I.D.Spassky was born on

August 2, 1926 in the town

of Noginsk, Moscow region.

In 1941 he joined the

1st Moscow special

Navy school in Baku.

After his graduation from

the Dzerzhinsky Naval

Engineering College in 1949

and a brief term of service

in the Navy on cruiser

«Frunze» which was under

construction in the Black

sea Fleet , I.D.Spassky was

deputed to the shipbuilding

industry to participate

in the development of

new submarines.

Since 1950 Igor D.Spassky’s

life and activities have been

inseparably connected with

submarine design.

Participating in the work on the

development of nuclear missile

carrying submarines of the

first and the second

generations, he gradually

climbed up through all design

engineering ranks from a

designer in CDB-18

(now CDB ME «Rubin») to the

Chief Engineer of that Design

Bureau. In 1974, I.D.Spassky

headed the Central Design

Bureau for Marine Engineering

«Rubin», first as Chief Designer

and in 1983 as General

Designer of the enterprise.

In this important position

I.D.Spassky displayed his talent

of an organizer, designer and

scientist to the full extent.

He has developed several fundamental tech-nical solutions which ensure both high ef-ficiency and safety of submarines and their nuclear plants operation; determined the scope of optimum automation of submarine control, principally new technological meth-ods of submarine construction have been developed which considerably reduce pe-riod and cost of construction and increase their combat characteristics. I.D.Spassky’s contribution to science and technology has been implemented in the construction of about 200 nuclear and diesel-electric submarines of various projects. I.D.Spassky was a pioneer in the sphere of system design of weapon instead of indi-

vidual, poorly coordinated development of different types of weapons. A bright ex-ample of a new approach was the deve-lopment of the «Typhoon» system to which I.D.Spassy made tremendous engineering and organizational contribution.Well substantiated and firm position of I.D.Spassky was determining in the pres-ervation of diesel-electric submarines in our Navy and in the development of a fam-ily of low-noise and highly efficient diesel-electric submarines which won the highest reputation in the world market. In 2001, a unique international project on salvage, transportation and docking of nu-clear submarine cruiser «Kursk» has been

production, high-speed railway and public electric transport, the latest models of equipment and technology in the field of ecology and renewable energy sources.Today the name of Igor Dmitrievich Spassky – an outstanding scientist, prominent spe-cialist in the field of submarine construc-tion, the most authoritative leader of the industry – is widely known in our country and far beyond it.As an acknowledgement of outstanding services and contribution of I.D.Spassky, Doctor of Technical Sciences (1978), Pro-fessor (1984), to the science, his high authority in the field of shipbuilding, he was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences (AS of the USSR – RAS) in 1987. He is a member of various Councils: the Scientific Council on wave processes

successfully implemented under the per-sonal scientific and technical leadership by I.D.Spassky.At present, he leads and personally greatly contributes to the construction of subma-rines of the new generation with different types of power plants (nuclear and non-nuclear).It is thanks to the efforts of I.D.Spassky that a narrow specialized design bureau has been converted to a modern multipro-file enterprise. On the basis of the state-of-the-art military technologies several im-portant prospective conversion directions have been implemented at the enterprise, among them is the development of ice-re-sistant marine platforms for oil and gas

of RAS, the Commission on entrepreneur-ship and competitiveness under the Chair-man of the Government, the Scientific Council under the Military-and–Industrial Commission, the Expert Council on the issues of legislative support for the de-velopment of the defense and industrial complex under the Chairman of the Feder-ation Council of the Federal Assembly RF, the Council on Science and Technology and the Marine Council under the Govern-ment of Saint-Petersburg. I.D.Spassky is the Chairman of the Thesis Council of CDB ME «Rubin», which under his leadership became the centre of training scientific personnel where more than 100 engineers got scientific degrees, 10 Doctors of Sci-ences inclusive.

All the working activities of I.D.Spassky are inseparably connected with Saint-Petersburg. Having inexhaustible energy and high level of personal culture, Igor Dmitrievich has greatly contributed to the preservation and increasing of the spir-itual and cultural inheritance of the city. He directly and actively participated in the works pertaining to: • Restoration of A.S.Puskin’s memorial apartments and Literature Cafe of Wolf and Beranger;• Complete overhaul of Naval St.Nicholas Cathedral of the Epiphany;• Restoration of the church of St.Basil the Great in the small town of Lodeinoe Pole and the church of St.John the Pre-

curser, XII century, in Staraya Ladoga;• Establishment of high class international business centers on Nevsky prospect and Obvodny Kanal, construction of the first Oceanarium in Russia.I.D.Spassky supervised the development of design and construction of the muse-um-monument «Submarine D-2», monu-ment «Glory of the Russian Navy» in the honour of 300 years of the Russian Navy, monument «From Dolphin to Typhoon» which served to the decoration of the city on the Neva river. It is on his initiative that permanent help is rendered to some cultural centers, children’s, medical and sport institutions. As the acknowledge-ment of services of I.D.Spassky, member of the Public Council of St.Petersburg,

he was awarded the title «Freeman of Saint-Petersburg». Energetic and fruitful productive, scientific, organizational activities of Igor Dmitriev-ich Spassky have been acknowledged by awarding him Lenin Prize (1965), State Prize of the USSR (1983), title of Hero of Socialist Labour (1978). I.D.Spassky has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, Order of the October Revolution, Order of the Red Banner of Labour, the II-degree Order for the Services to the Motherland, 14 medals, many orders and highest badg-es of various industrial and public organiza-tions, the Russian Orthodox Church. As an international acknowledgement of outstanding services of academician

I.D.Spassky in the development of world and Russian science, the International Astronomical Union by the decision of the Committee on giving names to small-er bodies of the Solar system gave the name «Spassky» to one of the smaller planets. The fruits of the versatile activities, high international authority of Igor Dmitrievi-ch Spassky made him one of the leaders among top leaders of enterprises of the defense-and-industrial complex of Russia. At present, I.D.Spassky continues his activities as the Head of Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering «Rubin». Under his leadership prospective programs of the bureau development have been adopted and implemented, large scope of reconstruction of working premises,

engineering circuits and communications was undertaken in «Rubin», design tools for developing objects for various purposes have been constantly improved. With unabated interest I.D.Spassky watch-es the development of submarine con-struction in the world, analyzes the trends in foreign submarine fleets, is at the head of works in the bureau on research design of prospective submarines for the Rus-sian Navy. The character of I.D.Spassky does not allow him to be limited to only one sphere of activity. He is full of creative schemes which he seeks to implement for the benefit of Russia.
