A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Parishioners: In this Sunday’s Gospel from Luke 10: 1-12, 17-20, Jesus sends out 72 disciples ahead of him to announce the coming of the Kingdom of God; that is the coming of Jesus Christ. This heralding of the good news is the mission of the Church. The Church uses the Greek word Kerygma to express this announcement that we are supposed to do. Christ has made us his ambassa-dors, and has given us the authority to proclaim the coming of the Kingdom. So much so that when they reject us, they are rejecting Christ, which means they are rejecting God. Why does Jesus Christ need to come into our lives? Because God has seen our misery; that our life is not the life God has intended for us. God created us for holy things; the things that truly matter - his everlast-ing love and mercy. God created us for everlasting happiness, to take on his power to love eternally, but human beings have chosen just the opposite. And so God has sent his Son to us so that we may live new lives in him. And some people in the world have been chosen to bring this good news to the world; these are the Christians, and we have been given this work with the authority to heal others through the power of the Holy Spirit, not to be arrogant and im-posing but humble and meek like lambs among wolves. When the 72 disciples come back to Jesus after visit-ing the villages, they tell him that even the demons are subject to us because of your name, and Jesus says, “I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky.” But despite all the powers that he has given them, Je-sus tells them not to rejoice because the spirits are subject to them, but rejoice that their names are writ-ten in heaven. We too should not lose sight of our goal in our Christian journey; and that is to become citi-zens of heaven. God did not create us to live a superfi-cial life on this earth begging for a “happiness” from things that cannot satisfy us. We are creat-ed for the eternal; only God who is eternal can satisfy us. Don’t settle for less. - Fr Basil.
