This training will focus on planning for students who use assistive technology (AT) as they

move to new placement settings. We begin with the assumption that IEP teams have already

determined that a student with a disability requires AT and that the student has been using that

AT in the current educational setting. Although the principles of AT transition included in this

session are related directly to the transition planning that is a requirement for students 16 and

older in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004), the

processes and strategies discussed are generally appropriate for transition of AT users at any

age.

Tactual Symbol Systems: An Introduction - Children born with visual and multiple impairments or deaf blindness

face many challenges in developing a communication system and language. Typically these students need more

tangible forms of communication such as object symbols or tactual symbols before they can advance to more

standard forms of communication such as print, Braille, sign language or speech. This workshop will provide an

introduction to tactual symbols. Participants will learn why the use of these symbols is recommended, how to

determine when the student is ready for using them, and how to incorporate them throughout the student’s

instructional day. The lecture portion of the day will include video examples of these symbols being used. The last

portion of this day will include a make-and-take so that participants can begin to create these symbols for the

student. A working lunch will be provided for participants and their Special Education Directors to discuss the

possibility of follow up sessions for students using tactual symbols system during the 2011-2012 school year.

Do you have students who are hard to motivate? Do you want better working relationships

with your co-workers and the family members of your students? Come learn how the basic

principles of culture can help you better understand the how and the why people act the way

they do. . . Who knows, you might just learn a bit about YOURSELF in the process! It is the

intent of this training to help educators understand the diversity among cultures and how those

differences impact the teaching and learning cycle. You will discover an important principle;

culture is NOT tied to race or ethnicity. Culture affects how we communicate and process

information. Culture also affects our actions and reactions. This session is opened to educators
