Overview for Upcoming Activities

• This class newsletter will inform you on an activity we will be starting this week.

• It will consist of older students in the school (grades 5th and 6th) assisting the children in the classroom and getting involved for a consistent 3 weeks.

• The 5th and 6th graders will get the students to read to them and help them when they come across words they cannot sound out or spell.

• All words will be recorded and written down in an book and when the 3 weeks is over a Spelling Bee will take place at the school for students and parents to attend.

Word Choice

• Not just words taken from the books will be used in the Spelling Bee.

• Words from their Spelling books and words they should know will also be mixed into the Spelling Bee.

• Not only is this reviewing their spelling skills it teaches them many

more skills.

Roles • Students will be responsible for reading books and constantly trying

to expand their vocabulary as much as possible. The teachers primary focus will be to help the students learn their spelling words and help them with reviewing with them and asking to help with whatever areas the students were struggling with. The role of the parents is to practice every night with their students and call out their spelling words and allow them to practice saying their words to become more and more familiar.

• Benefits of having a Spelling Bee will only help to expand students vocabulary and prepare them for everyday life. Communication and writing skills is very essential in life and having known the proper spelling and communication skills it furthers their steps in becoming more educated.

• 1st grade: Standards that will be met with spelling is learning to capitalize the first letter of someone’s name, the beginning of a sentence, when to capitalize certain people, places or things, and how to sound out your words. Becoming familiar with consonants and vowels. Correctly learning how to write certain words and the different rules you have. Ex: “I before e except after c,” and so forth. Also, learning when certain letters are silent in a word.

• Objectives of the Spelling Unit will be for students to be able to write sentences fluently with their sentences spelled correctly.
