St Augusnes J & I School Together we can reach for the Stars English In English, the main texts for this term are The Man Who Walked Between The Towersby Mordicai Gerstein and the short film “5 metres 80” by Nicolas Deveaux. The children will work on many different writing genres including newspaper reports, sports commentaries and non-chronological reports. They will also look at personification and imagery through the poem, Sunsetby Mary Fumento. Science During Spring 1, children will be studying Living things and their habitats.In this topic, children will learn about: Carl Linneaus, the father of classification. Micro-organisms. The 7 levels of classification. Classification of plants and animals. During Spring 2, children will be studying Light.In this topic, children will learn about: How light enables us to see. How shadows are formed. What refraction is and how it changes the direction light travels in. Children will also be creating periscopes to show how light is reflected. Maths This term, children will cover: Fractions Decimals Percentages Algebra Ratio Converting Units Throughout each of these areas, children will tackle a variety of fluency, reason- ing and problem solving activities. As well as this, children will complete a weekly mental or written arithmetic test and a weekly times table test. It is important that children practise these regu- larly at home each week. Humanies Children will be learning about and using map skills. They will concentrate on: Grid references. Compass points. Longitude and latitude. Ordnance survey maps. R.E During Spring 1, children will be covering the unit, How do Jews Remember Kings and Prophets?During Spring 2, children will be covering the unit, What do Christians believe about JesusDeath and Resurrection?Music Children will be using songs to help learn the words for food items in Spanish. P.E P.E. lessons will take place on a Tuesday and focus on Boccia and hockey, including the skills needed to be able to work and play as a team. Spelling, Grammar and Punctuaon In SPaG this term, we will be focusing on: Prepositions Modal verbs Subordinating and coordinating conjunctions Commands, statements and questions Relative pronouns We will also be working on the Y3/4 spelling list and the Y5/6 spelling list. Children will be tested on these words and the ones they do not know how to spell will be sent home for them to learn. Compung Children will begin the term by developing their knowledge of E-safety. They will then use the internet to research and use this information in many cross-curricular lessons. They will also create a newspaper report and a poem as part of their English work. PSHE During Spring 1, children will be learning about health and safety and how to lead a healthy life. During Spring 2, children will be learning about British Values and what each of them mean. D&T/Art/Cooking Children will be creating various pieces of winter art using a range of mediums. Children will be cooking Tomato and Basil Bread.Spanish Children will be learning the words for food items and how to order from a menu. This will be linked to their cooking.

Monday 6th January — Teacher training day—school closed to children. Tuesday 7th January—School opens. Thursday 16th January—Prevent workshop for all the class. Wednesday 22nd January —Family Learning.

February

Wednesday 5th February— Council elections in class. Tuesday 11th February—Council elections results announced. Thursday 13th February—Parents Evening. Friday 14th February—Behaviour reward and school closes for half-term. Monday 24th February—Teacher training day—school closed to children.

March

Monday 2nd—Friday 6th March —World Book Week. Tuesday 3rd March—Keeping Safe workshop. Friday 6th March—World book day—dress as your favourite character.

April

Friday 3rd April—Non-uniform day. Friday 3rd April—Reward afternoon and school closed for Easter. Monday 20th April—School opens.

Parts Parents Can Play

Listen to your child read at least 3 times a week and help them to remember to bring their reading book to school everyday.

Support your child with their homework. Remember to ring school if your child is absent. Check that your child has a pump bag, with the correct P.E kit in school on a

Tuesday. Put names in uniforms, P.E kits and coats to avoid items being lost. Try and attend parent coffee mornings and celebration assemblies.

Homework

Children have homework every day: they should read their reading book and complete 15 minutes of activities on Reading Plus. Every Friday, children are sent home with spellings to learn for the test which is on the following Friday. At the end of each half-term/term, children will be sent home with a homework folder with clear instructions on what work they need to complete during the holidays.
