Consists of a self-containedbody of water, which iscontinually filtered andchemically treated.

It is not drained, cleaned orrefilled after each individualuse

Correct water treatmentensures that the spa poolwater is safe and clean tobathe in.

Terms used for specifictypes of spa pool are

jacuzzi, whirlpool, hot tuband hot spa

Disinfection is thedestruction of micro organisms, reducingthem to a level notharmful to health

It is essential that anadequate disinfectantresidual is maintained inthe water at all times and

that the kill time formicro-organisms is rapid

Spa water must be freefrom Coliforms,Pseudomonas,Staphylococcus and FaecalStreptococcus in 100ml of

water At ph values of less than 7,

the water is acidic and maycause eye irritation andcorrosion of pool parts

At ph above 7 it is morealkaline and chlorinebecomes less effective indestroying bacteria.

The pool water must bemaintained within the range

    of 7.2-7.6

hlorine This is one of the most widely

used disinfectants forswimming pools and must beregularly measured to controlthe chlorination process.High levels of chlorine

contaminants may make theeyes sting, which used to be acommon complaint whenpeople used public swimmingbaths.

    Bromine tablets slowly

dissolve in water and areused in the disinfection of

spa water and other watertreatments. As they are intablet form they can bedispensed into the waterusing an erosion feeder orbrominator.

They are less likely toirritate the skin the same aschlorine and are more suitedto the higher temperatures ofSpa pools. Regularmeasurement of brominetreated water is essential, as

twice the quantity of bromineis needed to achieve the sameresults as chlorine.

. An Ozone generatordestroys bacteria andviruses in the waternaturally through Ozone. The advantages of thismethod are that there is

no smell and less chanceof any irritation to theskin. It is also lesscorrosive than chlorine,so wont damage theequipment or allow any

scale build up around thepool and fixtures.

Water testing is done in accordance with thechemicals used to ensure that it is safe andeffective and to determine whether the water iscorrosive, scale forming or nicely balanced.

A Langelier Saturation index is used to calculate: Calcium hardness in the water 75 to 150 mg

    per litre

PH range of 7.2 to 7.6, this is important as itaffects the power of the disinfectant

Alkalinity 100 to 150 mg per litre Temperature ideally between 27 30 C in

commercial pools and 34 37 C in Spa pools

Check the temperature of the pool water regularly using a

thermometer. Take a sample of water in a sample tube to test the pH,

alkalinity and chlorine/bromine levels By adding a DPD 1 tablet to the water to calculate the free

chlorine concentration, you will see a colour change whichcan either be measured against a coloured metric disk orby an instrument into which the sample tube is placed andby simply pressing a button the concentration isimmediately displayed on a screen

Phenol red tablet can be added to the water sample tomeasure the PH level in the same way as testing for thechlorine.

Alkalinity, Ozone levels and calcium hardness can also bemeasured the same way using tablet count tests.

It is the high temperature of thewater in Spa pools and its re-circulation, which is said to be anideal environment for thebacteria. Symptoms of thedisease include aching muscles, tiredness, headaches, cough andfever. The infection can betreated with antibiotics but therehave been fatalities as a result ofthe disease. This underlines thenecessity for the higheststandards of hygiene to be

    practised throughout the spaenvironment

This should consist of the following maintenanceprocedures:

Water sample to test the Ph, alkalinity, chemical levels andcalcium hardness

Drain out the spa water and clean all the equipment, pooland filters with appropriate cleaning products for a Spa

Check all equipment filtration, treatment plants andequipment settings

Check all pool maintenance records and report any areasof concern

    Re-fill the Spa

Check chemical levels in the treatment plant and re-supplyas necessary Check water temperature

All water treatmentequipment apart from theSpa pool and swimmingpool should be switchedoff at the mains andaccording to

manufacturers guidelinesA switch in the plant room

should switch off spa pooland any other poolfacilities. The water filtersystem may be left onover night.

Some Spas may test thewater again at the end ofthe day to make sure thewater levels are correct forthe following day.

    Any water on the floors

should be removed so thatthey are dry some Spafloors may be cleaned witha high pressure hose first, depending on whattreatments have been

carried out in the areaAll baths/showers/wet tablesurfaces should becleaned with theappropriate cleaner
