‘Sandpiper Sanitarium’ opens for three daysAs Halloween approaches, ghoulish decorations are being mounted on front lawns, costumes are being carefully chosen and candy is accumulating in cupboards.

For Courtney Hogarth-Trafford and her family, however, the big night means a chance to both scare and care.

Plans include preparing their property on Sandpiper Drive for their upcoming “Vampires Through the Ages” haunted house featuring an outdoor graveyard, a “nice path” for the little ones, and a “naughty path” for the parents.

“The vampire theme organ music will set the scene upon entering, and coffins and candlelight will be aplenty,” says Hogarth-Trafford. “All volunteers will be dressed as everything from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Edward Cullen.”

But the family isn’t just upping the ante on costumes and scare tactics; this is also the first year they are raising money for charity.

“We have decided to make Canuck Place our choice charity as everyone involved are parents, and we are big Canucks fans and always see the telethon every year,” says Hogarth-Trafford. “Also, we are all fortunate to have healthy children, but some families in B.C. are not so lucky.”

This became clear after they had the chance to

tour the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice that will soon open its doors in Abbotsford.

“After seeing what they do, and how much they care, it now goes far beyond just a charity to us,” she says. “We honestly left feeling that we wished to win the lottery to help them out more than we are.”

With the help of neighbours Andy and Ruth Langton, who are building a massive haunted castle onto the garage, and the generous donations by local businesses towards the final tally, this year may be the start of a new tradition.

The new costume and prop shop Halloween Alley on Marshall Road has agreed to donate 10 per cent of all receipts to the cause, on behalf of whoever mentions the Canuck Place Haunted House at the till.

Opening night is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 30, with Tim Hortons giving out free hot chocolate and Timbits.

We have all spent more time than we’d like to admit soaking up the sun, indulged in an extra piece of chocolate cake and, on an occasion or two, forgone the recommended 8 hours of sleep.

A startling fact recently shared with me is that today’s youth is the first generation predicted to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. Childhood obesity, early onset diabetes, lack of exercise and processed foods all play a part in this grim statistic. I have no data to back this up, but my personal feeling is that one of the biggest contributors to the growing poor health of our youth is their lack of basic cooking skills, and I mourn the loss of making this essential life skill a mandatory high school course. Everyone must eat to sur-vive, and therefore everyone should be taught how to cook healthy food rather than rely on the prepared food and restaurant industry to fuel the bodies and brains of our future

leaders. However I’m encouraged by the growing trend of a few influ-ential TV chefs who are moving away from showcasing gourmet restaurant meals to teaching easier, hearty home cooking that anyone with a few basic skills can master. Jamie Oliver is one of my favorites, and the ease and cheekiness with which he “bangs together” a knockout meal is always a joy to watch. The tray bake recipe featured is similar to some-thing he’d throw into his wood fired backyard oven - simple, hearty ingre-dients, easily prepared, and the end result is a deli-cious and healthy home cooked meal even a rookie cook can master.

INGREDIENTS:8 Lepp’s British Banger sausages

(if substituting in a different sausage, choose one without a lot of distinct flavours)

1 tbsp Olive oil

4 Medium-sized Yukon Gold Potatoes, or 7-8 nugget potatoes

1 garlic bulb, separated into cloves, peeled & lightly bruised

4 Sprigs rosemary or 2 tbsp. fresh thyme leaves

3-4 Thick slices double smoked bacon or 100 gm pancetta, diced

2 Firm apples, cored & cut into wedges

1/4 cup White wine

2 Big handfuls baby spinach

INSTRUCTIONS:1. Preheat a large roasting pan in the oven to 425 degrees. Add the

sausages to the pan; drizzle with the oil. Roast for 10 minutes,

turning halfway.

2. Cut the potatoes into quarters. Transfer to a bowl with the garlic

cloves, the fresh rosemary or thyme, the diced bacon or pancetta

and apples; toss together.

3. After the 10 minutes, add the potato mixture and wine to the

sausages, in a single layer. Season with a little salt and lots of

black pepper

4. Return to the oven for 20-30 minutes, turning the sausages half-

way, until everything is cooked through and golden.

5. Remove from the oven, mix in the spinach and set aside for a

couple of minutes to wilt.

TRUTH: The centers for disease control and prevention recommends inoculation for everyone six months or older, including pregnant women. That protects them plus their new born during the first six months of life.

MYTH: I don’t need the flu shot. I have never had a flu shot.

TRUTH: The flu shot matters for you and the whole family. While it doesn’t offer a guarantee of 100% protection, chances are 99.99% that it won’t hurt you.

THE STARFISH PACK PROGRAM STORY

At the outset of the 2013-2014 school year, the Abbotsford Rotary Club met with the Abbotsford School District to determine the scope of need and the priority order of schools. It was determined that nearly 400 elementary school children throughout Abbotsford’s public schools depends on either an in-school breakfast and/or lunch program as their sole source of nutrition during a normal school day. THE PARABLE OF THE STARFISH

On the morning after a violent storm, the residents of a seaside village awoke to find their beach covered with hundreds of dying starfish which had washed ashore.

As the community gathered at the end of the beach, they spoke in hushed tones about the great sadness of the disaster. Suddenly, a young girl ran towards the beach and began to pick up the starfish one at a time, throwing them back into the water.

A village elder walked towards the young girl and kindly said, “Child, there are hundreds of starfish on this beach and this must be happening on other beaches up and down the coast. You must understand that you alone can’t

estimate indicated that over 300 of those students were also going completely without nutritional meals of any kind over a normal two day weekend.

Working with the Abbotsford Food Bank, corporate partners, non-profit groups, faith groups and individuals, the program called “Abbotsford Rotary Starfish Pack Program” expanded from the original single school pilot project of ten backpacks to the current level of 13 schools serving 195 students and their families.

At the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year, we have renamed our program the “Starfish Pack”, with hopes to exceed the previous number of weekly backpacks. Additional corporate and personal sponsorships are necessary to allow our community partners and volunteers to

continue to make a real difference each week in the lives of local school children and their families.
