Spring 2016
THERE WASN'T ANY PRESCHOOL OR KIN-DERGARTEN AT AGE SIX YOU START-ED IN FIRST GRADE, I COULD NOT WRITE MY NAME NOT ONE NUMBER OR ABC I HAD EVER MADE. THERE WERE NO HOT LUNCHES OR BREAKFAST SERVED ON A PLATE, FROM OUR LITTLE TIN LARD BUCKETS COLD LUNCHES IS WHAT WE ATE. FROM FIRST TO SEV-ENTH GRADE ONE TEACHER TAUGHT US ALL, STUDENTS SAT IN ROWS IN ONE BIG ROOM NO BATHROOM, GYMNASIUM OR STUDY HALL. THE BUILDING HAD TWO DOORS MAIN ONE UP FRONT - ONE AT THE BACK, TWO CLOSETS ON EACH SIDE OF THE DOOR USED FOR LUNCH BUCKETS AND A COAT RACK. HEATING STOVE SAT IN THE MIDDLE THE ROOM WAS OFTEN DRAFTY AND COLD, THIS ONE ROOM SCHOOL BUILDING HAD BEEN STANDING FOR MANY YEARS - WAS GETTING OLD. THERE WASN'T A BATHROOM RAISE YOUR HAND - "IF YOU HAD TO GO," TWO LITTLE OUT-HOUSES SAT FAR APART DOWN AMONG SOME BUSHES AND WEEDS IN A FENCE ROW. WE TOOK TURNS BEATING THE ERASERS CLEAN POUNDING THAT CHALK DUST WAS A LOT OF FUN, I LIKED DOING THIS BETTER THAN PLAYING BASEBALL AND NEVER MAKING A HOME-RUN.
HAD TO WALK ABOUT HALF MILE TO GET HOME WE WERE ANXIOUS TO GET HOME TO PLAY, THERE WEREN'T ANY BUSES FOR US TO RIDE SOMETHING WE DID ALMOST EVERY SCHOOL DAY. PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG AND A PRAYER AFTER THE TEACHER RANG THE BELL, IF YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG - GOT A SPANKING NO ONE WAS SENT HOME OR EXPELLED. WE WROTE WITH A YELLOW NO. TWO LEAD PENCIL NO ASSORTED COLORS IN GEL BALL POINT PENS, NO FOLDERS, OR SPECIAL BINDERS NO BACKPACKS TO CARRY OUR BOOKS IN.

Town Clerk Hours
Do you have news of births, engagements, weddings, etc; please share with us! We are a small community and it is nice to build a close relationship with our neighbors. It is nice to share in the celebrations of joyous events or when life is difficult; letting your neighbors know you have suffered an illness or a loss. The extra prayers always help :) If you have historical or interesting stories that you would enjoy sharing with your neighbors please contact me. I am also interested in old photos. You may send them to me digitally, mail them, or allow me to scan them. “Spotlight Resident” - If you would like to write about the life of your loved one that has passed and had lived in Allen, please e-mail or mail the story and pictures.
For “Spotlight” stories, and “Letters to the Editor” please include your name, address, and phone number. Anonymous submissions will not be honored. Subscriptions to Allen Outlook and all local advertising services are free. I look forward to creating ongoing publications for years to come (on a monthly basis). I need your assistance to share news and ideas to keep Allen Outlook crisp and inviting. Please contact me to share ideas for future pub-lications. Thank you for your support!

HOW DID THE TEACHER TEACH SO MANY GRADES
HOW DID SHE GET IT ALL DONE IN ONE DAY, WE HAD TIME FOR LONG RECESSES
GOT TO GO OUTSIDE - HAD GAMES TO PLAY.
THERE WEREN'T BUT A FEW IN EACH GRADE MAYBE TWO - PERHAPS FOUR,
TWENTY-FIVE OR THIRTY NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDREN BUT THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN TAUGHT, HAD THERE
BEEN MORE.
EVERYONE LINED UP AFTER PLAY-ING
WATER BUCKET SAT AT THE BACK DOOR, I AM GLAD I GOT TO GO TO A ONE ROOM
THEY ARE NO LONGER BEING USED - HOW SAD.
CHILDREN ATTEND MODERN SCHOOLS TODAY ONE ROOM SCHOOLS ARE MEMORIES OF THE PAST,
THOSE CARE-FREE DAYS OF MY CHILDHOOD HAVE ALSO GOTTEN AWAY MUCH TOO FAST.

Always refer to your specific car seat manufacturer’s instructions (check height and weight limits) and read the
vehicle owner’s manual on how to install the car seat using the seat belt or lower anchors and a tether, if available.
To maximize safety, keep your child in the car seat for as long as possible, as long as the child fits within the
manufacturer’s height and weight requirements.
Keep your child in the back seat at least through age 12.
