Dear Parishioners,
The season of Lent will begin on Wednesday, February 17, Ash Wednesday. Lent is the 40-day season of penance and preparation for Easter. Easter will fall on Sunday, April 4 this year. I want to remind you that Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, and Good Friday (April 2) is a day of fast and abstinence. However, neither Ash Wednesday nor Good Friday are Holy Days of Obligation. I hope that you will use the season of Lent as the Church intends — as a time of repentance, personal renewal, and growth in holiness. I hope you will embrace the traditional practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in this season. I hope that you will use the days of Lent to discipline yourself, to correct your faults, to give up your sins, to grow in virtue, and to be reconciled to God. I don’t think it is necessary to undertake self-imposed artifi cial penances this year. I believe that the cheerful acceptance of all the hardships, deprivations, disappointments, losses, and sacrifi ces of the ongoing Coronavirus crisis is suffi cient penance. I would note that our safety practices and precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 remain in place and with no change in the foreseeable future. The obligation of attending Mass continues to be dispensed, masks must still be worn, hands must still be sanitized, and distance must still be kept. I do not foresee any changes in this for several more months at least. Remember, your cheerful acceptance of all of this is your penance!
I was recently informed that there is a new translation of the formula used to conclude the prayers of the Missal, and the new translation is to be implemented starting on Ash Wednesday. The familiar formula, “...through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever...” is modifi ed by the elimination of the word “one.” This is refl ecting a more precise translation of the original Latin text. Now, the Mass prayers will conclude: “...through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.” I mention this so you will not be surprised if you hear the celebrant at Mass use this formula, and think he made a mistake or changed the wording on his own. And, don’t be surprised if the priests forget and use the old formula. It will take some getting used to!
I hope you have a holy and blessed Lent!
Your Pastor,Msgr. Stephan Moloney

Today’s Gospel: Mark 1:40-45
In today’s Gospel, a man with leprosy came to Jesus. During the time of Jesus, people with leprosy had to stay away from everyone else, even their own families. The man said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out His hand, touched him and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” Jesus chose to heal the man.
Each day we have lots of decisions to make. What will I wear? What will I have for breakfast? What toy will I play with?
Most of our decisions are small. But you will have some that affect other people. Will I pay attention to my teacher? Will I talk to my friend today? Will I listen to my parents the fi rst time they ask me to do something? You know what you should do, but you have a choice.
Then there are other decisions like the one Jesus had to make today. Will you help someone in need? What would you do if another child needed a pencil? What would you do if you saw someone alone on the playground? What would you do if your little brother was upset?
Will you follow Jesus’ example to help and heal? Take some time this week to think about your decisions.
THOUGHTS FOR OUR PARISH CHILDRENby “Jackie,” Fr. Ferguson’s Cat
Hi boys and girls! My name is “Jackie,” and, as you know, I am Father Ferguson’s cat! Do you know what this Wednesday is? It is Ash Wednesday! That’s right! That means it is the beginning of the Season of Lent, which gets us ready for Easter Sunday in 40 days’ time. Lent is a time to think more about God and try extra hard to be good boys and girls and try not to sin or be bad. As Catholics, any time we do something special so that we try not to sin or be bad, we call that a “penance.” One “penance” that we can do during Lent, so that we can think more about God, is to try to eat less of our favorite foods.
You know, sometimes we like our favorite foods so much that we can’t think about anything else than getting our favorite food. But then, we forget about how special God is. And God is so much more special than even our favorite food. I know what that is like. Sometimes, while I am praying to God and enjoying God’s peace and love, I hear Father Ferguson opening up a can of tuna fi sh in the kitchen. And then, all I can think about is “tuna…tuna…tuna!” And then I run to the kitchen and I leave God behind. And then, after I fi nish eating the tuna that Father Ferguson gives me, I feel bad about leaving God behind. I let tuna get in the way of my friendship with God.
So, this Lent, I have promised to God that I will eat less tuna, and every time I hear a tuna fi sh can open up, I am going to say a special prayer to God telling Him how much I love Him. What is your
favorite food? Pizza? Ice cream? Spinach? (just kidding!) Maybe this Lent, whenever you feel like having your favorite food, you might pray to God instead and tell God how much you want to be his holy child always wanting His love. Have a “purr”-fect week!

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 14, 2021
A. The question of whether or not Catholics can celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation virtually (via social media, by phone, or in some other way) is a question that has actually been around for several years. The recent COVID-19 pandemic brought the question back in a new way, especially as many parishes were forced to introduce a sort of “social distanced” Confession, with the sacrament being celebrated outdoors. In refl ecting on this question, however, there are a couple of points that we want to keep in mind. First, as the Code of Canon Law observes in different places, the faithful have a right to the sacraments of the Church and the Church’s ministers have a responsibility to make them accessible. At the same time, however, we always have to be sure that we respect the nature of the sacraments themselves.
Although modern forms of technology and communication can help us in our work of evangelization catechesis, the Pontifi cal Council for Social Communication has reminded us that, “Virtual reality is no substitute for the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the sacramental reality of the other sacraments, and shared worship in a fl esh and blood human community. There are no sacraments on the Internet” (The Church and the Internet, no. 9).
Although our encounters with others on the Internet and via social media can be considered “real” in one sense, in the sacraments, we encounter Christ in a personal and ecclesial way. It is never just a private experience, but is always grounded in the life of the Church and this means that it must truly be personal, including the contact between the confessor and the penitent. While the convenience or ease of online celebrations might be appealing for many reasons, at heart, we always want to keep in mind the fullness of the Church’s tradition and the meaning of the sacraments.
WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED
Q: In today’s digital world, do we really need to be face-to-face with a priest to confess our sins? Would FaceTime or Zoom ever be allowed?

LIVE THE LITURGYINSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK
Everybody has a place at the table, and nobody deserves to feel inferior, unworthy, unwanted, or marginalized. It is not part of God’s vision. Jesus came to heal, make things whole, set things right, and restore relationships. No one is to feel unwelcome or alienated from the community. Whether we like it or not, this message is at the core of the Gospel. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Perhaps therefore, people kept coming from everywhere to listen to Jesus speak and to be in His presence. He made perfect sense. Most of us have no issue buying into this vision. We run into trouble, however, when we fall into the trap of privilege and power. We diverge from God’s vision when the powerful begin to control who is entitled to wholeness and inclusion, and greed becomes a driving force. Prejudice and entitlement have no place in the kingdom of God, and even the neediest and hurting among us are worthy of the compassion Jesus desires to offer. There are no easy solutions to the world’s dilemmas. But one thing is for certain, no one can be singled out, excluded or mistreated. Everyone matters.

REAL PRESENCEREAL FUTURE40
Merciful Father,
You are the source of all goodness and blessing. You have formed us into Your image and breathed Your Spirit in us to give us life. When we were lost through sin, You sought us out by sending us Your Son, Jesus Christ. It is
through the Gospel that we have hope in our redemption and fervor to share this message of salvation.
We, Your sons and daughters, come before You with hearts full of gratitude for the work of those who came before us, establishing parishes, schools, apostolates and ministries to serve the Gospel. Today we look to the signs of the times as we fix our gaze on the Real Presence of Your Son, Jesus Christ, in the Eucharist, asking for
wisdom and understanding as we seek to renew these places and apostolates as centers of formation and evangelization for the third millennium.
Guide us from our familiar surroundings to the exciting horizons of missionary discipleship. Through personal prayer and the grace of the sacraments, grant enthusiasm for the faith to all, confirm families in Your love,
raise up vocations to Holy Orders and religious life, and call back those who have strayed from You.
We ask this through Our Lady, Star of the New Evangelization, who is our intercessor and mother and St. Joseph our protector, through Christ Our Lord. Amen
