Taught by professional artists who help you imagine possibilities and demonstrate processes and techniques characteristic of certain materials, these classes are designed for success AND you create art that you proudly display or wear.

ArtStart’s MissionThe mission of ArtStart is to inspire artistic creativity and illuminate the connections among people, ideas, and the environment through quality arts education experiences for all.

About ArtStartArtStart is located in the Mac-Groveland neighborhood of Saint Paul and primarily serves the 7-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. Founded in 1988, the goals of the organization are to:

Provide integrated arts and education opportunities that engender knowledge and appreciation of art, culture and the environment among teachers and students in schools and summer programs;

Model good stewardship of the environment by recycling materials for creative use throughout the 7-country Metro area;

Enable young people and families, especially those without adequate prior access, to participate in artmaking through classes, opportunities at community festivals, partnerships with schools and social service agencies; and,

Support artists’ creativity and capacity to link art with environmental, cultural and educational issues by providing materials, employment, training and commissions.

All of ArtStart’s core programs and special projects support the mission, and include a unique blending of human creativity in the arts, and reusing materials to contribute to awareness and protection of the environment.

Using the Common Map as Art WEDNESDAY, MAY 30 • 6-8 PM Use a discarded map and turn it into a colorful work of art! Focusing on the lines and shapes that are most interesting to you on the map–a highway, a river, or another boundary–you use glue, oil pastel, and glittery mylar to create an abstract work of art.

Magic in the Garden TUESDAY, MAY 8 • 6-8 PMCreate a magical space where fairies can live and play–a miniature garden! Come learn about the history and meaning behind the symbol of the Tree of Life with artist Jeanette Dickinson. Then using a wire construction method, create your own circular pendent Tree of Life. Japanese Shibori WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28 • 4-6 PMWork with artist Jeanette Dickinson and learn about the ancient Japanese art form of shibori. First hand paint a silk scarf. Then use shibori binding and dyeing techniques to create wearable art with a flair. Additional materials fee $10.

Suminagashi TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27 • 5-7 PMSuminagashi means floating ink in Japanese, in this class we will cover everything from the ancient technique of grinding ink using an ink stone to creating decorated paper by floating ink on water and send you off with a bunch of ideas on how to use your beautifully decorated papers.

Silk Screen PrintingJoin artist Jeanette Dickinson and learn the art of silk screen printing–an iconic look associated with artist Andy Warhol. Learn the basic techniques of cutting stencils, preparing screens, and printing without a press. Bring a clean, washed 100% cotton T-shirt to print on.

Encaustic PaintingEncaustic painting is the art of painting with hot beeswax combined with dry pigments to create a painting medium. The paint is applied hot and makes for a dramatic layered image into which objects and photographs can be added. Work with artist Jeanette Dickinson to learn the process and techniques of encaustic painting.

Imagine giving yourself the gift of art. You choose the days that work best for you to explore materials and techniques that transform the white sheet of paper or canvas into a work of art from pen and ink to encaustic painting. ARTSTART’S ARTSCRAPS: An innovative concept that combines waste management with art making, ArtStart’s ArtScraps is a unique partnership with businesses and manufacturers, in which the organization collect scraps, overstock, factory rejects, and other items normally destined for the landfill. Products are on display, just like any other retail operation. The stock changes frequently, bringing new

surprises every week. Sample projects show how materials can be used, and an artist is available on-site to talk about project ideas. In 2016, ArtStart’s ArtScraps kept over 60,000 pounds of discards out of the waste stream.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES: If you want a creative, fun, memorable, rather trouble-free, birthday party, then try an ArtScraps Birthday Party. Our two-hour birthday party includes scrap invitations, the art project and a party favor bag for all participants to take home.

Parties are held on Saturdays and Sundays at ArtStart for ages 5 and up.

Cost: $185 for up to 10 children;$15/additional child. Limited to 12 children.

SCRAPMOBILE WORKSHOPSWe bring fabulous, funky, repurposed materials from ArtStart’s ArtScraps Materials Reuse Center to your site along with a message about the importance of the 3-R’s and art activities that spark the imagination.

Workshop topics include: Rube Goldberg’s Marble Machine; Hilarious Headpieces; Jewelry from Junk; Marvelous Mobiles; Inventor’s Workshop; Build Small; and, Junkosaurus to name a few.

MANY CULTURES/MANY VOICES WORKSHOPS Learn about other cultures, art forms, and celebrations while promoting our common bond as global citizens. Whenever possible, workshops are taught by artists from the culture who bring a wealth of cultural knowledge to each experience. Besides helping youth create exciting artistic products, many artists share artifacts, clothing, and their own artwork. Workshop topics include: African Gris Gris; Gees Bend Quilters; The Art of Remembrance: The Offrenda; Japanese Folk Art Traditions; Molas Panama Style; Spirits of the Arctic Circle; and, Folk Arts of India, plus many others.

ART AND NATURE WORKSHOPSTaught by naturalist Larry Wade and artist Jeanette Dickinson, these workshops promote environmental stewardship and learning about nature through hands-on artmaking. Some workshop topics include: Pollinator Particulars; Give A Hoot; Spirit Rocks; Critters of the Pond and Stream; and Follow the Tracks to name a few.

A SPECIAL SUMMER OPPORTUNITY FOR TEENS!

River EcoJourneys: Between Water and Sky JUNE 11-JULY 6, 2018 (NO JULY 4 SESSION) 8:30 AM-3:30 PM DAILY ArtStart’s River EcoJourneys: Between Water and Sky is a four-week summer mentorship program in which 15 youth work side-by-side with professional naturalists and artists-a composer, poet and visual artists at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge to explore the issue of climate change.

The goal of Between Water and Sky is to design and create a public art work that integrates environmental learning with composed sound sources, poetry and art and serves as a commentary on climate change. The public art work is sited at the Refuge. Applicants need to fill out an application, provide a letter of recommendation, and attend an interview. The stipend for the 4-week mentorship is up to $500.
