Our lives, society, and culture have dramatically changed

due to the daily infl uences of sports, recreation, and

athletics. Football legend Jim Brown once said, “We all

experience the pressure to do our best. And many of us,

whether we grow up to be an actor, a CEO, a mechanic

or football star, have our fi rst brush with greatness while

playing sports in our youth.”

Engaging our children in athletics and recreational

programs will positively infl uence them for a lifetime.

Can you remember the last time that you or a member of

your family experienced the thrill of sinking the winning

basket, the sense of pride knowing that you had given it

your best effort even though the outcome wasn’t a “W,”

or the accomplishment of achieving your weight loss

goal by taking part in a fi tness program?

Life lessons learned through these experiences create

a strong foundation that is shaped by sports and the

pursuits of athletics. We want our young people to have

character, develop social skills, self-confi dence, learn

respect, earn trust, develop a work ethic, and become

the very best they can be.

These same assertions are not only true for youth, but for

adults as well. Participants of all ages can experience

the benefi ts of engaging in recreation. New friendships

are formed, socialization skills are honed, a new skill is

learned, stress relief is achieved, and physical, mental

and spiritual wellness is accomplished.

Remember – it’s not just a game, it’s a metaphor for

life. Lessons learned through recreation are vital to

what makes each one of us who we are, and who we will

ultimately become.

Enjoy Life,

Steve C. Buschor

Director of Parks and Recreation

START SMARTSUCCESSPLAY PROGRAM: Start Smart

Submitted By: Lacy Biles

We became interested in Start Smart as a way to

expose our 3 1/2-year-old son, Zachary, to the

fundamentals of a variety of sports in an easy-to-

follow and somewhat structured format. While he

has always been interested in playing catch, the

Start Smart program took him to the next level.

The program consists of four sports: football,

baseball, soccer and basketball. The children meet

once a week for a total of six weeks to learn each of

the four sports. Every week the coaches demonstrate

different skills and then allow the children about 15

minutes to practice with their parents. The end of

each session brings everyone together as a team.

The provided handbook allows for practice of each

skill at home, and each week builds upon the

previous session. While there is structure to the

meetings, each child progresses at his or her own

speed, with an emphasis on fun.

The fi nal week ends with a brief “game” which

ties all the skills together. There is a short awards

ceremony, where each child receives a certifi cate

and the equipment needed for each sport. The

coaches deserve special thanks for this program,

as everyone receives personal attention.

Zachary has now successfully participated in

baseball, football, and basketball.

Don’t miss the NEW! Start Smart Academy Camp offered in June. See page 23 for details.

Benefi ts of Youth Sport Programs

There are many benefi ts from youth participation in organized sports, particularly the physical, social and personal benefi ts. Physical: Overall health improvement, coordination, and fi tness. Strengthens defenses against illness, supports healthy weight, and maintains bone and muscle health. Reduces anxiety and stress. Social: Social and moral requirements for participation are parallel to how individuals function in a law-abiding society.

Personal: Provides self-satisfaction from belonging to a team. Builds self-esteem, teaches responsibility, independence, and leadership.

The benefi ts of playing sports are not just for kids. There are plenty of adult leagues in the City of Roanoke. Joining an amateur league brings excitement into your life, reduces weight and breaks the habit of dull exercise routines. The social benefi ts include meeting people outside the normal contacts of work and family.

Be a Coach, Mentor

Recreation clubs throughout the City of Roanoke are always interested and excited to gain new coaches to assist with athletic programs. If you are interested in giving back to the community by helping to shape the minds and bodies of the valley’s youth through athletics, then being a coach/mentor is right for you.

Athletic Volunteer Program

Do you enjoy sports, but just don’t have the time to get involved in community athletics? The new Athletic Volunteer Program may be the answer you have been looking for. Athletic Volunteers will have the opportunity to lend a hand with special events and other activities when their schedules permit. Stay active in your community and support Roanoke’s local athletes as they participate in a variety of events.

THE BENEFITS ARE ENDLESS.

KICKBALL...FOR ADULTS?By: Cindy McFall

For many of us, kickball brings back childhood memories of playing the

sport during recess in grade school. But for a large group of adults in

Roanoke, kickball brings to mind the summer of 2008 when they joined

the fi rst ever City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation kickball league.

The kickball league began play in July with an amazing 21 teams in two

playing divisions. Over 420 men, women, friends, and co workers signed

up to compete at the River’s Edge softball fi elds two-nights a week.

Although the games were competitive, good sportsmanship, teamwork,

and camaraderie were evident and created an atmosphere of fun and

excitement. The season lasted until early September when tournament

champions in each division were awarded the winners’ cups. Only four

teams walked away with trophies, but all 420 players walked away with

something more important – new energy, new friends, and a new season

to look forward to in 2009.

The kickball league is part of an effort to get adults in the city to become

more active and develop healthy lifestyles. Other new non-traditional adult

sports such as dodge ball, wiffl eball, ultimate football, baggo, and baseball

are also fi nding their way onto the Roanoke sports scene. Traditional

athletic enthusiasts can rest assured that softball, basketball, fl ag football,

and volleyball leagues will remain constant in the sports line up.

So whether you are looking for a traditional sport or a new challenge,

Roanoke Parks and Recreation has what you are looking for. Join

an adult athletic team today!

“ I had not played an organized sport for 10 years until my co-workers and

I joined the kickball league last summer. We weren’t the fastest or the

fi ttest or even the best players, but we had so much fun. Occasionally I

run into people we played against and all we talk about is how we can’t

wait until the new season starts.” - Kenny Dudley

Name: Christine LanganPosition: Outdoor Recreation Programmer

What are your basic duties as Outdoor Recreation Programmer?

I oversee all the Outdoor Adventure programs like canoeing, kayaking, caving, hiking, biking, star gazing, and rock climbing including the indoor rock wall.

What is your background?

I have a Wildlife Science degree from Virginia Tech. I got my start in the outdoor field working as an environmental educator at a summer camp and from there my career with leading people in the outdoors took off.

What degree of difficulty and style of hikes do you offer?

I offer hikes for all skill levels from greenway hikes on a paved surface to all-day hikes that climb mountains. In PLAY we have created a rating system so participants can get an understanding of the difficulty of the hikes; we call it our “boot system.” One boot means the trail is short and on a paved surface while four boots means the trail is long and very technical.

What is your favorite hike?

My favorite hike is to Devil’s Marbleyard in Natural Bridge Station, Va. The hike is beautiful in itself as it traverses through the Jefferson National Forest and across the stream a few times, but the Marbleyard is an amazing site. An entire hillside is covered with huge boulder on top of huge boulder. You won’t want to miss our April 16 trip.

How many people typically attend each hike?

Our group size can be between seven and 12 people. I have a lot of regulars that have become friends through the hiking programs. You do not have to know anyone on the hike before you come because you will quickly feel right at home with this group.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Meeting new people and sharing their enthusiasm as they see wildlife on our hike or have their first experience in a kayak on the water. Although nothing can top the excitement I feel when I have passed on to someone my love, appreciation and respect for the great outdoors.

Up Close with Christine

MILL MOUNTAIN PARKYou might recognize Mill Mountain for its famous landmark, the gigantic illuminated Roanoke Star that shines down over the city. You may not know that Mill Mountain is also a park overflowing with natural resources and recreational opportunities for you and your family to enjoy.

At the top of the mountain you will find the Discovery Center, a place designed to connect you and your children to the natural resources found on Mill Mountain. You won’t want to miss the new and exciting exhibits and programs available this spring. Adjacent to the Discovery Center you will find a brand new addition, a natural outdoor formation playground. With boulders to climb on, logs to climb through, and fossil indents to explore, the playground is sure to become a Roanoke favorite.

The Mill Mountain Park trail system is also impressive, with over 10 miles of trails. You can hike, bike, or ride your horse on any of the different trails including the Mill Mountain Greenway. Programs are available in the spring designed to guide you through the trail system on foot or bike. Joining one of these programs is a great way to meet new people if you are new to the area, or want to get involved with other recreation enthusiasts in the city.

Other amenities found in Mill Mountain Park include the scenic overlook located under the Roanoke Star offering a panoramic view of the city, a beautiful wildflower garden, and the Mill Mountain Zoo.

Roanoker Pierce Workman, son of Paul and Lisa Workman, enjoys an afternoon adventure in the park. For a map to help you navigate your future adventures in Mill Mountain Park, visit www.roanokeva.gov/millmountainparkmap

What do a retired Roanoke dentist,

physician, electrician, mechanic, several

railroad workers, a homemaker and an

art teacher have in common? They are all

environmentalists and members of the

“Mid-week Crew” who come together every

Wednesday to volunteer their time to make

Roanoke a better place to live.

For over 10 years, the crew has been

dedicated to improving the trail system in

Mill Mountain Park. Their fi rst major project

was constructing the Star Trail. The project

took 10 volunteers approximately four

months to complete. The team has also

worked on many of the other Mill Mountain

Park trails including the Watchtower,

Chestnut Ridge, Monument, Ridgeline, and

most recently the Virginia Pine.

“Volunteering with the Mid-week Crew

is very rewarding,” says crew leader and

retired physician Bill Gordge. “We really

do enjoy every aspect of it – learning the

art of trail building, the camaraderie of the

group, the hard labor and exercise, and

the privilege of being out in the wonderful

outdoors.”

Currently there are 11 members of the

Mid-week Crew. If you think you may be

interested in joining them, contact Bill

Gordge at [email protected].
