Prayer of the Week:

Home Communion: There are many in the community who are still quite isolated at home

and who do not feel that they can return to the church for some time yet. Many of you have had the practice of taking communion to friends and neighbours who are house bound – a wonderful ministry. In the interest of safeguarding the older and vulnerable in the community Bishop Robert has advised that in this COVID time this practice cannot continue in the usual way. Older parishioners are not able to take communion to those who are house bound. I know this has been the source of some distress

for many of you as these uncertain times continue. We will try to organise for others to undertake this ministry and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of themselves and those they visit. Please contact the Parish Office if you know of anyone who would like communion brought to them.

Planned Giving Program: If you would like to support our Parish financially, this may be done by Direct Debit, or via our weekly envelope system.

For further information, please contact the Parish Office. All contributions are gratefully accepted.

Heavenly Father, when your only begotten Son Jesus Christ rose from the dead,

he commissioned his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations” and you remind us that through our Baptism

we are made sharers in the mission of the Church.

Empower us by the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be courageous and zealous in bearing witness to the Gospel,

so that the mission entrusted to the Church, which is still very far from completion,

may find new and efficacious expressions that bring life and light to the world.

Help us make it possible for all peoples to experience the saving love and mercy of Jesus Christ,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever.

Amen.

A FEW WORDS FROM FR. JAMIE As I look back over the past month here at St. Anthony’s I am so grateful for many things. Firstly, getting to know so many wonderful and welcoming people, whom I hope to come to know even better as the months go by. I have been fortunate to have participated in liturgical events that have marked some important milestones in the life of our young people and their families: Baptisms, Confirmation and First Communion celebrations. I have also had the opportunity of being with good friends and family for some weddings and funerals in other parishes. So, for me the month has been a busy re-introduction to life in Toowoomba. At Mass here during the month we have celebrated the Season of Creation (and Laudato Si’), Father’s Day, Child Protection Sunday, Migrant and Refugee Sunday and have been fortunate to hear from speakers in each of these areas. While all this has been happening I have seen to some personal appointments and completed the cardiac rehabilitation program at St. Andrew’s. This area of life is progressing well and I thank you all for your prayerful support. I am also grateful to the many kind parishioners who have made my transition into parish life at St. Anthony’s such a pleasant experience. A big thank you to all who have been so generous in the donation of items for the house. I have spent my first few days in the home and have been overwhelmed with what people have given in order to make this new house into a place I can call home while I am your parish priest. I look forward to returning the many favours shown me over the past month in the years that lie ahead. Thanks again, Fr. Jamie Follow-up to Season of Creation: Last Sunday, I mentioned a number of resources to delve more deeply into some of the issues raised in Laudato Si' and consequentially Season of Creation. Please see them listed below. Global Catholic Climate Movement - https://catholicclimatemovement.global/# Caritas Australia - https://www.caritas.org.au/learn/for-parishes Catholic Earthcare - https://catholicearthcare.org.au/ Catholic Earthcare Convocation resources - https://catholicearthcare.org.au/2020-convocation/ Overturn the Tables - https://www.overturnthetables.net/

In the coming weeks, Caritas Australia and Catholic Earthcare will release a new resource designed for individuals and groups to look at actions through seven questions specifically around Laudato Si'. I will advise the link when it becomes available.

As I said on Sunday, Surely the premise of Laudato Si’, Care of Our Common Home should be fundamental to our faith. I have so much to learn and do and I invite you to do the same.

*** Social Justice News ***

Social Justice Thought for the Week:

We are all worried about the social consequences of the pandemic. All of us. Many people want to return to normality and resume economic activities. Certainly, but this “normality” should not include social injustices and the degradation of the environment. The pandemic is a crisis, and we do not emerge from a crisis the same as before: either we come out of it better, or we come out of it worse. We must come out of it better, to counter social injustice and environmental damage….The preferential option for the poor, this ethical-social need that comes from God’s love, inspires us to conceive of and design an economy where people, and especially the poorest, are at the centre.

And it also encourages us to plan the treatment of viruses by prioritising those who are most in need. It would be sad if, for the vaccine for Covid-19, priority were to be given to the richest! It would be sad if this vaccine were to become the property of this nation or another, rather than universal and for all. And what a scandal it would be if all the economic assistance we are observing - most of it with public money - were to focus

on rescuing those industries that do not contribute to the inclusion of the excluded, the promotion of the least, the common good or the care of creation. There are four criteria for choosing which industries should be helped: those which contribute to the inclusion of the excluded, to the promotion of the last, to the common good and the care of creation. (POPE FRANCIS, Wednesday, 19 August 2020)

Next meeting Social Justice - Wednesday, November 4th at 5pm in the Community Centre.

Covid Plan for St Anthony’s Parish: The St Anthony’s Covid plan - put together in consultation with the Parish Pastoral Council - has been approved by Bishop Robert. A copy is on the Church Notice Board. All the requirements for gathering in the church have been put in place.

We have a duty of care to positively support the health of the wider faith community, so there continues to be issues around restricting numbers in the church, social distancing and appropriate cleaning of the church each time it is used.

The Australian bishops have reminded us that all Catholics are released from their Sunday obligation in these times.

Weekday mass continues to be held on Wednesday and Fridays at 9.15am. The Friday mass will continue to be live streamed. There is no need to book for these masses.

As part of our COVIDSafe Plan we will still need to keep a record of attendees for contact tracing (to be kept for 56 days). To streamline entry to mass we issue Mass Cards with a number printed on it. The Parish office will keep a record of the card number so upon arrival you need only write down your card number. No unwell person can attend and those who are older and/or vulnerable are asked to consider their attendance.

Sunday mass is at 8.30am – NO Vigil at this time. Vigil will be returning soon, watch this space!!!

We ask that you email or phone the office on 4636 1737 to make a booking. We recommend those able to attend weekday mass continue to do so and keep Sunday mass for workers and families.

If you book a seat and can’t come please try to let us know before 4pm Friday.

At this time no date has been set for a return to the 6pm Vigil mass.

COVID19 Plan – Ways you can help when attending Mass. Make a booking to attend mass. (Sunday only) Stay home if you or a member of your family is unwell. Avoid gathering in groups inside the church before and after mass. Avoid close contact with anyone who has cold or flu-like symptoms Enter via the Entry door only. Exit via the Exit door only. Maintain 1-5m social distancing at all times. Follow all instructions by the Welcomers and Ushers. Apply hand sanitiser on arrival. Ensure you get and use a Mass Card with personal details for

streamlined entry to weekday masses. If unable to walk to communion, use front row seats. Sit only in your allocated seat/s. Avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily. Practice good hygiene – eg sneeze, cough into elbow or tissue (not hands) Say “Peace be with you” and offer a smile, wave, nod or bow for the Sign of Peace. Following instructions on receiving communion. To maintain Social Distancing ALL people, unless seated in front rows, MUST come forward for communion or a

blessing. Advise the Parish Office immediately if you suspect you have or have been diagnosed with COVID19 in the days

after attending a mass. Consider downloading the COVIDSafe App.

****When attending Mass please Be Aware****

You will need to arrive at least 10 minutes early to assist with checking-in procedures. Once seated, please do not move around the church.

Please observe social distancing at all times. Do not come if you are not feeling well.

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading – Isaiah 25:6-10

The Lord will prepare a banquet for every nation On this mountain, the God of hosts will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of well-aged wines, of food rich and juicy, of well-aged wines strained clear. And the God of hosts will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; will swallow up death forever. Then God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of the people will be taken away from all the earth, for God has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for God, so that we might be saved. This is our God for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in our salvation. For the hand of God will rest on this mountain. The Word of God.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 22 R – I shall live in the house of God all the days of my life.

You are my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where You give me repose. Near restful waters you lead me to revive my drooping spirit. R You guide me along the right path; You are true to your name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. R You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil; my cup is overflowing. R Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In God’s own house shall I dwell forever and ever. R

Second reading – Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20

With the help of the One who gives me strength, there is nothing I cannot master

I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through the One who strengthens me. In any case, it was kind of you to share my distress. And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours in Christ Jesus as lavishly as only God can. To our God be glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Word of God. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our heart that we might see how great is the hope to which we are called. Alleluia!

Gospel – Matthew 22:1-10

Invite everyone you can to the wedding Once more Jesus spoke to the chief priests and Pharisees in parables: “The reign of heaven may be compared to a ruler who gave a wedding banquet for his son. The ruler sent slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.’ But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized the slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. The ruler was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’ Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. The Universal Prayer Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time – 11th

October

Celebrant: Sisters and brothers, the love of God for all humanity is revealed through the parable of the weddings feast. Our love for all people is now revealed in this Universal Prayer. That the new Encyclical Letter of Pope Francis, addressed to all people, will help the Church and the world to work through this pandemic creating harmony, respect and peace everywhere. Lord, hear us. That each one of us will help to reshape the Church in the spirit of Jesus so that no one feels excluded or rejected, but rather be welcomed as sisters and brothers, equal in dignity through the grace of baptism. Lord, hear us. That across the world people will cooperate with health and government officials, so that through sacrifices of freedom, care for the safety of others, and a spirit of goodwill, we can slow down and eventually eliminate the coronavirus. Lord, hear us. That the growing violence between Armenia and Azerbaijan will ease quickly, the war in Syria come to an end, the negotiations for peace in Afghanistan and Yemen bear fruit, and work to resolve the Israel/Palestine tension continue with determination. Lord, hear us. That as we prepare for the 10th anniversary of the Canonisation of St Mary of the Cross next Saturday we will ‘take on fresh courage with confidence’ reflecting on her feelings of intense happiness, nearness to God and a beautiful calm, as she heard the terrifying words of excommunication from the Church in 1871 at the age of 29. Lord, hear us. That on this International Day of the Girl Child we pray for the protection of all girls: the victims of war and violence, those in refugee camps, those living in poverty and without education, those forced into marriage or child labour, the victims of cyber bullying, those sick, disabled, and struggling to maintain good mental health. Lord, hear us. May Christ bring to everlasting life those who have died, especially from the Corona virus and bring consolation to their families. We remember all those we know who have died recently: … Our loved ones whose anniversaries are at this time……….The deceased priests of the Diocese ……. All those who are sick. Lord, hear us. Celebrant: Eternal Shepherd, in this pandemic revive our drooping spirit, guide all peoples along the right path, comfort those in distress, and let your goodness and kindness follow the people of this world, for ever and ever.

A Reflection By Pope Francis

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to us about the response given to the invitation from God — who is represented by a king — to participate in a wedding banquet. The invitation has three characteristics: freely offered, breadth and universality. Many people were invited, but something surprising happened: none of the intended guests came to take part in the feast, saying they had other things to do; indeed, some were even indifferent, impertinent, even annoyed. God is good to us, he freely offers us his friendship, he freely offers us his joy, his salvation; but so often we do not accept his gifts, we place our practical concerns, our interests first. And when the Lord is calling to us, it so often seems to annoy us.

Some of the intended guests went so far as to abuse and kill the servants who delivered the

invitation. But despite the lack of response from those called, God’s plan is never interrupted. In facing the rejection of the first invitees, He is not discouraged, He does not cancel the feast, but makes another invitation, expanding it beyond all reasonable limits, and sends his servants into the town squares and the byways to gather anyone they find. These, however, are ordinary, poor, neglected and marginalized people, good and bad alike — even bad people are invited — without distinction. And the hall is filled with “the excluded”. The Gospel, rejected by some, is unexpectedly welcomed in many other hearts.

The goodness of God has no bounds and does not discriminate against anyone. For this reason the banquet of the Lord’s gifts is universal, for everyone. Everyone is given the opportunity to respond to the invitation, to his call; no one has the right to feel privileged or to claim an exclusive right. All of this induces us to break the habit of conveniently placing ourselves at the centre, as did the High Priests and the Pharisees. One must not do this; we must open ourselves to the peripheries, also acknowledging that, at the margins too, even one who is cast aside and scorned by society is the object of God’s generosity. We are all called not to reduce the Kingdom of God to the confines of the “little church” — our “tiny little church” — but to enlarge the Church to the dimensions of the Kingdom of God. However, there is one condition: wedding attire must be worn, that is, charity toward God and neighbour must be shown.

Let us entrust the tragedies and the hopes of so many of our excluded, weak, outcast, scorned brothers and sisters, as well as of those who are persecuted for reasons of faith, to the intercession of Most Holy Mary, and let us also invoke her protection upon the work of the Synod of Bishops, meeting in the Vatican during these days.

Anti-Poverty Week supports the Australian community to have an increased understanding of poverty and to take action collectively to end it. We are a diverse network of individuals and organisations who share this purpose. Since 2002, we have been active each year in the week around the 17th of October, the United Nations Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Our key message is: Poverty exists. Poverty hurts us all. We can all do something about it. It is one of hope, not despair. In 2020, Anti-Poverty Week will be held from the 11th to the 17th of October. For more information please go to https://antipovertyweek.org.au/
