Dear Friends:
Next Sunday - June 4th, 2017 - we celebrate the Birthday of the Church: HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHURCH! HAPPY PENTECOST CHURCH!
On Pentecost Sunday, we as Church celebrate our birthday: the birthday of the Church - Happy Birthday to one and to all! Some Christian
celebrations (e.g., Christmas, Easter ...) have been hijacked and re-created in our own image. And rather than place God at their center,
we have placed either ourselves or secular interests. Christmas is now about gift giving and office parties. Easter finds its heroes amongst
the rabbits and its symbols in baby chickens and eggs. It is almost as if the Church no longer controls the meaning of these two
celebrations - the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But as for Pentecost, the world (the secular world) wouldn’t know what to do with
it, it couldn’t be co-opted for any other purpose. Let us set Pentecost free to press us to do God’s will so that it is not overtaken by secular
interests. Many institutions believe that the poor should be empowered. Many institutions believe that families should be helped. Many
institutions believe that the oppressed should be set free. But only one institution believes that such activity is motivated, inspired and
propelled by the divine intervention of the activity of a Spirit promised and poured out by one raised from the dead. That institution is the
Church. And we are reminded of this fact on Pentecost Sunday. On this day, many churches acknowledge the multi-cultural dimension of
Pentecost by having the scriptures read in diverse languages - a re-enactment of the first Christian Pentecost where persons from a
variety of cultures heard the Word in their own language. This points to a challenge directed at all of us: that we are to take our place on
the world stage of Christendom as partners in the global Church, recognizing the struggles of Christian peoples in a variety of cultural
settings. The Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity inspires us to form relationships of community. The significance of Pentecost is
that people who spoke different languages were given by the Holy Spirit a common understanding, each in his or her own language, of
the message that was spoken to them. The greatest challenge that our Christian era has is to create out of the many peoples of the world
one humankind. In accomplishing that goal, the emphasis of Christian faith should be on the Holy Spirit who inspires people of diverse languages, diverse
cultures, diverse belief systems, diverse loyalties, to listen to each other, to learn each other’s languages, to discover what they have in
common, and to join in overcoming the forces that divide them. This is the power of Pentecost we celebrate and pray for on this day.
Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister has made the following remarks about prayer: “The person immersed in the spiritual life finds out all too soon that prayer is not a massage. Prayer is an opening of the self so that the Word of God can break in and make us new. We do not pray in order to change God. God is not a magic act we use to save us from human condition. No, we pray so that God can change us. God is the One, the All, the Best in whose image we have all been made and to whom we must aspire, all lesser images to the contrary.” Let
us embrace the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives and go off to make the world a better place using our many different gifts and
talents. Pentecost provides us an opportunity to pause and reflect on The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are unmerited spiritual favors or
benefits bestowed by the Spirit. They are seven in number according to the Catholic tradition that is based on Isaiah 11:1-3; the Greek
translation of the Hebrew Bible adds the gift of piety. Wisdom is the gift that comes about over time. A wise person has learned to look at
life from all perspectives, to see and understand the “whole picture” of a situation. Someone who is wise can see how everything is part
of God’s love. It ties all the rest together. It helps us recognize the Holy Spirit with all His gifts in our lives. It helps us know enough to
respond to Him and live faithfully. Understanding is the ability to see from another person’s “heart”, to feel the feelings of others and to
put these before our own. It is the ability to appreciate that each human person is made in God’s image and likeness. Counsel opens us
to other persons’ insights about a problem and makes us skilled at working with the people to solve that problem. It helps in resolving
uncertainties. Fortitude or courage is the ability to follow our convictions and conscience no matter what the cost. We are given the
strength to do what is right in spite of obstacles and difficulties. Knowledge is the ability to find important information and facts and look
at them objectively and intelligently thus helping in making wise decisions. It gives us knowledge of God as a lovable Being, and gives us
a proper appreciation of all created things in God. Piety or reverence is the gift of honoring God and God’s people enabling us to worship
and pray to God properly. It helps to bring out of our souls a total dedication to God’s glory and the good of others. Fear of the Lord or
wonder and awe is the ability to be amazed by things in life, to be awake to the realization that we are always in God’s presence. This gift
tells us that God created the beauty of the universe but also listens to us, cares for us, and loves us beyond all measure: our response to
all these is respect - a respect that draws us away from anything which might offend God. On Pentecost Sunday, it is a fitting time to ask
the Holy Spirit for a deeper share in His seven gifts; He will not fail to respond.
Something to think about:
“There are two days in a week about which it is futile to worry. One is yesterday, the other is tomorrow. That leaves us with the present
(today), which is indeed a wonderful present from God!!”
May God bless your Easter Season with good things! Fr. Masabakhwa, R.
