St Charles Carnival Week #85

St Charles Parish was founded during the boom years of the 1920’s. But in 1929, with the coming of the Great Depression, the prosperous times disappeared. The parish was heavily in debt from the purchase of the original property and the construction of the original frame church, the rectory, and the 1927 school building. The first St Charles Summer Carnival was held in 1932—not only to help meet the mortgage--but also to provide some neighborhood enjoyment during those dark economic times. From 1932 until the mid-1950’s, the Carnival was held on the lot where our church stands today, at the corner of Ridge and Wilber. I have seen photographs of those days. There were “home-made item” booths: cakes, afghans, crafts, etc. and a roast beef dinner “made from scratch.” (I have heard stories about the army of volunteers required to peel beets, mash potatoes, etc.) During the Second World War, from 1942 till 1944, the Carnivals were “suspended” since it was impossible to purchase the needed prizes as the war effort required all the raw materials. (So it’s really our eighty-second Carnival after eight-five years.) Times were good in the 1950’s. I have heard about the parakeet booth, the lamp booth, the blanket booth, and also a booth with slabs of bacon hanging from hooks. Someone also used to donate home-made cement bird baths decorated with tiles (I know of at least two still being enjoyed by the birds!) One year, Father Walter Tulley, associate pastor at the time, won the Carnival Grand Prize car! In 1969, one of the Carnival evenings was the same night that our astronauts landed on the moon. Everybody stayed home, glued to their television sets! Carnival Chairmen, over the last eighty years, were Tom Burke, Paul Phillips, Joe Jira, and Kevin Leigh. Since I became pastor in 1987, we have earmarked each year’s Carnival proceeds to improve our parish plant: we have enhanced our safety, comfort, and convenience to the tune of about three million dollars. This year’s Carnival will replace the floor covering in the Lower Hall, purchase i-pads or Chromebooks for religious use for our Day School and PCRF students, and repair the Charles Avenue parking lot. The Opening Parade will be this Wednesday, stepping off from Parma Circle at 6:00pm. We will offer a Casino in the Upper Hall on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Kitchen will open on Saturday and Sunday at 5:00pm. (Come to 4:00pm Mass next Saturday and then stay for dinner!) Mike Cercek is introducing a homemade cavatelli and meatball stand. On Friday and Saturday evenings there will be a balloon artist in the Kids’ Corner from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Next Sunday, we will welcome a Kids’ Korner magician for two shows at 6:30 and again at 8:00pm. There will be a Polka Mass next Sunday at 5:30pm. Our Seventh Sellers’ Appreciation Drawing for $500 will be held this Sunday with an Eighth $500 Drawing next Sunday

See You at the Carnival!

HOMECOMING CARNIVAL PARADE

At 6:00pm on Wednesday, July 13, our annual Homecoming Carnival will be kicked off again with a festive parade. Children will again have the opportunity to enter their bikes in the bike-decorating contest. There will be prizes for the most patriotic, most Parmaesque and best safety forces themed bicycles. If you have a connection to a local business that might be interested in donating a prize or two (or more) to the contest, please drop it off in the Parish Office care of “Carnival Parade.” Finally, we are still looking for groups to march in the parade. Please contact Sean Brennan at 440-382-2289 or by e-mail at [email protected] to participate or with questions.

WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016 UPDATE

Krakớw, Poland, HERE WE COME!

Our World Youth Day pilgrimage is less than a month away. The date of our departure for Krakow, Poland, July 21, 2016, is rapidly approaching. World Youth Day is an international gathering of youth and young adults established by Pope John Paul

II in 1985, as a way of bringing young Catholics together from around the world to celebrate their faith and to challenge them to embrace more fully the gospel of Jesus Christ. During this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has chosen the theme for World Youth Day, “Blessed are the Merciful, for they will receive mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)

We would like to take your prayers with us as we journey throughout our travels in Poland as well as, Assisi and Rome, Italy. We invite you to write down any intentions you may have on the prayer cards set out by the Holy Family Shrine in the Church and then place in the basket on the side altar. We will be carrying your petitions with us throughout our pilgrimage. Your petitions will not only be remembered in prayer by our pilgrims, but also at the closing Mass in Krakow with Pope Francis. Please continue to pray for all of us pilgrims, especially for our safety. This pilgrimage would not be possible without your support of our fundraising efforts these past three years. On behalf of all of us pilgrims, we thank you! ~ Fr. Ryan, Fr. Terry & Sr. Denise Marie
