Fit FactFill up on fruits and veggies Almost every American needs to eat more fresh fruits and veggies, and one of the most common excuses people offer for not eating enough is that they’re just not very convenient . But so many fruits are the perfect finger food! You wash and eat, and then just toss the pit or the core . That’s no harder to get rid of than an empty cookie wrapper or chip bag .

Forget the old “no pain, no gain” mottoIgnoring your body’s signals could be dangerous . Heat-related illnesses come with warning signs, so be sure that you learn how to recognize them and know what actions to take .

Give Your Trees a Boost This SpringWith warmer weather right around the corner now is a great time to install mulch around the trees in your landscape. Mulch is a protective layer of material placed over the root zone of your tree to help protect it and promote health and vigor.

Types of MulchThere are many varieties of mulch. Two basic categories: organic and inorganic.

• Organic – made from natural substances and can include hardwood and softwood tree bark, pine straw, wood chips, cocoa hulls, pecan shells, compost mixes and a variety of other plant-derived products. Decomposes over time and must be replenished after several years.

• Inorganic – can include lava rock, many different stone products, landscape cloth or geotextile fabrics and pulverized rubber. Does not decompose so it will not need to be replenished.

Proper Mulching Techniques

• Remove all weeds in the area you plan to mulch. It is recommended that you create a circle of mulch about 2 feet in diameter for every 1 inch in diameter of the tree, or out to the drip line of the tree. Remember mulch wide – not deep.

• Cover the area around the tree with a layer of mulch between 2 to 4 inches deep. Too much mulch can be harmful and can suffocate the root system. Rule of Thumb: 2 inches deep for fine textured mulch, such as compost or shredded wood. 3 to 4 inches deep for coarse textured mulch, such as bark nuggets.

• Keep the mulch 2 to 3 inches away from the trunk of the tree to prevent decay due to wet mulch and rodent activity during the winter months. Keep the mulch 6 to 12 inches away from your house or any other structures in your landscape.

Benefits of Mulching

Helps maintain soil moisture. Evaporation is reduced – minimizing the need for watering.

Helps control weeds.

Helps prevent damage caused by getting too close to the trunk with a mower or trimmer.

Keeps the soil cooler during the summer and warmer during the winter, therefore providing a more constant soil temperature.

Prevents crusting of the soil. Improves the movement of water into the root zone.

Mulched trees produce more roots than trees without mulch.

Organic mulch provides nutrients to the soil and root zones of the trees when the mulch breaks down and decomposes.

Provides additional beauty to the landscape and gives the finishing touch to a well-manicured yard.

Fit FactExpect the weather to changeIt might be winter one day and spring the next, then flip back and forth a few times before it’s done . Cope with the changing extremes by leaving room for layering underneath your waterproof jacket and pants . Check the forecast before you go and take extra layers if necessary or, even better yet, just leave an extra top and bottom layer or two in your vehicle or pack all the time .

“I’m a retired teacher (math, home economics, physical education, computer science) who doesn’t know when to quit . My son was the one to convince me I needed to know how to use a computer in 1998 . His motivational words to me were, “in the future, someone who cannot use a computer will be like someone who cannot read .” He was so right and I have not regretted one minute of my adventures with technology . I decided to go back to school and get my Masters in a technology field in 2000 . Currently I work with the Temple College Community Education program, teach private computer lessons and have recently joined the Sammons Community Center as the computer instructor . In my spare time I sing with the Chisholm Trail Chorus of the National Sweet Adeline’s organization and love crafting projects . I’m looking forward to more computer adventures; come be a part of one of the great classes in our updated computer lab!”

Fit FactJoin a team One subtle advantage of organized recreational activities is that they can help you break out of the sedentary mindset . Playing league sports, joining a cycling club, even a walking group, helps you begin to think of yourself as the kind of person who would be fit, and for many people, that mental hurdle is the biggest one to get over .

RES

TAdopt A Park The City of Temple encompasses parks, gardens, and trails. These areas provide our community with an enhanced quality of life through recreational spaces, picnic spots, ex-ercise opportunities, and community gather-ing areas.

Temple has a remarkable 58 developed parks and special use areas. The parks supply ani-mal habitat, flood control, climate control and oxygen producing trees. These features are vital to maintaining a healthy lifestyle for our community. Parks, gardens, and trails also help attract businesses to our area which im-proves Temple’s economy. Temple’s Parks and Leisure Services Department works diligent-ly to provide citizens with clean, attractive, and well maintained areas. Due to the number of parks in Temple, it is difficult to keep each park in its top condition at all times. With your enthusiasm, willingness, and effort we can keep Temple’s parks in prime condition. This program is fun, easy and rewarding.

We ask the following of each adopter:

• Each group/individual must fill out one Adopt-A-Park partnership form

• Each participant needs to fill out and return a release form before the workday date

• Each group needs one contact person

• Each group/individual should volunteer in the park at least 3 days out of the year

• The first workday will need to be scheduled with an Adopt-A-Park staff

• Volunteer hours need to be tracked and submitted to the Parks and Leisure Services Administration Office

A sign will be placed in an adopter’s park to recognize the groups/individuals. Temple Parks and Leisure Services Adopt-A-Park Program would like to thank our adopt-ers for their dedication, involvement, and hard work. These people have made a commitment to help maintain Temple’s parks. We encour-age all Temple residents and organizations to help beautify our city by adopting a park!
