My brother John sent this to me last week. It's powerful andtrue. I hope he wasn't trying to tell me something.--------------------------------------------------------------------------

SON: "Daddy, may I ask you a question?"DAD: "Yeah sure, what is it?"SON: "Daddy, how much do you make an hour?"DAD: "That's none of your business. Why do you asksuch a thing?"SON: "I just want to know. Please tell me, how much doyou make an hour?"DAD: "If you must know, I make $100 an hour."SON: "Oh! (With his head down).SON: "Daddy, may I please borrow $50?"

    The father was furious.

DAD: "If the only reason you asked that is so you canborrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other non-sense, then you march yourself straight to your room andgo to bed! Think about why you are being so selfish. Iwork hard every day and I expect much more out of youthan this childish behavior."

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier aboutthe little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questionsonly to get some money? After about an hour or so, theman had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there

was something he really needed to buy with that $50 andhe really didn't ask for money very often. The man wentto the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.

DAD: "Are you asleep, son?"SON: "No daddy, I'm awake."DAD: "I 've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on youearlier. It's been a long day and I took out my aggravationon you. Here's the $50 you asked for."

The little boy sat straight up, smiling.SON: "Oh, thank you daddy!"

Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out somecrumpled up bills. The man saw that the boy already hadmoney, started to get angry again. The little boy slowlycounted out his money, and then looked up at his father.

DAD: "Why do you want more money if you alreadyhave some?"

SON: "Because I didn't have enough, but now I do.Daddy, I have $100 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to havedinner with you."

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his littleson, and he begged for his forgiveness. It's just a shortreminder to all of you working so hard in life. We shouldnot let time slip through our fingers without having spentsome time with those who really matter to us, those closeto our hearts. Do remember to share that $100 worth ofyour time with someone you love. If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replaceus in a matter of days. But the family and friends weleave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into

work than to our family.------------------------------------------------------------------------Life moves very quickly. Children grow up fast. We shoudo everything we can to spend time with and be present those that we love the most!

Presence: Time with Those We Loveby Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

When others ask me about coming to knowJesus as Savior, they are always looking for thatmoment of conversion. Sometimes they seek a

story rooted in hard times, heartache, or a "hitting rock bottom"experience. Knowing that I was raised by a pastor father anddevoted Christian mother they are simply seeking a Prodigal Sonstory.

My story, however, is much more of an Older Brotherjourney. For me, Jesus is like an old friend. He's the kind offriend that you don't really remember meeting but you know hasalways been there. And life without that dear friend wouldn'treally be a full life. However, this has led to some Older Brothermoments for me.

During my teen years there were times when a familymember or friend was getting a lot of attention because of poorchoices made. Even though much of that attention was negativeit was still attention. In my teen years attention and approvalwere so important and that made it hard to watch others always

getting the attention I often desired. If you asked my mom todshe would be glad to tell you how "easy" I was as a teen and hshe never had to worry about me. I look back now on that tiwith a sense of accomplishment but that doesn't mean it weasy.

Isn't that the Older Brother? When his younger broth

returns after wasting his money and living on the streets his dthrows a party! Understandably the Older Brother is a litannoyed, after all, he was "easy." He was always there, workiaway, never causing trouble and ever obedient. Why should irresponsible little brother get a party?

Just like I had as a teen, the Older Brother also had the loand approval of his father. The abundance that he enjoyed odaily basis was his constant party! May we all live our lives aconstant party enjoying the love and approval of our loving Go

Remember our three "focus areas" for 2013?Prayer Presence Peace

I wonder if the average new person who walked into our

worship services any given Sunday could figure out that theseare the three things our church is most focused on this year. Tobe the heart of our congregation in 2013, we should not onlymemorize these three words but also live them out in our day-to-day lives. Continuing the series on each of these three areas, Iwould like to lift up the second virtue in particular: presence.

A leader once said that "history is made by the people whoshow up." This certainly proves to be true at the ballot box andpolitical rallies, but I think the sentiment runs deeper than that.Perhaps homes are made by the mothers and fathers who showup to love. Schoolsare made by the teachers and children whoshow up to learn. Communitiesare made by the neighbors who

show up to help each other.

So too are churches made by the men, women, and childrenwho show up. People are the lifeblood of any congregation. One of the things we hear most often from new visitors is howfriendly our congregation is. There are no signs or structuresthat could make someone feel that way; they feel this waybecause of the people who greet them with a smile and wrapthem up in the loving arms of our community. No matter howmany nails, hammers, or dollars are donated, the Habitat housecannot be built without people who show up. Even if we havethe greatest VBS curriculum and decorations in the world, it is

thepeoplewho spend time with our little ones that helps themunderstand God. Yes, churches are made by the people wshow up!

Woodmont Christian Church is not made up of bricks a

mortar. It is made up of the people who bring their presenceso many ways both on Sunday and every other day of tweek. We are called not only to be present physically, balso to be present spiritually and emotionally for each other. short, by offering our presence, we are really offering the bof ourselves to each other. This is what makes us WoodmoChristian Church.

During these forty holy days of Lent, here are a few of the maways we can practicepresence:

Commit to beingpresent in worship every Sunday betweennow and Easter

Take time each morning before beginning your day to listefor Godspresence in your life (in silence or by readingscripture)

Be Godspresenceto someone in our church by deliveringa meal to someone in the hospital or with a new baby

Give a small presentof gratitude to a local teacher who ismaking a difference in our community

Honor the presence of those around you by offering compliment to a different person every day of Lent.

Laken "Red" Warnock - A Memory

After discussion among several of your Elders andsome of the Ministerial staff, it was believed both fittingand appropriate that this information, limited andincomplete as it of necessity must be, should be shared.

Red's life can be understood, at least somewhat, asrepresented by several major influences:

Love of and pride in family - his wife, Nelta, hisson, Tim, and his daughter, JoAnna

Devotion to learning and scholarship - Portsmouth,Ohio High School, Milligan College (BS),Vanderbilt University (PhD) - and a professionallifetime of teaching biochemistry at Vanderbilt atboth undergraduate and graduate levels

Major health issues - typhoid fever - beingquarantined for two years from school andplaymates; multiple skin cancers and finally, renal failure

A keen sensitivity for the arts - as an American Rose Society judge - as an accomplished leaded/stained glass artist, evidenced by the lovely stained glass window hanging in Woodmont's library, a memorial honoring his wife, Nelta, after her long and tedious battles with cancer

His unselfish devotion to Woodmont's Troop #92, serving as Scoutmaster and troop leader, for which leadership hewas awarded the prestigious "Long Rifle Award"

A "natural" athletic ability with a multi-year All Conference college baseball career

In 1976, Red was recognized by Woodmont Christian Church as a "Layman of the Year." We hope that these words servto trigger your own memories of Red.

    Thank you,Gene Regen
