DIOCESAN EVENTS

RESPECT LIFE CORNER On a Mission for Others: At the beginning of Lent we can think about the temptations faced by Jesus in the desert. Satan challenged Jesus three times and each time Jesus put his mission for others front and center, saying “Get away Satan.” In the desert Jesus discovered his hunger, his dependence, his humanity. And he chose to stand by his chosen people; he knew he was born to sit with us, eat with us, to walk and suffer with us. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: This Lent look for ways to help and give of yourselves that you may have missed in the past. Reach out to local food shelters or soup kitchens and see what you can do to serve your brothers and sisters; or participate with the CRS Rice Bowl and include your family or coworkers.

St. Vincent de Paul Dinner Theater March 23 The St. Vincent de Paul Dinner Theater will be held Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the

Father Pat York recalls he considered the priesthood during his eighth grade

year. He credits his parents as having the biggest influence on his priestly

vocation. They encouraged their children to be open to God’s call as a

priest or religious in the Church. The seed of his vocation took root in his

family and grew from there. He would ask his parishioners, Pray for the

priests of our diocese. Support your parish priests. Pray fervently to the

Lord for more religious vocation, Fr. Pat also encourages parents to set an

example for their children in practicing their faith, do not treat it as a burden

or obligation, but as a gift that is enriching. (The Tower Topics, by Fr. Paul

Sheller, O.S.B.)

Will you help promote Vocations? The Serra Club of St. Clair County is seeking Catholic men and women to help encourage Vocations to the Priesthood and Consecrated Religious Life. The Fifth Luminous Mystery

THE INSTITUTION OF THE EUCHARIST

1. I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

2. Jesus took bread, blessed it: "Take and eat, this is My Body."

3. Taking the wine: "This cup is the new covenant in my Blood, shed

for you."

4. At that Eucharistic meal, Jesus celebrated the first Mass.

5. At every Mass the sacrifice of Calvary is made present.

6. At the Last Supper Jesus instituted the sacrament of Holy Orders to

perpetuate this sacrifice.

7. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in

him."

8. The Eucharist is a sacrifice inasmuch as it is offered up, and a

sacrament inasmuch as it is received.

9. In the Mass we offer ourselves to God through Jesus, and God gives

himself to us.

10. The Mass will be fruitful in the measure of our surrender to the

Father.

Spiritual Fruit: Pray for our country, that our prayers will help

resolve the conflicts among our leaders. May God lead all of them to

serve to better the lives of those who reside in our country…from

conception to natural death.

WINTER FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES “Paul: An Apostle of Christ”

Friday, March 15, 7:00 p.m.

Immediately Following Stations of the Cross

Adult Faith Formation House

Father Sebastian will facilitate a discussion following the movie.

Deepen your Lenten journey this year by attending the Stations of the Cross at 6:30 p.m.

and then walking over to the Adult Faith Formation House to view this inspiring film,

starring Jim Caviezel, about the trials and tribulations faced by the early church. As the

Apostle Paul awaits execution, the Church of Rome sends for Luke to help him and get

his guidance on whether they should persevere in the face of Roman persecution or flee

the city. This film has a powerful message about overcoming hate with love and

sacrificing for one's beliefs. Fr. Sebastian will lead a discussion following the movie. No

need to RSVP.

A Journey toward Holiness this Lenten Season

Thursday evenings, March 14 – April 11 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Adult Faith Formation House

Pope Francis: Rejoice and be Glad!

No matter where life finds you today, holiness is within reach! Join us this Lent as we read and discuss Pope Francis’ latest work, Rejoice and Be Glad, in which the Pope guides us, with wit and insight, to live our call to holiness in today’s world. From how to avoid false forms of holiness, to finding inspiration in the lives of the saints, Pope Francis explores the heights and depths of practical Christian holiness. He invites all Christians to discern and generously respond to one’s personal mission. Make this Lent a time of prayer, spiritual reading, and discussion among fellow Catholics, as we journey with Pope Francis toward the joy of holiness. Contact Karen Seaborn at [email protected] or 939-6426, ext. 22, to sign up for this Lenten series.

From the Catechism…Matrimony Let’s look at a few paragraphs from the Catechism of the Catholic Church regarding Marriage in the Lord: 1612 The nuptial covenant between God and his people Israel had prepared the way for the new and everlasting covenant in which the Son of God, by becoming incarnate and giving his life, has united to himself in a certain way all mankind saved by him, thus preparing for "the wedding-feast of the Lamb." 1613 On the threshold of his public life Jesus performs his first sign - at his mother's request - during a wedding feast. The Church attaches great importance to Jesus' presence at the wedding at Cana. She sees in it the confirmation of the goodness of marriage and the proclamation that thenceforth marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ's presence. 1614 In his preaching Jesus unequivocally taught the original meaning of the union of man and woman as the Creator willed it from the beginning: permission given by Moses to divorce one's wife was a concession to the hardness of hearts. The matrimonial union of man and woman is indissoluble: God himself has determined it "what therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder." 1615 This unequivocal insistence on the indissolubility of the marriage bond may have left some perplexed and could seem to be a demand impossible to realize. However, Jesus has not placed on spouses a burden impossible to bear, or too heavy - heavier than the Law of Moses. By coming to restore the original order of creation disturbed by sin, he himself gives the strength and grace to live marriage in the new dimension of the Reign of God. It is by following Christ, renouncing themselves, and taking up their crosses that spouses will be able to "receive" the original meaning of marriage and live it with the help of Christ. This grace of Christian marriage is a fruit of Christ's cross, the source of all Christian life. 1616 This is what the Apostle Paul makes clear when he says: "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her," adding at once: "'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one. This is a great mystery, and I mean in reference to Christ and the Church." 1617 The entire Christian life bears the mark of the spousal love of Christ and the Church. Already Baptism, the entry into the People of God, is a nuptial mystery; it is so to speak the nuptial bath. which precedes the wedding feast, the Eucharist. Christian marriage in its turn becomes an efficacious sign, the sacrament of the covenant of Christ and the Church. Since it signifies and communicates grace, marriage between baptized persons is a true sacrament of the New Covenant. So, we see that marriage is a permanent union of love, a sign of Jesus’ eternal love for his people, his Church.

- Fr. Von Deeke
