Introduction

Sports communication is very important in a game, especially in a basketball game. Without communication each team wouldn’t know what play to run, what defense to run, who to pass the ball to, or even who to sub in the game. Therefore, I will discuss communication as far as offense, defense, subing teamates, coaching, and any extra skills needed in communicating in a basketball game.

Practice

Before you even think of playing in a game you have to have practice, practice defense, offense, offensive plays that you are going to use in order to score points, defensive plays that you use to prevent the opposing team from scoring, out of bounds plays, basketball drills such as ball handling, practicing your form so you can be precise at shooting, shooting freethrows, excercising, and even meditating.

Basic Information

Now here is some basic information in a regular game of high school basketball. Both teams are made up of an average of 15 players on a team and 5 players can be on the floor; the positions that are played in basketball is the point guard, two wings, then you have the two posts, a high post and a low post; there is a head coach and an assistant coach; there are two referees in a game; there are four quarters in a game with 12 minutes on each quarter; there is half time where each team gets thirty minutes to talk about strengths and weaknesses they need to work on for the second half; there maybe be overtime that’s when both teams are tied and they get 5 minutes to play after that if the team is still tied they go into a second overtime until one of the teams win then it’s official, at the end of the game the teams line up and shake hands and you usually get the opportunity to play the opponent twice during the season. The game of basketball is a mental, physical, emotional, and social game. It’s a matter of who wants to win the most.

Offense

When beginning the game of basketball you need to determine which team is offense or defense in doing that usually the tallest from each team stands in the center of the basketball court and the referee throws the ball up in the air and the player that gets the ball and passes it to their side that determines who is offense and defense.

First we will talk about the offense team. The offense team is the team that has control of the ball. Usually when coming up the floor the point guard will call out a play to use so that the team is able to score, now if the play don’t work and a player gets fouled the offensive team has to set up an out of bounds play where the team either sets it up to try to shoot and score or sets it up to get the ball in before your 5 seconds is up, if you don’t get the ball in by 5 seconds the ball goes to the opposing team. Now if the player is in motion to shoot and he/she gets fouled they get the opportunity to shoot 2 shots at the freethrow line, now if you shoot outside the 3 point line you get three chances to shoot.

Defense

Next I will talk to you about being on defense. The defensive team is the team that wasn’t able to get the ball at the beginning of the game so their job is to defend the basket and prevent the offense from scoring, you can do that by setting up different defenses such as man to man or 2-3 zone. Man to man defense is where you are up against an offensive player pressuring them to give up the ball now you have the opportunity to steal it and score but you can slap them or that’s considered a foul. 2-3 zone is where you have two players up by the freethrow line and 3 players at the bottom near the baseline by the basket, usually a coach will do this when the team is having too much foul trouble, or he/she may do to just mix the defenses up a little bit.
