Baptisms

We welcome those who were baptized recently: Violet Suzanne Klapper, Sara Emily Vande Hei and Anthony Daniel Vande Hei

This week is the start of Lent. Wednesday, February 14th is Ash Wednesday and St. Valentine’s Day on the older Church calendar. Ash Wednesday trumps St. Valentine’s Day. So be sure to abide by the rules of Abstaining from meat and Fasting. Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are two of the obligatory fast-

ing days of the year which means they are marked by no snack-ing, and only one regular meal with two smaller meals. Seniors are exempt as are children. Though not a Holy Day of Obliga-tion it remains a powerful way to begin the season of Lent. For one, allowing ourselves to be marked with ashes admits to others that we are in need of repair and that we’re honestly sorry for our faults and sins. Secondly, it reminds us that we are mortal and that this life is not forever and that, yes, there is a God, and he is a God who will one day examine our hearts for the marks of real love. The love that is ready for eternal life. Ashes are humbling for all of us. They are a public sign of incompleteness. They are also a foreshadowing that in the end, we all enter the throne room of God on the same terms. The words from the Funeral Mass offered for our faithful departed often come to my mind on Ash Wednesday, “earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust”. The ashes serve not only to remind us of the brevity of this life but also of the gift and promise of eternal Life to come. Let the ashes speak and direct your heart to God. Lovers exchange hearts this day. Let’s make a Valentine for God too. Let’s give God our heart again. We will have a Parish Mass here at 8:45am, a 10:15am School Mass, a 12pm prayer service, and then another evening Parish Mass at 5:30pm. The blessing of Lent is that it is 40 days. The burden of Lent is that it is 40 days. Lent gives us time. By the time it’s over, it should feel like Spring both around us and within us. As the air warms, please God may our hearts warm also. 40 days was chosen by the Church to parallel the biblical symbolism of the number 40 used throughout the scriptures. We recall the 40 days of the flood of Noah that cleansed the earth. We recall the 40 years of the desert wandering of Israel dropping their idols in the sands of the Sinai Peninsula. Their wandering reminds us of our own long wandering and struggle to let go of unhealthy attach-ments and false allurements. It recalls the 40 days of Jesus in the desert that he too took to unite himself tightly with the Father’s plan of salvation. We recognize too that it takes time to become more deeply united with God. How will you let God enter your 40 days of Lent? We have the Lenten “Word Among Us” periodical to help you out with some daily prayer. Take one. In the bible every 40 ended with some good. Ours will also if we allow God in. The flood brought the dove of peace, the desert brought the Promised Land, and Christ emerged from the desert after 40 days stronger and ready to be anointed by the Holy Spirit in the River Jordan. Ready for mission. God wants to bless our Lent too. We can welcome him with renewed prayer, intentional fasting and some conscientious almsgiving or gifting. Let us pray for the each other and the parish this Lent! Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Brothers and sisters, whether you eat or drink, or what-ever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” 1-CORINTHIANS 10:31 Do a quick check of your priorities. Where does God rank in this list? If He’s not first, you have some work to do. Putting God first in everything helps us from putting other “gods” (like our pride and ego, money and posses-sions to name a few) before God. Before making a deci-sion, ask yourself if I’m doing this for the glory of God or for the glory of me?
