Our President-Elect, Alex Monroe Shouted the meeting to order at precisely 7:30 and hilarity soon ensued. Our ROTD, Sheila Henry, went off book and instead of talking about her practice talked about a gathering of friends at her house that discussed what they like to spend their money on. Sheila loves her dog Zoe and spends money on her, restaurants and her new massage chair. She also regaled us with a meandering chronology of a long weekend in Ashland, Oregon…where she saw plays on Shakespeare, musicals and an unusual play I think entitled “Lassie and the Lesbians.”

Cynthia Villas introduced our new Rotary scholar Yishak Kassa Tefferi who is here with his wife Rahel Kefyalew Tsegaye and their daughter, Elenathan Yishak Kassa. I’m sure that the longer they are here in San Diego, the shorter their nicknames will become.

We sang Happy Birthday (poorly, I might add) to Andrea and Joe and then the announcements began. The art show in Chula Vista

was attended by about 10 Rotarians who bought stuff and that raised almost $2800 for the club…pretty cool. Jan Percival-Lipscomb and her daughter Shanney did a last minute trip to Baton Rouge and did volunteer work in the aftermath of the flooding at an animal shelter. You could tell that she was really moved by the experience and soon there will be a plane coming to San Diego full of animals who need homes…very cool stuff !

Linda Stouffer reminded us that the annual fundraiser will be held on April 22nd and to start lining up sponsors and donations asap. Jim Davies, reminded us all about the orphanage work project in Mexico on October 1st. Dave Wiegman chimed in that we would be “painting some orphans” which may have to get approval to do! Later he told us that he has iron rich blood that is excellent food for feeding roses. Did I mention that the meeting was weirder than normal? We also will be painting fire lanes on October 29th up off Nobel. Sandi Rimer mentioned

the Rotary Foundation Hornblower cruise will

take place on November 5th.

Many of the high 5’s centered around welcoming back Fary, Jan and Shanney and Alex and Barbro Kirkpatrick from all their humanitarian adventures. It’s nice to get the band back together! Dave and his iron rich blood got his 3rd hole in one earlier in the week!

Our speaker was David Wellis, the CEO of the san Diego Blood Bank, which we soon learned, services all of Southern California. As we all know, they do great work and are always in need of volunteers and Blood (even Dave’s).

Alex closed the meeting with a side splitting (not so much) joke about the 10 things you are not supposed to do when donating blood. Soon after the meeting he was seen to enroll in a crash course in the Kohl-Fritschner School of joke telling. We hope he graduates prior to assuming the gavel next year!

24 years, Sheila. They have three children: Heather 22, Houston 21, and Hallyn 19. They also have a grandson Caden, who is almost 4.
