he Preserve is part of an old growth forest along Spring Creek. It was set aside as a preserve in 1988 due to its unique old growth trees and endangered species. The 83 acre preserve is maintained by the City of Garland and the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest. The preserve features old growth bottomland forest with Spring Creek running over a bed of solid limestone. The 20-40 foot tall cliffs contain Cretaceous fossils. The creek is spring fed and has never run dry. The water clarity allows easy viewing of the native Longear Sunfish and the water supply has allowed the forest to survive for centuries. Some of the trees in the forest are 500 years old and tower 100 feet high. More than 630 species of plants and animals have been observed living in the forest.

The densely shaded preserve has been improved with miles of trails to accommodate the public. The forest is kept as natural as possible so that visitors can experience life as it was before the area was settled in 1846. Every February, nature walks are held to celebrate the blooming of the trout lily (dogtooth-violet).

The preserve is maintained and managed by the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest, a not-for-profit organization formed to oversee the park under the direction of the Garland Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department as provided under its contract with Dallas County.

Dallas County Parks and Open Spaces maintains the 33 acre Spring Creek Park Preserve immediately north of the Spring Creek Forest Preserve. These are the only two areas along the creek that have been given preservation status.

Today, visitors continue to express awe at the forest’s natural treasures. For anyone interested in learning more about the Spring Creek Forest Preserve or helping to preserve it, please visit the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest website at www.springcreekforest.org.
