Wrestling with Jesus teachings in theSermon on the Mount and the ethicalimplications for our lives today

is certainly not easy. Some will say that the idealsset forth in Matthew 5-7 are unrealistic and impossiblefor humans to attain. But Jesus calls us to try and tokeep trying. Emmet Fox once said, If you really do wishto alter your life, if you really do wish to change yourself

to become a different person altogether in the sight ofGod and of man - if you really do want health and peaceof mind, and spiritual development, then Jesus in hisSermon on the Mount, has clearly shown you how it is tobe done.

Many in our world will ask if Jesus is still relevanttoday. Some will say, He lived two thousand years ago

in ancient Palestine when they thought the world was flatand coming to an end, how can he help me in2014? He can help in many ways. Consider this.

In a world where the arrogant and popular seem toget all the attention and the most aggressive often gettheir way, Jesus says, Blessed are the poor in spirit, fortheirs is the Kingdom of God.

Every single one of us suffers loss and grief, loneli-ness and regret. He says, Blessed are those whomourn, for they will be comforted.

People are often dishonest, manipulative andpassive aggressive. He says Blessed are the pure inheart, for they will see God.

In an age of war, hostility, rivalry, and division, where fear and a need for control often lead to con-flict. He says Blessed are the peacemakers for they willbe called children of God.

While we often forget the influence we have onothers, he says, You are the salt of the earth. You arethe light of the world.

Adultery is far too common, ripping familiesapart. He says: Watch your thoughts: whoever looks ata woman with lust in his eyes has already committedadultery in his heart. In other words, be careful whatyou think about because thoughts lead to actions.

Often, we dont just get mad, we want to geteven. He says, Turn the other cheek.

We are guilty of turning the people who have hurt usinto enemies, he says: Love your enemies, and pray forthose who persecute you.

While many give to charity for the recognition, thepraise, the social status and prestige, he says: Giveyour alms in secret, and your father who sees in secretwill reward you.

Many are overtly pious and want others to see howfaithful they are. He says, Pray in secret and dont useempty words. Forgive others, if you want God to forgive

you.We are obsessed with accumulating wealth and

possessions, constantly checking the market as our mainsource of security in life. He says, Dont store up foryourselves treasures on earth. Store up treasures inheaven. You cannot serve both God and wealth.

We spend so much of our time and energy worryingabout everything under the sun our health, our reputa-tion, our job, our security, our investments, our marriageour children, our grandchildren, the future, and evendeath itself. He says: Do not worry about your life, whatyou will eat or what you will drink. Or about your cloth-ing, what you will wear. Can any of you by worryingadd a single hour to your span of life? Dont worry abouttomorrow. Todays trouble is enough for today.

We are often all guilty of judging other people basedon their skin color, class, possessions, age, gender, marital status, reputation, wealth, and connections hesays: Do not judge, so that you may not be

judged. Why do you see the speck in your neighborseye but do not recognize the log in your own eye? Takethe log out of your own eye then you can see clearly thespeck in your neighbors eye.

We are often lost, confused, and perplexed. Yet hesays, Ask and it will be given to you. Search and you

will find. Knock, and the door will be open to you.We are often rude, hostile, inconsiderate, and lack

civility. He says: In everything do unto others as youwould have them do unto you. So simple, so profound, but yet so challenging. I would reserve the possibilitythat these words may be more relevant today than everbefore. Therefore, lets keep wrestling, reflecting, andgrowing even though we often fall short of living up.

    Dear Woodmont,

In the entire history of the universe, let alone in your own history, there has

never been another day just like today, and there will never be another likeit again. Today is the point to which all your yesterdays have been leadingsince the hour of your birth. It is the point from which all your tomorrows

will proceed until the hour of your death. If you were aware of how precious today is, you could hardly livethrough it. Unless you are aware of how precious it is, you can hardly be said to be living at all.

    Frederick Buechner

Wake up! The hunt has already begun. You ask, "What are we hunting for?"

    We are hunting for grace!

Beauty and grace are performed whether or not we will sense it. The least

we can do is try to be there.-Annie Dillard

God's hand is upon our lives whether we acknowledge it or not. The first thing I do when I feel the distance be-tween me and God is give an accounting of my heart. Counting blessings provides Divine perspective. Every sylla-ble of gratitude spoken extends the circumference of hope and marks our lives as sacred. King David said, "teachme how to number my days." I fear we are often guilty of "numbering" our days by its curses instead of its bless-ings. It is easy to complain. I call it the "stumped-toe" syndrome. We allow the inevitable "stumped toes" that comewith being human to overshadow the epiphanies, the tiny miracles, and the holy signs of God's presence radiatingfrom the theater of our lives. We forget that everything inside and around us is charged with glory, even the thin, dark, broken and doubting places. But first we must remove the cataracts of cynicism and self-absorption to wit-ness God at work. Nothing good comes from an ostrich with his head in the dirt! When we count grace we begin tosee again the holy potential for our lives!

Did you know that in the the Jewish tradition, an observant Jew will say 100 blessing prayers a day? They praya "brakha" which always begins, "Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who......blessed me with abluejay's song to start my day, blessed me with the toothy-grin of my one year old, blessed me with words of inspi-ration when I thought my pen had run dry, blessed me with a husband that makes me smile, and blessed me with akind babysitter who disposed of the half-eaten rabbit that my dog, Romeo, proudly deposited at our front doorstoop!

But top on the list is Blessed are you, Lord, my God, King of the Universe, who continues to bemy Divine confidant and Friend, who faithfully shows up for me every single day of my life, even

    when I choose not to!

Wisdom teaches that there is never a greater time to count blessings than when we find ourselves in a season

of disappointment, pain, doubting, and great sorrow. When God appears silent in our lives, we must become evenmore vigilant in our "hunt" for grace. God promises that even in the pitch black darkness, there will always be a starof hope to lead us through.

Just to be is a blessingJust to live is holy.-Rabbi Herschel

As we enter the Easter season, let's number our days by counting grace.
