    Spider Web Game(Teachers Guide)

    8. The player who will get out of the web first will be declaredwinner.

    TEACHING HINTS

    1. The teacher can rearrange the positions of the spiders in theweb to provide challenge to competing students.

    2. A variation can be played where each student takes 2 or 3 fliesof the same color. At each turn, the player has to make adecision as to which of the 2 or 3 flies to move until all his/herflies get out of the web to become the winner.

    EVALUATION

The success of the use of the material will be determined by themanifestation of students skills in:

    1. substituting values of the variables in the given algebraicexpressions

    2. evaluating algebraic expressions3. accuracy of computation.

    RESOURCES

10 sets of algebraic expression cards40 red spiders (4 for each group)20 yellow spiders (2 for each group)40 green spiders (4 for each group)

    20 blue spiders (2 for each group)50 different colored flies (5 colors for each group)10 spider web board (1 per group)10 white dice (1 per group - marked with -1, 2, -3, 4, -5, 6) -to be

    prepared by the teacher10 red dice (1 per group - marked with 1, -2, 3, -4, 5, -6)- to be

the lowest and so on.2. Each member will get 1 colored fly to serve as his/her chip3. The first player will throw the two dice to determine the value

x and y in the algebraic expression. The white die (marked w-1, 2, -3, 4, -5, 6) will be used for the value of x variable and red die (marked with 1, -2, 3, -4, 5, 6) will be for the value ovariable.

    4. If the player has the values for x and y from the two dice, he/swill get an algebraic expression card facing up-side-down. ing these respective values, the player will substitute x anand evaluate the algebraic expression in two minutes. The otplayers monitor the correctness of the solution/computation

their opponent.5. The player will then move his/her fly from the starting point us

the value of the algebraic expression evaluated. If the valuethe algebraic expression is positive, he/she will move forwfrom the starting point. If the value of the algebraic expressionegative he/she will not move from the starting point and wait for his/her next turn until he/she will get a positive valHe/She will return the card at the bottom (facing up-side-doafter his/her turn.

    6. If the player lands in a point with:- red spider, the player will move 2 steps backward- green spider, the player will move 2 steps forward- yellow spider, the player will go back to the starting point- blue spider, the player will move 4 points forward- a direction, he/she will follow the direction.

    7. If the players computation is a fraction/decimal, he/she mround-off the answer to the nearest whole number/integer.

Example:The algebraic expression taken by the player is

3x -1/3yAfter throwing the dice, the value of x = -1 (meaning -1 in wdie) and the value of y = 5 (meaning 5 in red die)

    Then the value is3(-1) - 1/3 (5) = -3 - 1.67 = -4.67.

This computed value -4.67 will be rounded-off to -5, thusplayer will move 5 steps backward on the spider web bosince the sign is negative. But if the computation is positive, she will move forward.

    PREPARATION

    A. Students should have:

    - knowledge on substituting values of the variables in the givenalgebraic expressions

    - developed mastery on the rules of MDAS in solving series ofoperations

    - developed mastery on rounding-off numbers- knowledge on operations on integers, fractions/decimals- knowledge on evaluating algebraic expressions.

    B. The teacher should prepare the following:

    - Spider Web Board for each group- 1 set of colored spiders for each group

    * 4 red spiders* 2 yellow spiders* 4 green spiders* 2 blue spiders

    - 4 - 5 colored flies for each group- 1 set of algebraic expression cards for each group- 10 white dice marked with -1, 2, -3, 4, -5, 6- 10 red dice marked with 1, -2, 3, -4, 5, -6

    C. The teacher will be the one to place the colored spiders in thespider web board for each group. He/She must see to it that thespiders are placed in points with no directions.

    PROCEDURE FOR USE

    1. Divide the class into groups with 4 - 5 members.2. Distribute the spider web board with the colored spiders pasted

on different points of the web, the colored flies, and the set ofalgebraic expression cards for each group.

    3. If all the needed materials are ready, the teacher gives the rulesof the game.

    Rules of the Game

    1. Each member in the group will throw the white die todetermine who will be the f irst player. The one who will get thelowest number will be the first player followed by the second to

    DESCRIPTION

Spider Web Game is a game that will help increase students sin evaluating algebraic expressions. In this game, the students will evalualgebraic expressions wherein the values of the variables will be taken f rthe two-colored dice.

The main goal of this game is for students to enhance their skillevaluating algebraic expressions by getting out of the web so the fly will be eaten by the spider.
