How can I ever forget that conversation with Matt? Hewas only in his early twenties, but carried the sorrows of a

much older man. Matt told me about his loss of appetite anddifficulty sleeping. Things that used to give him pleasure nolonger did. In fact, he had trouble feeling any emotion at allbecause, he said, inside of him was a black hole of empti-ness. Clearly, behind his blue eyes, the fog of depression hadenshrouded his mind.

As we talked, Matt told a story from his past. Whenhe was a child, he played baseball. But like so many children(heck, like so many adults!) he had trouble hitting a curveball.Over time, he grew so nervous and afraid of failure that hebecame paralyzed at the plate. The bat seemed glued to hisshoulder. Seeing his sons refusal to swing, Matts father felt

frustrated. Eventually, he became irate. One day, hot withanger, he left the stands, stomped toward home plate, and be-rated his son in front of everyone. He finished it off with aflourish, yelling: If you dont hit the ball, Ill disown you!On the next pitch, Matt swung as hard as he could. In fact, theforce of his momentum took him to the ground. But when helooked up from the dust, the ball was in the catchers mitt.

Thankfully, not every memory was sad. Matt told meabout a time that his grandfather took him out for breakfast. They sat down at Cracker Barrel (a good start to any memory, wouldnt you say?) and began looking over the menu. Some-one who knew Matts grandfather saw him across the room

and came up to the table to greet him. Whos this? the visi-tor asked. Oh, this is my son, Matts grandfather said. Get-ting a curious look, he realized what he had said. This is mygrandson, he explained, but hes like a son to me. Mattended that story with a profound statement: It just felt greatto hear someone claim me as a son.

Those who are in Christ have an astounding privi-lege: being claimed as a son or daughter or God. Lets recallthe parable of the prodigal son. Our sin makes us prodigalsfar from home, estranged from the Fathers heart, and effec-tively orphans in the world. Yet, amazingly, God does notgive up on us. Finding us, he forgives us. He claims us as his

children, not merely household servants or hired help. Puttinga ring and a robe on us, he throws the most extravagant feast, for there is joy before the angels of God over a sinner whorepents (Luke 15:10). How would you describe this type oflove? Incredible? Wonderful? Magnificent? Yes, yes, and yesagain!

One of my favorite things about my job is seeing this typelove on display every week. Where do I see it? In our SundSchool teachers! Every week, the most extraordinary groupvolunteers envelops the children of the church with the loof God. They sing songs, play games, and serve snacks. Thread stories, wipe tears, and draw pictures. In everything thsay and do, they communicate the love of God to our littldisciples. These teachers sacrifice time, energy, convenienand preference to care for other peoples children. In truthey treat other peoples children as if they were their own.

Just who are these extraordinary people? They Claire Drowota, LeAnn Stokes, and Porter, Jane Clay, aLucy Meadors. They are Sarah Drury, Becky Griffith, aChristi Williams. They are Kim Sheridan, Joy Jackson, aGloria Jackson. They are Laurie Cooper and Betty WhThey are Ronda Hirst, Sheila Mathias, John Hartong, PHardin, Amber Hardin, and Jessica Hardin. They are Ab

McLean, Jamie Huling, and Catie Pratt. All of these are pple that you should know, love, and thank!

Sometimes, when I meet with Matt, I wonder how his lcould have been different? What if Matt had been takenchurch as a child? What if he learned to love the Bible apray fervently? What if he heard stories of Jesus and his grlove? What if Matt experienced that love through adults the respected and liked? What if he memorized important psages of Scripture, including Psalm 27:10? What if wif what if Matt had grown up in Woodmont ChristChurch? I can say with every fiber of my being that his lwould be so much different and so much better than it is

day.Friends, join me this week in doing two things. First, p

for Matt; he needs Gods healing in his life. Second, thathose who love and nurture our children week-in and weout. Not everyone in the world receives a gift so great awith such lasting impact. Thank a Sunday school teacher day!

Several years ago, an African-American minister at Fisk University planted a seed in my mind that has blossomedover the years. In his sermon, he made the statement that "we approach God through our imagination." It is a con-cept that begs thought and necessitates clarification. Was he suggesting that God is imaginary? I don't think so. Isour relationship to God an illusion? Again, negative. What could he have meant?

I think I know from where he was coming when he shared that thought. Our daily walks of faith require some imagining. How elsecan we interact with someone we cannot see, yet sincerely believe is listening and acting on our behalf? Christ describes the HolySpirit in his conversation with Nicodemus- "The wind blows wherever it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but do not know fromwhere it comes or where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. (St. John 3:8) Jesus knew that though we desabsolute certainty, we have to settle forfaith.

How does this conversation translate to music? After working in both the sacred and secular world for several decades, I have had topportunity and pleasure to witness spiritual growth and maturity resulting from music that inspires contemplation and requires imanation. You may recall in an earlier Spire article that I mentioned story-telling. Songs are stories with a built-in soundtrack. Unlike cousin, cinema, a song allows one to hear the words, feel the emotion of the music and filter it exclusively through one's imaginatioMeaning is interpreted by each of us with the intensely personal experience through which the song passes.

In March, we are presenting an anthem, Corpus Christi Carol, based on a mysterious text discovered in 1504. It is written in Middl

English and full of imagery and symbolism. We are sharing it for your contemplation. The text resides within a haunting musicalshell, which you might enjoy, but it is my hope that the narrative spawns consideration of Christ and his sacrifice for the world.

On Easter, I have asked Matt Cooksey and Shelby Strickland to share a short (two minute) dramatic work presenting Mary's encounwith Christ in the garden. Again, it is my hope that such a presen-tation might assist you in visiting the reality of a risen Saviorthrough your imagination. These small offerings may not be life-changers, but perhaps they can be life-enhancers.

Walt Disney summed his life's work with a word he coined- imagineering. May we imagineerpositive expectations of our interac-tions with God. As Paul stated in I Corinthians 2:9,Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither has entered into the heart of man, thethings which God has prepared for them that love him. I imaginethat is an understatement if ever there was one.

We travelers, walking to the sun, can't see

Ahead, but looking back the very light

That blinded us shows us the way we came,

Along which blessings now appear, risen

As if from sightlessness to sight, and we,

By blessing brightly lit, keep going towardThat blessed light that yet to us is dark.

Wendell Berry, VI (Sabbath Poems 1999)

Gods light blinds us on our journey towards him. Its only as we turnlit by Gods light from behindto

look back over the past parts of our journey that we can see his blessings and his grace along the way. And

its these past blessings that light our path as we carry on. What gives us the strength to go forward is the

realization of how far, by the grace and true light of God, we have come. Looking back strengthens our faith

to journey forward, toward Gods enduring, eternal light.
