H ealth care accessibility and affordability have been hot topics lately, in large part because

new state and federal regulations have begun to go into effect nationwide. Though challenges exist virtually everywhere, Iowans, in general, are better off than people in most other states when it comes to health care. However, given the state’s aging demographics, the ability of people to receive the care they need later in life is more important than ever. “Home health used to be in the background and not talked about much, but now it’s coming to the forefront for how people are being cared for,” says Tom Moreland, owner and CEO of Spirit Home Healthcare, a faith-based care provider in Clive with 30 employees. Spirit Home Healthcare, which serves clients in Dallas, Jasper, Polk and Warren counties, offers both skilled home health care, and private duty/custodial care services. All told, Moreland says, at any given time, his company is taking care of more than 100 patients, 70 percent of whom are covered under Medicare. And given the aging of Iowa’s (and the nation’s) population, he says that growth in the home health industry should be expected, given that millions of people will become 65 years and older in the coming years. “We’re now seeing a huge demographic of people who are going to need care, and they’d prefer to be cared for in their homes. So the need for home health is going to grow for the next 30 years – no matter what the economy is doing – because of the aging demographic,” says Moreland, who adds that he is already seeing an influx of new home care franchises and out-of-state providers coming into the Iowa market. Even with plenty of care choices already available, Moreland says taking a close look at what extra services are provided and how care is delivered

are among the important things to consider when deciding which home care agency to use. “It’s really important to vet the home care provider, but that’s not always done, because it’s usually just the recommendation of the doctor or medical staff that people rely upon,” he says. In fact, Moreland believes people should talk to two or three providers before making a decision. As a part of this, he says you should ask providers about their ownership and the type of care they provide, and have them explain their mission and values. He says another good resource is to go online and

look at information and rankings provided at www.medicare.gov/homehealthcompare/search.html. When home health costs about $200 per day, as compared to the roughly $2,000 to $4,000 per day it can cost for stays in the intensive care unit of a hospital, it is no wonder more people are paying attention to what home health has to offer as a viable alternative to care in hospitals or nursing homes. “If you’ve never looked at home health, now is the time to do it, Moreland says. “It’s the wave of the future, but we’ve come full circle in realizing the best care is provided in the home.” v

D efining “luxury” is hard to do, because what counts as luxury depends on a person’s own

set of circumstances. An item that is considered luxurious by one person may not be all that extravagant to another. So what does luxury look like in Des Moines? And the river cruises not only go to bigger cities, but also smaller ones that are very historic,” explains Burtch, who says people like the access and exclusivity this type of travel offers. Other top travel trends Burtch mentioned include safaris, typically 10 to 14 days in duration, to places like South Africa or Zimbabwe,and “generational travel,” where grandparents spend significant sums of money to take the entire family (sons, daughters, grandchildren, etc.) to places like Hawaii or Walt Disney World for a vacation. “Our clients are looking for unique experiences. It’s not about spending money and just going somewhere. They want to use their money to get special access to something, or take private tours,” says Jody Valentine, who oversees marketing and sales at Allied Travel.
