Young Eleanor • Born in 1883 in New York City

• Grew up in a wealthy family, but

she loved helping people.

• Attended boarding school at age of 15

• Traveled to other countries

• Learned to be brave and independent thinker

Young Eleanor• When Eleanor was 18, her grandmother asked her to

come home to New York.

• She met wealthy families

• She showed respect for and acceptance of authority by doing what her grandmother asked of her.

• Helped immigrants with education and housing

• She helped others find jobs

How did Eleanor help others?

• 1905 Eleanor married Franklin Roosevelt

They both wanted to help people.

• 1921 Franklin had a disease called polio.

• This disease left him paralyzed and unable to walk.

• Eleanor traveled and helped Franklin keep his career.

• 1928 She helped Franklin become governor of New York.

In the White House

• 1933-1945 Franklin was elected President of the United States.

• He was president during the Great Depression.

• He started program called the New Deal.

• Roosevelt was disabled, so Eleanor traveled for Franklin. She spoke about needs and problems.

• She shared this information with Franklin and they developed ways to help people.

• Met with women reporters

• wrote a daily newspaper called “My Day”.• Worked with Mary McLeod Bethune to help African

Americans receive equal rights and jobs• World War II began and Franklin was still President• Eleanor visited soldiers all over the world• Delivered messages from and to the soldiers
