Prayer in Preparation for the 2020 Eucharistic Congress

God our Father, “Stay with us” and look with favor upon Your Church as we prepare with hope and joy to celebrate the Oakland Diocesan Eucharistic Congress. Help us to better welcome the gift of Your Son Jesus, who, staying with us in the memorial of His passion, death and resurrection, nourishes our lives as Your beloved children created in Your image and likeness. Send forth Your Holy Spirit that we may appreciate more fully the Real Presence of Your Son in the Most Blessed Sacrament, and become messengers of His life in a world that constantly abandons your love. In following the example of our Blessed Mother, may we always stay at your cross, continually offering ourselves, responding to Your love and fulfilling your call. We ask this through Our Lord, Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Introducción a la Hora Santa

Cada vez que nos presentamos ante Jesucristo presente en la hostia consagrada, ya sea durante la Exposición Eucarística o frente al Tabernáculo, reconocemos Su gran presencia y Su amor por nosotros. Una forma de pasar tiempo con nuestro Señor es durante una Hora Santa.

La inspiración para una Hora Santa proviene del Evangelio según Mateo. Durante la Agonía en el Jardín, Jesús, al encontrar a los discípulos dormidos después de pedirles que se quedaran y vigilaran, le pregunta a Pedro: "¿Entonces no podrías vigilarme durante una hora?" (Mateo 26:40). La hora santa nos da la oportunidad de permanecer en la presencia de Cristo durante una hora.

Durante una Hora Santa, la hostia consagrada generalmente es expuesta para la adoración usando un recipiente sagrado llamado Custodia. Mientras el Santísimo Sacramento se encuentra expuesto para la adoración, se pueden hacer diferentes prácticas de oración, tales como: lectura de la Sagrada Escritura, rezo del Santo Rosario, lecturas sobre escritos espirituales, o simplemente se puede permanecer en silencio para contemplar la grandeza de Dios en la Santa Eucaristía.

Si, es cierto que podemos orar en cualquier lugar, y en cualquier momento, acudir ante el Santísimo Sacramento en adoración, nos da un lugar libre de distracciones, donde podemos enfocarnos en Dios, permitiéndonos estar físicamente en su Santa Presencia Eucarística.

El ministro normal de Exposición y Bendición es un sacerdote o diácono. Introduction to the Holy Hour

Any time we come before Jesus Christ present in the consecrated host, either during Eucharistic Exposition or before a tabernacle, we recognize His great presence and love for us. One way to spend time with our Lord is during a Holy Hour.

The inspiration for a Holy Hour comes from the Gospel according to Matthew. During the Agony in the Garden, Jesus, upon finding the disciples asleep after asking them to remain and keep watch with him, asks Peter, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?” (Matthew 26:40) A Holy Hour gives us that opportunity to stay in the presence of Christ for one hour.

During a Holy Hour, the consecrated host is normally displayed in a vessel called a Monstrance. While the Blessed Sacrament is exposed, different practices of prayer may take place, such as reading sacred scripture, praying the rosary, reflecting on spiritual writings, or simply remaining in silence to contemplate the greatness of God in the Holy Eucharist.

While it is true that we can pray anywhere at any time, coming before the Blessed Sacrament in adoration gives us a place free from any distraction, where we can focus on God allowing us to physically be in in His Holy Eucharistic presence.

We encourage everyone to visit the Blessed Sacrament for adoration, just one hour, where Jesus, the Lord, wants to stay with us, especially while we prepare and pray for our 2020 Diocese of Oakland Eucharistic Congress.

In the following pages, you will find a simple order of Exposition and Benediction for use during a Holy Hour as we prepare and pray for our Oakland Diocesan Eucharistic Congress. The normal minister of Exposition and Benediction is a priest or deacon. However, in the absence of a priest or deacon, and with prior approval of the local pastor, an instituted Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion may expose or repose the Blessed Sacrament. In these cases, please refer to the separate guidelines given on page 15.
