Alternatively, secure your bike by locking it to an immovable object or anchorage.

Secureyourbike• Be sure to secure your

motorcycle using the steering lock.

• Also use a manual locking device such as a disc lock, U-lock or chain and padlock.

• Consider installing an engine immobiliser to ensure the bike cannot be driven away.

Purchasesmartly• Be sure to consider security

features when purchasing your motorcycle. Ask your dealer what sort of security the manufacturer has adopted to help you make an informed decision.

MEMBERS of the Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed have been lending a hand to a project initiated by Lions Club and supported by White Lady Funerals. Over the past month, members have been scrounging in drawers and searching dark cupboards for old pairs of eyeglasses, sunglasses and hearing aids to bring to a donation box supplied by White Lady Funerals. This box has overflowed several times with well over 100 items donated already and more seeing

the light of day at every meeting. The donations are sent to the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre at Redcliffe. From there they are farmed out to a couple of prisons where prisoners check, clean and carry out minor repairs. Then they are sent to Third World countries and given to people who need help with their sight. Lions were an initial sponsor of Fred Hollows and this is seen to be following in his footsteps.

Shed members enthusiastically support this project as it involves no cash, tidies up the drawers and cupboards, recycles a very useful commodity, provides a worthwhile activity for those who have a bit of time on their hands, benefits those who need it most and raises the profile of Australia in remote parts of the world. If you would like to contribute, there is a collection box at the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club. They would rather that you did not bring the cases.

MOUNT Gravatt Kindergarten is collecting specially marked Pauls Collecta Caps from milk bottle containers (2 litre and above) for a fund-raising project to provide new homes for gliders. As the land next door to the kindergarten was cleared for the new unit development on Shire Rd (going up to the Mt Gravatt Lookout), brushtail possums Trichosurus vulpecula, birds and possibly gliders lost their trees and hollows for nesting in.Kindergarten staff found dead

possum joeys in the playground most likely as a result of territorial disputes as their habitat suddenly shrank. The kindergarten has been collecting the milk caps since last year to purchase and install nesting boxes from Hollow Log Homes. Kindergarten families are donating their caps, but if anyone else from the local community would like to donate theirs to our association, the organisation would be grateful. The entrance to the kindergarten is next to 23 Gosford St.

Mt Gravatt Kindergarten is a valued mountain neighbour, sharing a boundary with the Gertrude Petty Place Bushcare site.Mt Gravatt Environment Group is proud to promote this fundraising initiative which aims to restore vital nest hollows for wildlife. Most trees of Mt Gravatt Reserve are relatively young, having suffered from farming and tree felling. Nest hollows typically start forming once trees are 100 years old so there is a critical shortage of hollows within the habitat.

A COMPETITION that has been running for a number of years has again begun for 2012.Poinciana Challenge is designed for new bowlers and those who have played in Division six pennant competition or lower the previous year. Mt Gravatt Bowls Club is administering the competition for the second year running, looking after matters such as taking club nominations, arranging the draw

and posting the results on a weekly basis on both the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club and Gateway District Bowls Association websites. Mt Gravatt will also host the finals at the conclusion of the rounds. It is widely considered that this competition is an excellent entry level into the wider competitive environment of competitions such as pennant bowls and other interclub games.

Many newer bowlers have played in a social environment before entering the Poinciana Challenge and appreciate the opportunity of the Challenge. Competition commenced on Saturday, April 14 and is played at 1pm each Saturday in two sections. Mr Bruce Black, a long-term Mt Gravatt member, is administering the competition on behalf of the club.

FEDERAL Member for Moreton Graham Perrett has applauded the Government’s commitment to reform Australia’s privacy laws.Attorney-General Nicola Roxon announced the major legislative reforms to the Privacy Act aimed at better protecting personal information and giving new enforcement powers to the Privacy Commissioner.Mr Perrett said the announcement was great news for Moreton locals fed up with annoying salesmen.“The key changes include clearer and tighter regulation of the use of personal information for direct marketing, extending privacy protections to unsolicited information and making it easier for consumers to access and correct information held about them,” Mr Perrett said.“It will also enhance the powers of the Privacy Commissioner to improve the commissioner’s

ability to resolve complaints, conduct investigations and promote privacy compliance.“Thanks to the introduction of these changes, the Government is helping to protect the privacy of families in Moreton.”Mr Perrett said the Government would modernise credit reporting arrangements.“These changes will provide much more power to locals to be able to access and, if necessary, correct their credit reports,” he said. The changes will be achieved through amendments to the Privacy Act 1988, which will be introduced into the Parliament in the winter sitting. Recycling grants through to Keep Australia BeautifulKEEP Australia Beautiful Queensland is calling for grant applications from local communities to implement local beverage container recycling projects. The Keep Australia Beautiful grants, funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation, are open to all communities across Australia and range from $3000 to $10,000 for projects that will result in a measurable increase in beverage container recycling. Applications are open to community groups, local associations, schools, small to medium enterprises and local government authorities and will be awarded to: • Projects that address the

specific issue of beverage container recycling and its by-products

• Practical local solutions that can be used as examples for others and leave a legacy

• Projects that do not duplicate existing recycling activities

• Projects that result in measurable volumes of recycled materials.

A proven ability to implement suitable projects, such as those who have participated in the Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Communities Awards, incorporating the Tidy Towns and Sustainable Cities programs, will also be taken into account. In larger communities, this may mean infrastructure for events or for special venues such as large retail centres, sporting venues or education centres. In smaller communities, it may mean assistance with transport or processing to overcome remote location or dispersed population. In 2011, The Coca-Cola Foundation provided $170,004 for the grants program to encourage away from home recycling with a total of 23 projects, representing

all states and territories. Applications for the 2012 grants funding close on Friday, June 15 with successful applicants confirmed at the end of next month. For more information and to register for an application pack, visit www.kabq.org.au or call David Curtin, organisational development manager, on 3252 2886 or email [email protected]

STRETTON MP Freya Ostapovitch went back to school last month to play the role of principal for a day at Calamvale Community College, one of the most popular activities of State Education Week.Mrs Ostapovitch was looking forward to seeing the challenges facing our school principals and the day to day operations of a modern day school. “For some, the memory of being in a principal’s office could be a bit daunting, but this is a great day to be part of your local school community, see first-hand the hard work frontline principals, teachers, teacher aides and support staff provide to our kids”, Mrs Ostapovitch said. She was not alone in her endeavour as Education, Training and Employment Minister John-Paul Langbroek led by example and returned to his old school Sunnybank State High where he was school captain in 1978.“I am proud of being a product of Queensland’s state school system and State Education Week is an

opportunity for us all to recognise the quality education our state schools deliver for Queensland students,” Mr Langbroek said.State Education Week was an annual series of events and programs celebrating state school education across Queensland.

A GREAT time was had by all at the Southside Rockets Swim Club end of season trophy presentation day. After each club swimmer received their trophies and Cooper Brien and Zara Packenas were crowned the club champions for 2011-12, the end of season party was a splash with the children enjoying a pool disco dance party at their Mt Gravatt location, the Sam Riley Swim School pool.“The Southside Rockets is such a family friendly club and the fortnightly club nights have a lovely atmosphere” says Vicki Blyth, one of the Southside Rocket parents. “We are really lucky that the Sam Riley Swim School lets us use their facilities for club nights. It keeps the costs of club membership affordable.” The Southside Rockets Swim Club is a division 4 club, catering for swimming abilities from 12.5 m races to members representing the club at the state titles. For more information regarding sign-on for the Southside Rockets Swim Club 201-13 season or to

join the squads at the Sam Riley Swim School located at the corner of Wecker and Dawson Roads at Mt Gravatt, contact their head

coach Stephen Ballhause on 0410 817503 or check out the Southside Rockets website at www.southsiderockets.com.au

MOUNT Gravatt Hawks believe they have turned the corner after picking up wins in their past two outings. “We got a good win last week against Brisbane Force at Brisbane Force after our third game in 10 days, having to play make up games due to the wet weather we have had earlier this year,” said club president Vince Sciacca.“After a going up 1-0 against Force, they were able to get the equaliser against the run of play. We peppered the Force goal and we should have been up by several goals as Force was denied possession. “A sloppy tackle by the Force keeper resulted in a penalty with us taking the lead 2-1, only to concede just before half time, going in at 2-2. Second half was all Mt Gravatt and we grabbed an early goal, and with several opportunities going begging, we finished the game 3-2.”The Hawks then played host to Ipswich City at Dittmer Park. Once again they dominated much of the play but only managed to put the single goal of the match away in the first half to win the game 1-0. The three points were welcomed especially since the club is nursing a number of injuries with top team goalkeeper Ben Sciacca out with a broken hand from the match against Logan Lightning and Justin Rappolt struggling with a torn muscle. However the Hawks welcome back Michael Bone after being away for the past few weeks.“The football that we have been playing have been of a high quality and with a young squad we are happy with how we are travelling as we gain experience and develop a tenacity to never say die,” Mr Sciacca said.“We have felt in control of most games and our losses this year have been by a solitary goal. In the wet weather make-up games, we clearly dominated our opposition, but we need to put away our chances and that is something we have been lacking. “We were in positions to take early

leads against Logan Lightning and Pine Rivers United, but our failure to close out the game allowed both teams to sneak in late goals with the Hawks going down 2-1 in both games.”He said the wins in the past two rounds would give the players plenty of confidence and coach Jeff Hogan was pleased with the style of football being played, albeit frustrated that the results had not gone their way.“But we are hoping that we have turned the corner and come September we will be playing finals football,” Mr Sciacca said. The Hawks, together with the Brisbane Rangers Supporters Club, will bring Rangers Soccer Academy to Mt Gravatt. During the July school holidays from July 2-6, Rangers Academy will conduct a clinic limited to 120 players with six coaches flying from Scotland to conduct the clinic in Rangers only clinic in Brisbane. The clinic is from 10am to 3pm each day with an hour for lunch. An early bird fee of $250 has been extended until the end of this month. With the weather gods shining on them over the past month, the Hawks small sided football (under 6 to under 11) has continued its action for season 2012.On the mornings at Klumpp Road and our local opposition clubs, see all of our boys and girls enjoy themselves as they partake in modified games of soccer to accommodate their various age groups.Director Graham Mapri said that with goals not officially counted in small sided football, results are inconsequential but the level of talent shown by our club across all ages is deemed to be of a very good standard and something that the club is very proud of.Training has continued with some minor disruptions but all of our boys and girls have gelled together well and are benefiting from their wonderful volunteer coaches and managers whom the club appreciate greatly for generously putting up their time to develop our players.

MT Gravatt NEAFL coach Andrew Mellor is nothing if not a realist. He knows his team is running off the pace, sitting equal eighth in the 10-strong competition. However he is buoyed by three victories out of the past five matches.‘We had a less than ideal start in our first four matches,” he said. “We are behind the eight ball in trying to make the semi-finals and there is a lot of work in front of us.“Luckily we are getting some players back from injury but we still have Don Barry and Craig Malone on the long-term injury list.”After downing Sydney Hills Eagles by 26 points last month in the Foxtel Cup, Mt Gravatt will line up against high-flying West Australian side Claremont at Carrara in the middle of July.“We will have our work cut out getting around them,” Mellor said. "They are the powerhouse of WA football and in fine form so we just have to do our best.

“My grandfather was a life member at Claremont and there are strong family ties there, but I don’t think that will be of any help. One plus is that they have to travel.”The Vultures scored four players in the Queensland side that played New South Wales/ACT last month at Southport with Nathan Gilliland, Gavin Grose, Chris Smith and Luke Scott pulling on the maroon with

Mellor an assistant coach. The rep tally was the second highest of any NEAFL club.In the curtain-raiser, Mt Gravatt’s Daniel Mowat was named in a 24-man under 21 squad to also take on NSW/ACT.“It was a good effort by Daniel to make the squad and we hope he puts his best foot forward,” Mellor said. v
